Jailbreak Day: Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or iPod touch is now 100% LEGAL

iPhone hackers rejoice, this is the moment we have all been waiting for. Today is the day jailbreaking software has been made 100% legal. I hereby officially declare today Jailbreak Day, if you are on Twitter, please click here to tweet this (help #JailbreakDay TREND) also share/like on Facebook, and remember to follow @QuickPWN if you aren’t already. You can legally jailbreak iPhone 4G (no jailbreak available for this new phone yet), iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch. Now it was never ILLEGAL anyway, but Apple was trying to make it illegal. Thanks to the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) for sticking out for the iPhone hacking community, jailbreaking and unlocking any iPhone is completely legal.

Don’t confuse this with the iPhone EULA (End user license agreement), jailbreaking still voids the warranty on your iPhone. For those that don’t know, see the full jailbreak page to find out what jailbreak is.

You won’t be able to jailbreak the new iPhone 4 yet, but you can jailbreak the older iPhone. Just see our jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 post for more info if you are interested in jailbreaking.

iPhone jailbreaking doubles (UPDATED)

iPhone Analytics company, Pinch Media is reporting in their newsletter that the percentage of jailbroken iPhones increased from 8.43% to 17.1% in the week of August 2. The percentage of sessions from jailbroken iPhones also increased from 6.65% to 8.2%. 17% of all iPhone users have performed a jailbreak, that’s an impressive number! Apple will not be happy about this, they don’t like jailbreaking.

In the week of July 26, the percentage of jailbreakers increased from only 8.0% to 8.43%, so something happened in the week of August 2 that made a lot of iPhone users decide to jailbreak. I believe the banning of Google Voice apps from the App Store was responsible for the huge increase. If people can’t get their apps through the App Store they will jailbreak to get them from Cydia. Apple has put a lot of restrictions on the App Store and the iPhone that users have to jailbreak in order to get features/applications they want.

Update: There was an error in the newsletter that Pinch Media sent out, Katherine Pan has e-mailed an updated newsletter with the correct statistics.

“Oops! The 17.1% jailbroken statistic was the percentage of new users, not unique users, that were jailbroken – which is still significant; out of the almost a million new devices we saw last week, 17.1% were jailbroken. Unique Users on Jailbroken phones increased slightly from 8.43% to 8.6%. Sessions on Jailbroken phones increased slightly also from 6.65% to 6.7%. It is also worth noting that a new OS version, 3.0.1, has appeared. There are now 56.4% users and 57.2% sessions on 3.0, and 18.0% users and 17.1% sessions on 3.0.1, for a total of 74.4% users and 74.3% sessions on OS 3.0 or higher.” – Katherine Pan, Pinch Media

iPhone jailbreaking increases from 8.00% to 8.43%

Apple recently posted a document on their support site and tried to scare away people from jailbreaking. According to an iPhone analytics company, Pinch Media, the percentage of unique users using jailbroken iPhones went up from 8.0% to 8.43% in the week of July 26,2009. The percentage of sessions from jailbroken iPhones also increased from 6.2% to 6.65%.

Last week Apple removed the GV Mobile App, rejected the official Google Voice App, and banned all other Google Voice Apps from the App Store. The developer of GV Mobile, Sean Kovacs was not happy about this so he decided to add his application for free on Cydia. I’m not sure if this caused the increase in jailbroken iPhones last week, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Apple attempts to make jailbreaking look bad

To anyone new here, a jailbreak or jailbreaking is the process of gaining root access to your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPod Touch 2G, IPhone 3G, or iPhone 3GS. With root access you can install additional applications including Cydia, Icy, and apps that are not approved in the App Store.

Why are people jailbreaking?

We all know that Apple has a very strict App Store approval system, and they’ve rejected many apps from the App Store for strange reasons. There are also certain apps that Apple will never approve in the App Store. Thankfully developers who worked hard on their apps and had their apps rejected from the App Store can release it to jailbroken devices. People who jailbreak have access to cool apps that allow them to modify their device and do what they want with it. Apple should have allowed us to fully modify our own devices but they don’t like doing this.

What can I get by jailbreaking my device?

You can modify your Springboard/iPhone theme with the Winterboard app, you can mult-task with the Backgrounder app, you can unlock your iPhones, and a lot more interesting things.

Does jailbreaking void my warranty?

Yes, jailbreaking voids your warranty.

Apple’s recent post on Jailbreaking

Apple recently made an article making negative points about jailbreaking. They’re against it, why wouldn’t they? I’m going to list some of the points that they made below and also post my own arguments.

Apple says that jailbreaking causes device and application instability: This is only true if you install certain applications from Cydia. I’ve never had any problems with my apps. If any app causes problems you can simply uninstall it.
According to Apple jailbreaking causes unreliable voice and data: Apple is saying you get dropped calls, slow or unreliable connections, and delayed or inaccurate location data. This is not true, I have yet to experience this.
Your battery life is less due to jailbreaking: Your battery life can’t decrease just because of jailbreaking. It can however decrease depending on the apps you install, and the processes that you have enabled. If you installed SSH you must remember to turn it off whenever you’re not using it. If you’re using Backgrounder, it obviously uses more battery because it keeps the other apps enabled in the background.
Jailbreaking can make your device not work with future iPhone OS firmware: That’s not true. You can always factory restore your device to the original iPhone OS firmware if this happens.
