iPad your iPhone or iPod touch

If you are an iPhone or iPod touch user and you want to make your iDevice look like an iPad, you can easily do that now thanks to RoryPiper. You must first jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch, and to do that see our Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 or Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 post. If you don’t have WinterBoard, see our download and install WinterBoard post for instructions.

1. Install iPad theme

Open Cydia and search for Simple iPad theme, and install it.

2. Activate the iPad theme

Open WinterBoard and tap on the Simple iPad theme to activate it, and then exit WinterBoard.

3. Download Classics iPhone app

The iPad has a new App Store for just eBooks called iBooks, but there is a similar app in the App Store called Classics which is very similar. Click here to download the currently free Classics app for your iPhone or iPod touch.

Fix Cydia Crashing on jailbreak iPod touch and iPhone

Today Cydia keeps crashing for Apple iPod touch and iPhone users. Cydia is the main app that people use on their jailbroken devices. This post will show how you can fix the Cydia crash if you are experiencing it. There is no need to restore your device to fix it. I experienced this problem and following these steps fixed it for me.

1. Jailbreak you iPod touch or iPhone again

iPod touch users, see my jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 post. iPhone users see my jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 post.

2. Fix Cydia Crash using Clear Cydia Cache Tool

Download the Clear Cydia Cache tool from here, and then follow the steps below

Extract or uncompress the files
Open the ClearCydiaListCache file
Connect your iPod touch or iPhone to your computer
Click the “Connect your device and click here” button

Download iTunes for iPod touch and iPhone

Due to the holidays, we’ve got many new users here who recently got an Apple iPod touch or an iPhone. To use it you must first download and install iTunes. The instructions to download it and install it are below. iTunes is needed in order to sync your device, and also to download or sync applications or music from the App Store.

1. Download iTunes

Go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and click the Download Now button. Once it’s done downloading, install it.

2. Connect your iPod touch or iPhone to sync it

Connect your iPod touch or iPhone to your computer using the USB cable you got. It will now start syncing, and you will also be asked to create an iTunes account. Your iTunes account will allow you to download apps from the App Store.

While your device is charging or syncing, you may want to check out our jailbreak page and decide whether or not you want to jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 or jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2.

Set up WiFi on iPod touch and iPhone

If you are an Apple iPod touch user, you will need to set up WiFi in order to access the Internet. iPhone users don’t need WiFi, but they can still enable it if they want to. This post will show how WiFi can be enabled.

1. Go to the WiFi settings

Open the Settings application and go to General – > Network -> WiFi. If WiFi is off make sure you turn the slider to on.

2. Connecting to a network

To connect to a network, tap on the network you want to connect to. If the network is password protected, you will need to enter in the password. Once you’ve done this you’ll be connected to the Internet.

3. Testing the connection

You can test your connection by opening the Safari web browser and navigating to http://www.google.com.

Download and install Cydia on iPhone or iPod touch

Cydia is an iPhone app created by Saurik. It allows you to download iPhone apps that are not officially available in the Apple App Store. If you recently performed a jailbreak, follow the Cydia guide below.

1. Jailbreak you iPhone or jailbreak your iPod touch using blackra1n first. After installing Cydia through blackra1n, you should see the above Cydia icon on your homescreen. Tap the Cydia icon to launch it.

2. When Cydia first launches it will ask you to choose what mode you want to use. Just tap User (Graphical Only). You can go back and change this later if you wish to.

3. Cydia will now check for updates and present you with the above prompt saying something like 2 Essential Upgrades. Tap the “Upgrade Essential” button.

4. Now Cydia will ask you to confirm your selection. Tap the Confirm button in the top right.

5. Cydia will now start updating. Once the update is complete it will show a “Complete” message. You will need to restart Cydia, tap the Close Cydia (Restart) button.

That’s it, now Cydia is installed on your iPhone or iPod touch!

Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2

It’s Christmas, and I’m sure a lot of people got an Apple iPod touch as a gift. If you own an iPod touch, you may want to consider jailbreaking it. Why should you jailbreak? Check our jailbreak post for more info. Jailbreaking your iPod touch is pretty easy with blackra1n. Just follow the steps below!

Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 tutorial

1. Download the free iPhone OS 3 toolbar (on Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari) and install it.

2. Click the Downloads button and click on the Download blackra1n RC3 link to download it.

3. Connect your iPod touch to your computer and open the blackra1n application.

4. Click the make it ra1n button.

5. blackra1n will now put your iPod Touch in recovery mode and display the above image of Geohot. While in recovery mode, blackra1n will jailbreak your iPod touch.

6. Once blackra1n is done jailbreaking, your iPod Touch will reboot and you should see the blackra1n icon on your iPod touch screen.

7. Tap the blackra1n icon to open it. You have the option of installing either Cydia, Icy, or Rock. Select the applications you would like to install and then click the Install button to install them.

8. Once you’ve installed the applications, restart your iPod touch. To do that, just hold down the top button until the Slide to power off message appears. Slide the button, and wait for your device to turn off. Turn on your device and you should now see the applications you selected on your iPod Touch.

What now?

Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroken your iPod Touch, give yourself a pat on the back! Now you have access to a lot more applications and modifications that you will never see in the App Store. Today is Black Friday. If you live in the US you can get some pretty good deals from certain stores. If you are like me, you are smart and you’re shopping for your Black Friday products online instead of going to a store and waiting in line for hours. Walmart is selling the iPod Touch 3rd generation 32GB model for $278 (online only).

The starter kit includes a USB AC Wall Charger, Audio Splitter, Car Charger, Screen Protector Cleaning Cloth, 3.5 MM Cable, Carrying Pouch, 3 Silicone Cases (Clear, Black, and Pink), and an Airplane Adapter. This is a pretty good deal if you ask me, I paid full price for my iPod touch and didn’t get any extras.

The current price of the iPod touch 32GB on Apple’s website shows up as $299, but it will be adjusted later today when Apple launches it’s Black Friday sale. If you’d rather want to purchase from Apple, I recommend waiting until Apple.com launches the discounts on it’s website. I doubt they’ll include a starter kit like Walmart i including. Apple Black Friday Deals on Macbook, iMac, iPod touch, and iPod nano available tomorrow

Jailbreak iPhone 3.12, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, or any iPod touch with blackra1n RC2

Two weeks ago, Geohot released his blackra1n iPhone 3.1.2 jailbreak. The blackra1n jailbreak software worked with all iPhones and iPod touches running on iPhone 3.1.2 firmware except for the newer 8GB iPod touch (MC models) that Apple released after the September 9 event. The blackra1n jailbreak also did not work on the newer iPhone 3GS which Apple patched the 24kpwn exploit in. blackra1n RC2 works with all iPhone and iPod touches, but the newer iPod touch and iPhone are only tethered jailbreaks. Tethered means that you will need to run blackra1n each time you reboot your iPhone or iPod touch. If you were an iPhone 3G user, you most likely had to try many different methods to get blackra1n to work. Geohot has fixed the iPhone 3G problem so blackra1n should now jailbreak without any problem.

If you already did jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch, you don’t need to use blackra1n again.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n RC2

Here is how you can jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 firmware using blackra1n RC2.

1. Download blackra1n RC2 (Available for both Windows & Mac)

2. Follow the steps at my jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 post.

blackra1n on Windows 7

I tried blackra1n on Windows 7, but it crashed when I first tried opening it. To get blackra1n to work on Windows 7, do the following:

1. Right-click the blackra1n icon and click properties.

2. Click the Compatibility tab.

3. Under compatibility mode click the box to enable it and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Click OK, and then run blackra1n.

I’ve only tried this on a Windows 7 32-bit setup, but it should work on a 64-bit setup as well.

Jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.1.2

Update #1: Go to my jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n post to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch!

Today the iPhone 3.1.2 update was released to iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch usres. This update includes mainly bug fixes. If you would like to jailbreak or unlock your device, you must read this. If you have an unlocked iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS do not update to this new firmware, updating to the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware will permanently update your baseband. The newer baseband does not support software unlocking.

The jailbreak has not been released yet, but you if you’ve got too much time on your hands you may be able to jailbreak if you try the following. If this works please share your results in the comments.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2

1. Update to iPhone 3.1.2. After updating, find your iPhone 3.1.2 IPSW file or download it using any of the links below. Remember, don’t use Safari to download. Safari can’t download .IPSW files properly, use a different browser!

iPhone 3.1.2 download (iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 241 MB)
iPhone 3G 3.1.2 download (iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 242 MB)
iPhone 3GS 3.1 download (iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 306 MB)

2. Download redsn0w.

3. Follow the jailbreaking guide at the Jailbreak iPhone 3.1 post.

Unlock iPhone 3.1.2

It’s possible to unlock iPhone 3.1.2 but only if your baseband has not been updated to 05.11.07 or the newer baseband, you must create a custom firmware that uses the 04.26.08 baseband. The iPhone 3.1.2 update updates the baseband to a newer one that permanently blocks the software unlock. A guide on how to unlock iPhone 3.1.2 will be up once a jailbreak tool is released.
