Download iOS 5.0 Beta 4 Firmware for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

On Friday, Apple released the iOS 5.0 beta 4 firmware update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Developers can download iOS 5.0 beta 4 from the iOS Dev Center. What surprised us is that Apple finally enabled OTA (over the air) updates. This means beta testers will now be able to easily update their device without the need of iTunes. If you are currently on iOS 5.0 Beta 3 you can simply update to iOS 5.0 beta 5 software by going to General -> Software Updates in the Settings menu.

From my experience it took 10 minutes to update, but the timing may vary depending on your network connection speed.

You must have a developer account in the iOS Dev Center in order to download iOS 5.0 beta 4 software from the links below.

iOS 5 beta 4 can be installed using over the air software update from devices that have iOS 5 beta 3 installed. Over the air software update can be initiated by choosing General > Software Update in Settings.

This version of iOS is intended only for installation on development devices registered with Apple’s Developer Program. Attempting to install this version of iOS in an unauthorized manner could put your device in an unusable state, which could necessitate an out of warranty repair.

Devices updated to iOS 5 beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iOS. Devices will be able to upgrade to future beta releases and the final iOS 5 software.

A pre-release version of Apple TV Software is being provided in order to test AirPlay functionality with your iOS 5 apps.

Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview, iOS 5 beta, iTunes 10.5 beta and Apple TV Software beta are pre-release software and are considered Apple Confidential Information and are subject to the terms of your iOS Developer Program License Agreement. Unauthorized distribution or disclosure of Apple Confidential Information is prohibited.

As part of this pre-release iOS beta software, Apple will be collecting, using, storing, and analyzing diagnostic and usage logs from your device in order to improve the product, unless you opt-out. The location of your device may also be sent to help Apple analyze wireless or cellular performance issues (e.g. the strength or weakness of a cellular signal in a particular location).

iOS 4.3.3 Download For iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch To Be Released Soon

UPDATE: iOS 4.3.3 is out, and you can now download iOS 4.3.3.

Popular technology site, BGR has gotten their hands on an iOS 4.3.3 download (iPhone3,1_4.3.3_xxx_Restore.ipsw is the name of the file, and the build number has been blurred out) which they say will be released by Apple soon. No exact date for the iOS 4.3.3 is known, but it could be released within the next two weeks or earlier. This update will bring the following changes:

Location database will no longer be backed up to iTunes
Location database size will be reduced
When Location Services are turned off, location database will be deleted entirely
Battery life will improve
iPod bug fixes

If you jailbreak and you plan to download iOS 4.3.3 for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch please note that it may fix the untethered exploit in the current iOS jailbreak, so make sure you check back here first before you update.

Jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch, and iPad

Now that iOS 4.3.1 download is out, many iOS users will want to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1. Unfortunately no jailbreak has been released for iOS 4.3.1 so users who want to jailbreak should stay at the jailbreak firmware they are at right now if they want to keep their jailbreak. If you want to unlock your device or jailbreak your iPad 2 then stay away from iOS 4.3.1 for now! The only person that announced an ETA for their jailbreak is iPhone hacker i0n1c, and he initially said that his untethered jailbreak may be released sometime this week. In the jailbreak world it is hard for any hacker to give any ETA on when a jailbreak comes out so we will just need to wait and see whenever a jailbreak is released.

If you only use “official” jailbreaks then you’ll need to wait for either Chronic Dev Team to update their greenpois0n jailbreak software to support iOS 4.3.1, or iPhone Dev Team to update their redsn0w or PwnageTool jailbreak software to support iOS 4.3.1.

Apple has released iOS 4.3.1 download for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G, iPad 2, and iPad. This update fixes bugs and also improves battery life. You can get the direct download links for iOS 4.3.1 firmware below or you can just update through iTunes.

[WARNING] If you want to unlock your device or jailbreak iPad 2, then stay away from this update for now.

Verizon iPhone users are stuck at iOS 4.2.6 for now.

Skype Video Chat for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad added in Skype 3.0

We knew it was going to happen, but we didn’t know it’d be this soon. Today Skype released Skype 3.0, which adds support for video chat on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation. You can grab Skype 3.0 download here.

iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation users can now video chat on Skype over their 3G connections, although using WiFi is recommended for better quality.

iPad users and iPod touch 3rd generation users can receive and view video chat requests from iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation users, however they cannot show their own videos because they don’t have a camera.

Skype Video chat is free, but additional data charges may apply depending on the plan you’re using. Thankfully I signed up with AT&T early and am on the unlimited data plan, so I don’t need to worry about that.

There is no word on when Skype video chat support will come out for Android or other mobile users. I’m sure Skype will be giving us an update on this when they hold their Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event on January 6, 2011.

Skype to Bring Video Call Support for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

Skype is going to be announcing new video calling products on January 6, 2011 during the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event. Only those that have received invite will be able to attend.

Unfortunately for Skype, someone ruined part of their announcements by finding a webpage on Skype which details some products that will get video calling. If you went to this link earlier (now down) you would of seen the following:

To make video calls with your contacts, you will need an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3rd generation iPod touch, 4th generation iPod touch or an iPad. Your contacts will only be able to see you if your device has a camera. Make sure your device is running iOS 4.0 or above and that you are using Skype for iPhone 3.0 or above.

The contacts you are calling must be using one of the following Skype clients:

Skype for Windows version 4.2 and above
Skype for Mac OS X version 2.8 and above
Skype for iPhone 3.0 and above

You can make Skype video calls by using a WiFi or 3G connection*. The quality of the video will depend upon the available network conditions.

Additional data charges may apply. Check with your operator for details.

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch with two cameras – front and rear – you will be able to switch between them during a Skype video call. If you have an iPhone 3GS it will always use the rear camera.

If you turn your device into landscape mode, the camera picture will automatically rotate.

In both portrait and landscape mode double tapping anywhere on your screen will zoom the picture to take up the full extent of the screen. Double tapping again will take the picture back to its normal size.

While on a Skype video call the sound will always be played through the loudspeaker, unless a headset is plugged into the device.

During a video call tap your screen to display the camera and microphone controls. Tap and hold down the microphone button to put the call on hold. To resume the call, simply tap the hold symbol on the screen.

The page has now been pulled down by Skype for obvious reasons, but it’s good to know that they are finally bringing video chat to the iPhone, and iPod touch, and… iPad!!! Skype indirectly confirmed that the iPad is getting a camera. Not sure if this is true or not, but we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, enjoy your holidays everyone.

Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 Guide for iPhone 4.2.1, iPod touch 4.2.1, and iPad 4.2.1

If you’d like to jailbreak iPhone 4.2.1, iPod touch 4.2.1, or iPad 4.2.1, you can do so by following the guide below. Currently the only tool that supports iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak right now is redsn0w (by iPhone Dev Team).

The other jailbreak tools: greenpois0n (by Chronic Dev Team), and limera1n (by Geohot) haven’t been updated to support the jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 yet.

IMPORTANT: We recommend that only iPhone 3G, and older iPod touch users jailbreak. This jailbreak is only untethered for the older iOS hardware. All of the newer devices are tethered, meaning you will need to re-jailbreak each time you reboot your iDevice. If that is fine with you, then go on and jailbreak.

Download iUserbar new – click here (works on Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari)
In iUserbar new, click the “Downloads” button and then click on your iOS 4.2.1 firmware to download it.
In iUserbar new, click “Downloads” and click on Download redsn0w to download redsn0w.
Now open redsn0w, and click the Browse button.
Locate your device’s IPSW file that you downloaded in step 2 and click Open.
The redsn0w window will have the “IPSW successfully identified” message. Click the Next button to continue.
redsn0w will ask you to “Please select which options you would like to have“. Make sure the Install Cydia box has a check on there and then click Next.
redsn0w will ask you to make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to your computer. Make sure you plug in your device in to your computer and then turn it off. Click Next once you have done this.
redsn0w will now ask you to connect your device in DFU mode.

Hold down the Power button for 3 seconds
Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (bottom center button) for 10 seconds
Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button BUT KEEP holding the Home button for 30 seconds

If you don’t do this properly you will get a DFU Mode Failed message and you’ll have to go back to step one.
Once this process is complete, your device will restart and it will have the Cydia icon!

Jailbreak iOS 4.2

Device Compatibility

All iOS devices will be jailbreakable on iOS 4.2 and future firmware updates. This means you can jailbreak iPhone 4 4.2, jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.2, jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.2, jailbreak iPhone 2G 4.2, jailbreak iPhone 4.2, jailbreak iPod touch 4G 4.2, jailbreak iPod touch 3G 4.2, jailbreak iPod touch 2G 4.2, jailbreak iPod touch 4.2, jailbreak iPad 3G 4.2, and jailbreak iPad 4.2 firmware.

Tethered Jailbreak vs Untethered Jailbreak

Some devices may be tethered. This means that you will need to jailbreak iOS 4.2 each time you reboot your iOS device. Untethered jailbreak means you only need to jailbreak once and you can reboot without having to jailbreak iOS 4.2 every time. The good news is that most of the devices will be untethered.

You will be able to jailbreak iOS 4.2 with either redsn0w (Windows,Mac, Linux), greenpois0n (Windows,Mac, Linux), or limera1n (Windows, Mac). iPhone 3G and 3GS users will be able to unlock iOS 4.2 through a newer version of ultrasn0w, while iPhone 4 users will have to wait.

limera1n iOS 4.1 4.0.2 4.0 Jailbreak for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch Released

The well-known iPhone hacker George Hotz aka Geohot has finally released the limera1n jailbreak for iPhone 3GS 4.1/4.0/4.0.2/4.0, iPhone 4 4.1/4.0/4.0.2/4.0, iPod touch 3G 4.1/4.0/4.0.2/4.0, iPod touch 4G 4.1/4.0/4.0.2/4.0, and iPad 3.2.2 hardware. Currently limera1n only works on Windows, but it should come to Mac and Linux soon.

Grab the limera1n download for Windows from this link. The limera1n jailbreak software doesn’t use the SHAtter exploit unlike the greenpois0n jailbreak which does. When Geohot released limera1n he upset the greenpois0n jailbreak team (Chronic Dev Team) because Chronic Dev Team didn’t want 2 different exploits being released at once. Geohot has forced Chronic Dev Team to save the SHAtter exploit and remake greenpois0n to use the same exploit that Geohot used in his limera1n jailbreak. Unfortunately this move by Geohot may delay the greenpois0n jailbreak, and push it past the original release date of 10/10/10 10:10:10 AM GMT.

The jailbreak scene is really getting interesting. I’m sure a lot of you will be happy though because limera1n has support for 3GS and 3G (oops, it doesn’t support 3G for that you can use redsn0w), unlike greenpois0n which only had support for 4th gen devices because it used a different exploit. Greenpois0n Release Date For iOS 4.1 Jailbreak Days Away

The greenpois0n release date is anticipated by many iPhone and iPod touch users who want to jailbreak iOS 4.1. I know many of you here have been eagerly waiting for it to be released, and have been upset by the fact that no ETA has been given as to when it will be released. Be happy now, because finally, pod2g, the one who made the SHAtter jailbreak exploit revealed, made a tweet saying that the greenpois0n download will be released in days.

The greenpois0n jailbreak software (for those that don’t know what it is) uses the SHAtter exploit to jailbreak iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch on iOS 4.1 firmware. It is an easy to use GUI which will be available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Greenpois0n is NOT an unlock, and if you want to unlock your device then you must wait for another tool to be released.

As we get closer to the launch of greenposi0n I’d like to advise everyone to steer clear of any greenpois0n downloads that you see on torrents or pay for any download as those are fakes and contain viruses.
