Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3 untethered

The iPhone 3.1.3 update that Apple released today caused people who updated to it to loose their jailbreak. My jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3 post has instructions on how users can jailbreak their device with older jailbreak software. The jailbreak did not work for any iPod touch device, but you can prepare for it by following the instrutions below.

If you want to just jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3, download iPhone userbar and you will receive an alert once the jailbreak is out. The user bar also has download links for the following firmware, so I recommend you download your firmware in advance so you can use it when you jailbreak.

Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3: Untethered vs tethered

An tethered jailbreak means your iPod touch will need to go through a jailbreak process again if you restart it, and untethered means that you won’t have to jailbreak every time you restart because the jailbreak is permanent. The tethered jailbreaks started coming when Apple patched an exploit that allowed an untethered jailbreak.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 safely

Apple released an iPhone 3.1.3 update that caused people who updated to it to loose their jailbreak. I made a jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 and a jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3 post with instructions on how users can jailbreak their device with older jailbreak software. The jailbreak did work for iPhone 2G, but it is not the most user friendly method. but may work for iPhone 3G 3.1.3, iPhone 3GS 3.1.3, or iPhone first generation.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3: blackra1n/redsn0w

The two most popular jailbreak tool are blackra1n, and redsn0w but they’re not ready yet. Once they’re released I’ll update here and post a guide.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3

The iPhone 3.1.3 update that Apple released today required users of jailbroken iPhones or iPod Touches to wait for a new jailbreak software to be released before updating. This jailbreak is for 3.1.2 but may work for iPhone 3G 3.1.3, iPhone 3GS 3.1.3, or iPhone first generation.

If you want to just jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 you can try the old jailbreak and see if it works, if not then you will need to just download iPhone userbar and you will receive an alert once the jailbreak is out.

Note: Do no’t use Safari to download iPhone 3.1.3 IPSW files, instead use another browser. Safari downloads this as a .ZIP and iTunes is not able to recognize the firmware that way.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 with blackra1n

1. Download blackra1n

2. Click the make it ra1n button.

3. Your iPhone or iPod Touch will reboot once blackra1n is done doing it’s thing and you should see the blackra1n icon on there. If you don’t see the blackra1n icon, go to the last page on your iDevice and you should see it.

4. Install your preferred application from the blackra1n app. You have the option of choosing Cydia, Icy, or Rock. I don’t recommend you to install them all at once, because that may cause problems. Install them one at a time.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 with PwnageTool

1. Download PwnageTool 3.1.4 (only works with Mac!)

2. You will be creating a custom IPSW and then restoring it through iTunes. If you don’t know how to do that, read my jailbreak iPhone 3.1 with PwnageTool post which gives step by step instructions.

Jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.1.3

Today the iPhone 3.1.3 update was released to iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch usres. This update includes mainly bug fixes. If you would like to jailbreak or unlock your device, you must read this. If you have an unlocked iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS do not update to this new firmware, updating to the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware will permanently update your baseband. The newer baseband does not support software unlocking.

The jailbreak has not been released yet, but you if you’ve got too much time on your hands you may be able to jailbreak if you try the following. If this works please share your results in the comments.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3

1. Update to iPhone 3.1.3. After updating, find your iPhone 3.1.3 IPSW file or download it using any of the links below. Remember, don’t use Safari to download. Safari can’t download .IPSW files properly, use a different browser!
If you are having trouble downloading the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware through the iTunes Application then you can directly download the appropriate firmware for your device by downloading iPhone userbar and clicking Downloads button and then downloading the appropriate firmware:

iPhone 3G 3.1.3 download (iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw, 242 MB)

2. Download jailbreak from iPhone toolbar (only works on Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer)

3. Follow the jailbreaking guide at the Jailbreak iPhone 3.1 post.

Unlock iPhone 3.1.3

It’s possible to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 but only if your baseband has not been updated to 05.11.07 or the newer baseband, you must create a custom firmware that uses the 04.26.08 baseband. The iPhone 3.1.3 update updates the baseband to a newer one that permanently blocks the software unlock. A guide on how to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 will be up once a jailbreak tool is released.

For now, follow downlolad iPhone toolbar and you’ll receive an alert once it’s released.

Jailbreak iPad

Apple announced their iPad tablet today and a lot of you may be wondering whether or not it is possible to jailbreak the iPad. The iPad currently runs on iPhone 3.2 OS which will only be available on the iPad, and not on the iPhone or iPod touch. There are many different teams of iPhone hackers which I am sure will attempt to jailbreak iPad once it’s released.

The problem is that Apple has been changing their hardware and software and trying hard to patch software exploits that are used in jailbreaks. This was apparent when the 24kpwn exploit was patched when Apple released a newer iPhone 3GS and iPod touch model. When Apple patched the 24kpwn exploit, users were required to jailbreak each time they rebooted their iDevice (also called tethered jailbreak). Is it possible for Apple to completely block the jailbreak in the iPad? I doubt it because there has always been an exploit that the iPhone hacking community have been able to find and use. At the very least we should be able to get a tethered jailbreak on the iPad. I’m pretty sure Geohot will be the one who can get us an iPad jailbreak as he is very skilled at this! We’ll just have to wait and see because the iPad won’t be released until about 60 days from now.

‘blackra1n’ jailbreak iPhone app is free, not blackrain

Many iPhone or iPod touch users use the blackra1n software to jailbreak. The blackra1n jailbreak app was created by geohot, and people use it to install Cydia, install iPhone themes, third party apps not available on the App Store, or unlock their iPhone. Unfortunately geohot named the program blackra1n with a “1″ in it. When people tell there friends to use “blackra1n” they will search for “blackrain”. I checked on Google and it looks like many users were searching for blackrain today since they got iPhones or iPod Touches as Christmas gifts. A search for blackrain brought up a sponsored result to a site that is charging for the blackra1n software. Do not buy it, it is free and we have a guide on how to install it here.

To jailbreak your iPhone with blackra1n view the guide here, and to jailbreak your iPod touch view the guide here. Please spell out blackra1n to your friends if you ever mention it to them, otherwise they may end up paying for it and getting scammed!

Uninstall blackra1n iPhone app

Did you recently jailbreak your Apple iPhone? You are going to want to delete the blackra1n iPhone app once you are done installing Cydia, Rock, or sn0w. To do this, just open the blackra1n iPhone app and tap on the red circle next to the “Uninstall blackra1n” button. Once you’re done tap on delete. Your iPhone or iPod touch will now respring and the blackra1n iPhone app will be uninstalled.

For those that don’t know what blackra1n is, it’s an iPhone app created by geohot that allows you to install Cydia, Rock, or unlock your iPhone to use with another carrier. People use blackra1n mainly to jailbreak/unlock and get iPhone apps that Apple wouldn’t approve in the App Store.

Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2

It’s Christmas, and I’m sure a lot of people got an Apple iPod touch as a gift. If you own an iPod touch, you may want to consider jailbreaking it. Why should you jailbreak? Check our jailbreak post for more info. Jailbreaking your iPod touch is pretty easy with blackra1n. Just follow the steps below!

Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 tutorial

1. Download the free iPhone OS 3 toolbar (on Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari) and install it.

2. Click the Downloads button and click on the Download blackra1n RC3 link to download it.

3. Connect your iPod touch to your computer and open the blackra1n application.

4. Click the make it ra1n button.

5. blackra1n will now put your iPod Touch in recovery mode and display the above image of Geohot. While in recovery mode, blackra1n will jailbreak your iPod touch.

6. Once blackra1n is done jailbreaking, your iPod Touch will reboot and you should see the blackra1n icon on your iPod touch screen.

7. Tap the blackra1n icon to open it. You have the option of installing either Cydia, Icy, or Rock. Select the applications you would like to install and then click the Install button to install them.

8. Once you’ve installed the applications, restart your iPod touch. To do that, just hold down the top button until the Slide to power off message appears. Slide the button, and wait for your device to turn off. Turn on your device and you should now see the applications you selected on your iPod Touch.

What now?

Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroken your iPod Touch, give yourself a pat on the back! Now you have access to a lot more applications and modifications that you will never see in the App Store. Jailbreak iPhone 3.12, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, or any iPod touch with blackra1n RC2

Two weeks ago, Geohot released his blackra1n iPhone 3.1.2 jailbreak. The blackra1n jailbreak software worked with all iPhones and iPod touches running on iPhone 3.1.2 firmware except for the newer 8GB iPod touch (MC models) that Apple released after the September 9 event. The blackra1n jailbreak also did not work on the newer iPhone 3GS which Apple patched the 24kpwn exploit in. blackra1n RC2 works with all iPhone and iPod touches, but the newer iPod touch and iPhone are only tethered jailbreaks. Tethered means that you will need to run blackra1n each time you reboot your iPhone or iPod touch. If you were an iPhone 3G user, you most likely had to try many different methods to get blackra1n to work. Geohot has fixed the iPhone 3G problem so blackra1n should now jailbreak without any problem.

If you already did jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch, you don’t need to use blackra1n again.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n RC2

Here is how you can jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 firmware using blackra1n RC2.

1. Download blackra1n RC2 (Available for both Windows & Mac)

2. Follow the steps at my jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 post.

blackra1n on Windows 7

I tried blackra1n on Windows 7, but it crashed when I first tried opening it. To get blackra1n to work on Windows 7, do the following:

1. Right-click the blackra1n icon and click properties.

2. Click the Compatibility tab.

3. Under compatibility mode click the box to enable it and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Click OK, and then run blackra1n.

I’ve only tried this on a Windows 7 32-bit setup, but it should work on a 64-bit setup as well.
