If you want to jailbreak any current iPhone or iPod Touch devices running on iPhone OS 3.0, you must use redsn0w. This post will show a step-by-step tutorial on how to jailbreak your device with redsn0w.
You can download redsn0w for Windows, Mac, or Linux here.
redsn0w 0.8 will only work with iPhone 3.0, iPhone 3G 3.0, iPhone 3GS 3.0, iPod Touch 3.0, and iPod Touch 2G 3.0.
1. Download the iPhone OS 3.0 IPSW file for your device and save it to your desktop. Here are the file names for each device, make sure you have the right one:

10. Once your device has rebooted redsn0w will start uploading the RAMDisk and kernel.
11. After everything has been successfully uploaded to your device, redsn0w will have; the "Done!" message. Your device will now reboot and you should see the Cydia app on your SpringBoard.

- If you don't do this properly you will get a DFU Mode Failed message and you'll have to go back to step one.
9. Once your device has successfully entered DFU Mode, redsn0w will show the following message: "Please wait while your device is being jailbroken. Waiting for reboot." Your device should reboot after this.
10. Once your device has rebooted redsn0w will start uploading the RAMDisk and kernel.
11. After everything has been successfully uploaded to your device, redsn0w will have; the "Done!" message. Your device will now reboot and you should see the Cydia app on your SpringBoard.

It was hanging on "Waiting for reboot." I unplugged the USB cable from the iPhone and plugged it back in. Then it worked fine.
When i download the IPSW file, it is opens in a folder, and and stuff inside, but there does not seem to be the ipsw file anywhere. im on leopard. is anybody else having this problem.. and can anybody else help me?!

Does it matter if all my apps are still on it at the start. I know I'll loose apps and data that's fine with me but will having data on there at the start of my jailbreak mess with anything?

I have downloaded redsnow for update with 3g 3.0.1. when I open redsnow to Browse to find firmware, when I hit, Iphone folder it goes to another folder that says firmware and when I hit that opens something with choice of all flash or dfu. it doesn;t ever let me just choose something for redsnow to browse what am i doing wrong. I am using a Mac laptop
I have the same problem with windows 7, it'll get about 4 bars into uploading the ramdisk and fail.

I had the same problem with vista. All I did was right click on the redsn0w.exe and run as administrator... After that runs like a charm. I had to restart the entire process, but now it works just fine... Hope it helps

i have done it. All goes fine until reboot. Now my iphone 3g only show the apple logo. Its been like that since last nite after i upgrade to v3.0.1 & jailbreak using redsnow0.8.

Although I've done all steps on Mac 10.5.7 and I was shown the final "Done" message, my 3G stuck before rebooting. I waited for about 10 minutes, but it still showed "hdd" picture. Now, I've restored back to 2.2.1 and haven't any ideas of it...

OK after an hour I am ready to admit that this app does not work. Fortunately I was able to hold the buttons down at random and the iPod seems to boot up normally

I have an iPod touch, 2nd gen with the 3.0 software update. I tried jailbreaking it, and it wouldn't work... but then I realized that it was because I hadn't found the right .ipsw file!
If you have an iPod touch 2g 3.0 and are stuck at the "Waiting for reboot" screen, try going to "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates" and find the file that says "iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw". Then, open redsn0w and use this file you've found as the .ipsw file for jailbreaking. It should work this time!

OK I tried it again messing with the timing of the bootup and it worked! The firmware loaded and I finally managed to restart the iPod. But there is no visible difference and the Cydia icon is nowhere to be seen. How do I install Cydia or a Terminal?
Tried again and it turns out you need to be hairtrigger on the buttons. Too slow and it stalls out showing no progress forever. This time I tried to install BOTH ICY and Cydia but again no such icons have appeared. It seems like the iPod is not rebooting with the new firmware after loading it. Lots of pressing buttons and waiting to get it out of DF mode.
I just wasted 3 hours on this AGAIN! The reader should be aware that you can spend a LOT of time trying to make it work and get nowhere. Most of the time you are working blind, you have no feedback as to what the firmware loader is actually doing. Tonight, 3 times I got the firmware to load, ostensibly. But upon rebooting nothing had changed. At least, my understanding is that some visible change would be seen if the firmware actually loaded. There seems to be no website that coprehensively explains this stuff, so you are pretty much on your own.
What does "white flash on your screen and go on" mean? I have unplugged and replugged it in again and nothing is happening.

Got iPhone 3g 3.0 jailbroken on Xubuntu 8.0.4 with redsnow_0.8
Took me three tries.
Downloaded iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw twice, as the first time the file may have been corrupt.
1st time: iPhone on, turned it off when prompted, followed all steps. Phone remained blank and off throughout. Hung while restarting. Could not start phone afterward.
2nd time: iPhone off, Already off when prompted, ASA power button was pressed the Jailbreaking process started. I took my finger off the powerbutton and pressed no other buttons at this time. Phone flashed white, phone restarted. No Jailbreak took place.
3rd time: iPhone off, ditto, ditto. Kept finger on power button for 3 sec, on home and power buttons for 10 sec, just home button for ~ 30 sec...on the longer side. Phone flashed white, restarted, pineapple, Jailbroken.
Sorry this was so long. Hope it helped. Hope I don't sound like an idiot.

Dood. Get it thru iTunes. Connect iPod to PC with a live internet connection, wait for iTunes to launch (if it doesn't do it manually). Select ur iPod from the Devices list. On the Summary tab, click Check for Update.

i have gotten through this (ipod 2g) to the DFU mode step and i put it into DFU mode (i know this bacause when i open up itunes it says i am in recovery mode and i need to restore) but redsn0w wont recognise my ipod in DFU mode so i had to restore and try again. i have done this 3 times with no success and would REALLY apreciate some help. You need to use Firefox to download the files, not any other ( I do not know why)

If your iPod Touch does not reboot automatically after a few minutes, when redsn0w is waiting for it to reboot, you can try to plug out/in the USB cable on the iPod. Don't quit the program, it should right continue after the iPod comes back up.
Hey, you probably didnt hold the power button/home button for long enough so sometimes the ipod fails to restart. just try holding down the home button a bit longer at the end.

Yep, that seems to have done the trick. IPod Touch G1. I was hung on waiting to reboot, so I unplugged the USB cable and then plugged it back in, and the process continued.

I have been trying this for 2 hours now. It keeps stoping at stage 2, waiting for reboot. I have tried unplugging the cable and replugging-nothing. I have tried starting it over and it keeps doing the same thing after stage 2 it just sits there waiting for reboot.

Ye I have ipod 1st gen. After entering DFU mode and doing everything correctly, redsnow doesnt even start teh jailbreak and it just says DONE! Then I have to manually reboot which doesnt do anything.

You can't download it from here. It costs 10 bucks on apple, so you have to buy it or find another one.
Manually unplug while Waiting for reboot is on screen worked for me. Make sure to plug back into same usb port you were using.
i went threw all the steps and it went like you said but after the screen that said jail break on it, it went to this screen where it had a picture of the ubs cord and itunes above it...
my phone wouldnt let me do anything else but restore...

I HAVE A SOLUTION:
All of you guys having problems with the waiting for reform, all you have to do is reset your iphone by holding power and home at the same time, and when the apple logo comes up, let go of the power button but keep holding the home button.
It will put you in DFU mode and you should be on your way.
I had the same problem where it didn't do anything while waiting to re-boot. Did unplug it from the Iphone directly and plugged it in back and finished no problem!
holy crap i love this. ive been trying to jailbreak my ipod for like two weeks now, and i finally found this. worked so well, took less than 5 minutes. just awesome!
1st Time; Screwed up initialising the DFU mode, bricked it and had to restore.
2nd Time; Turns out I had the wrong software file, bricked it again (XD) and had to restore.
3rd Time; I'm typing it as it happens, it's worked fine (I think) and it's just on the Downloading Jailbreaking data screen, and I pressed done. The other stuff has downloaded though, I saw it. Anyway, I hope it works. =)
I had the same problem with redsn0w 0.8 not restarting my iPod touch 1G, so I downloaded redsn0w 0.7 from Demonoid and it worked with no problem. Seems like just this version has a problem with iPod touch 1G.
iM going through the process now and seems ok so far. In the past I had the same problem with quickpwn. it would get stuck on the preparing step. everytime I would unplug and plug back in and a windows error message would pop up, I would close and start over and it would start the next time. This happened every single time.
@Samuel you probably used safari to download the Ipsw safari messes with 'em use firefox to download them.
Hi for what it's worth I can confirm that when it hangs during 'waiting for reboot' it will hang indefinitely but unplugging and re-plugging the USB at this stage will make it work like a charm. Excellent work guys.
i jailbreak it and everything. and it goes through the kernel and ramdisk or whatever/. and it says done. but the "Downloading Jailbreak Data" stays on the screen with the loading circle thing under it. then it just goes back to the connect to itunes image. Why?

I had the same problem as Spooky and Josh above, but then I just tried again to put the iPhone into DFU mode and it worked the second time around. I also did the "unplug-replug" usb cord trick when restarting. That got me back into my iphone 3G where I could use my apps, but then I had to further download ultrasn0w in order to make calls.
This worked for me...held both buttons, then released power and waited and it moved on the rest of the process...strange but its working now so I'm happy.

me too this isnt working out well i get the screen that says now downloading jailbreak data and its got the loading thing at the bottom but my screen says done and the ipod just sits there with it. it wont turn off or turn on idk what \to do with it

got everything to work... my next step was putting my t-mobile sim card in and it doesn't recognize? what do i need to do?
Having the same problem as the rest, problem with step #9:
9. Once your device has successfully entered DFU Mode, redsn0w will show the following message: “Please wait while your device is being jailbroken. Waiting for reboot.” Your device should reboot after this.
It def enters DFU mode, but it does not reboot. I have to keep turning iTunes on to restore it. Will try unplugging and replugging in the usbb cable next.
People don't panic, when in doubt restore your iphone/ipod and start again.

Unplugging and replugging the USB works like a charm. So when it is "waiting to reboot" just do that and you'll be fine.
I'll be posting it on my site tonight as well for anyone who needs more details, or decent Cydia apps.
So i just got version 3.0 for my my itouch and the redsn0w jailbreak is stuck at waiting for reboot....what shall i do?
Hey guys I have had the same issue... I tried relentlessly to get mine to jailbreak. I spent hours trying to jailbreak. Restored system countless times. I then came across this link and it gave me a idea and I found the answer for you all I hope. If you have the usb cable connected through a hub disconnect it and plug it directly into the computer. Works sweet. I hope you all can share this with anyone having the same issue. Please post if this works for you. I hope it does.

I had my USB going to a hub not directly into the computer. You never mentioned that at all. It make a HUGE difference. I had tried what you said and it does not work at all. If you plug the USB to the computer directly (and not through a hub) then you wont have to do what you said and it works.

I had a hell of a time with this. Vista kept throwing an error when "Waiting for reboot". (I hate M$ anyway).
Loaded in Ubuntu. It also failed as a normal user. Here's how I fixed it...
Open a shell
Switch to SuperUser (sudo if you haven't changed yet)
mark@mark-desktop:~/jailbreak$ su
Copy the .Xauthority file to the /root directory so the GUI will work
root@mark-desktop:/home/mark/jailbreak# cp /home/mark/.Xauthority /root
Run the program
root@mark-desktop:/home/mark/jailbreak# ./redsn0w
Run through the prompts as listed. One step tells you to disconnect the USB and reconnect. It completed normally.

After following all the steps on my Itouch 2.2.1, I am stuck on downloading jailbreak data... screen.
I have read through every single comment here, tried unplugging the USB, tried waiting it out, etc, but it's still stuck on that screen after trying multiple times.
I'm sure i am not the only one with this problem. If anyone has any more suggestions I should try, help would be appreciated!
had the same prob about rebooting... the secret that worked for me was...
as soon as it says "waiting for reboot" (never having let go of home buttom), unplug usb and connect again to computer, and keep holding the home for the full 30 seconds. It will finally kick into the second stage and finalize quickly. Takes max 2 minutes.

I found that the same trick worked for me. Without it, the Redsnow, or my iPod touch 2G kept waiting. Funny, I've been out of the jailbreak scene for way over a year now - since the introduction of 2,0, I have used the App Store even though there are some great tweaks which allow better use of my iPod.
While I don't pirate apps, I don't understand Apple's decision to guard functionality which is inherent in the hardware. iPhone 3G video recording is one of those functions which was available only to jailbreakers - something which is quite a shame on apple.

im having a problem with the 3rd stage. My itouch 2.0 goes through fine for the first 2 stages but I waited an hour for the third stage to end but it didnt. Any ideas??? help
I am having a problem finding the IPSW file. This is the first time I have done it in windows and when I unzipped the file that I downloaded from the link there was no IPSW to be found within the zip file... anyone know where or what I should do for windows? Thanks in advance!

Guys, I spent hours to jailbreak and unlock my iphone 2G (v2.2 unlocked), and having the same issue as many people and stuck on "downloading jailbreak data…" screen
I finally figured out the solution. You will need to update your iphone to v3.0 first. I've done it through iTune (must be itune version 8.2 or above). Once you updated to v3.0, you just try to use this redSnow0.8 to jailbreak again and I can easily pass that stupid "downloading jailbreak data...." screen
So you cannot just use this redSnow0.8 to jailbreak it from v.2.2 to v3.0 directly.
still gets stuck at waiting for download data nothing seems to work help
I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6 and when it doesn't reboot just unplug and PLUG the usb back in without quitting redsn0w and it works wonders. GOOD LUCK!
My bad. I had mine plugged directly into the computer. Either way if it doesn't reboot, unplugging and replugging it into the computer directly should do the trick. I can't speak for any problems beyond that on Windows or Linux, I'm using Mac.
Hi Geoff. Try changing the .zip file extension to .ipsw....worked for me :)

This worked for me. When I got to the stuck screen, I hard rebooted the iphone (hold home+power) and then restored the iphone in itunes (using shift-click and the ipsw downloaded above). After that, I just reran redsnow and it worked. Thanks!

I change the zip extention for ispw but i did not have luck i still can't find ispw file. There aré several files due, what i am doing wrong? Do i have to unzip the downloaded file? Or just browSe it?
Well, my ipod touch 2g gets to the downloading jailbreak data thing, should i unplug my ipod? or just leave it there?

Now it finished, but then it just says i have to reboot again. Is that normal?
@hector: rename the zip to .ipsw, not ispw.. I think you miss spell it that's why you can't find it.. hope it helped!

Having issues installing this; have a 1G 3.0 but redsn0w crashes every time I try to install.. any idea why this happens? Rebooting, restoring and continuously holding down the home button don't do anything.
Mine says its "done" and asks me to click finished, but it doesnt install Cydia and I really find no difference. I believe i'm doing everything alright. I already installed Firmware 3.0 as it says above, I followed all the steps, etc. Can anyone help me?

I finished the 3 stages, and had everything finish loading on my ipod. Then the screen turned blank and the "on" or "home" buttons did nothing to bring it back on. What's the matter with it? And how can it recover. The computer won't recognize it either, so itunes can't restore...

can someone tell me why cydia or icy isent showing up on my springboard? i did the jailbreaking process and it said done but nothing is showing up on the springboard
my ipod is showing the itunes symbol with the usb pointing to it, so i plugged it back into the computer after doing all of that stuff up there^^ and it says it has to restore it?

I have done this (redsnow jailbreak) before on many devices but I tried it on an iPod touch 2g and after it says ipsw successfully identified (3.0) redsnow just closes out. I'm running it on xp with the same setup I used before. Any suggestions???!
i followedthe steps carfully and the message of the reboot stayed there for ages so i cancelled it and now my ipod dosnot work at all??????????!???!!!!!!!!

Uuh why is the Ipod touch 2G download link removed? :S
unplug and plug the cable and it should work fine
