Two weeks ago, Geohot released his blackra1n iPhone 3.1.2 jailbreak. The blackra1n jailbreak software worked with all iPhones and iPod touches running on iPhone 3.1.2 firmware except for the newer 8GB iPod touch (MC models) that Apple released after the September 9 event. The blackra1n jailbreak also did not work on the newer iPhone 3GS which Apple patched the 24kpwn exploit in. blackra1n RC2 works with all iPhone and iPod touches, but the newer iPod touch and iPhone are only tethered jailbreaks. Tethered means that you will need to run blackra1n each time you reboot your iPhone or iPod touch.  If you were an iPhone 3G user, you most likely had to try many different methods to get blackra1n to work. Geohot has fixed the iPhone 3G problem so blackra1n should now jailbreak without any problem.

If you already did jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch, you don’t need to use blackra1n again.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n RC2

Here is how you can jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 firmware using blackra1n RC2.

1. Download blackra1n RC2 (Available for both Windows & Mac)

2. Follow the steps at my jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 post.

blackra1n on Windows 7

I tried blackra1n on Windows 7, but it crashed when I first tried opening it. To get blackra1n to work on Windows 7, do the following:

1. Right-click the blackra1n icon and click properties.

2. Click the Compatibility tab.

3. Under compatibility mode click the box to enable it and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Click OK, and then run blackra1n.

I’ve only tried this on a Windows 7 32-bit setup, but it should work on a 64-bit setup as well.

Today the iPhone 3.1.2 update was released to iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch usres. This update includes mainly bug fixes. If you would like to jailbreak or unlock your device, you must read this. If you have an unlocked iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS do not update to this new firmware, updating to the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware will permanently update your baseband. The newer baseband does not support software unlocking.

The jailbreak has not been released yet, but you if you’ve got too much time on your hands you may be able to jailbreak if you try the following. If this works please share your results in the comments.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2

1. Update to iPhone 3.1.2. After updating, find your iPhone 3.1.2 IPSW file or download it using any of the links below. Remember, don’t use Safari to download. Safari can’t download .IPSW files properly, use a different browser!

• iPhone 3.1.2 download (iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 241 MB)
• iPhone 3G 3.1.2 download (iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 242 MB)
• iPhone 3GS 3.1 download (iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 306 MB)

2. Download redsn0w.

Unlock iPhone 3.1.2

It’s possible to unlock iPhone 3.1.2 but only if your baseband has not been updated to 05.11.07 or the newer baseband, you must create a custom firmware that uses the 04.26.08 baseband. The iPhone 3.1.2 update updates the baseband to a newer one that permanently blocks the software unlock. A guide on how to unlock iPhone 3.1.2 will be up once a jailbreak tool is released.

Today is September 9, 2009. Apple will be holding their It’s Only Rock and Roll Live Event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 1:00 PM Est/ 10:00 AM Pacific time.

Apple is expected to reveal the new iPod Touch 3rd Generation (with camera), iPod nano 5th generation, and iTunes 9 software update. The prices of the iPod Classic were reduced, and the Apple Store is down right now. In about an hour from now we will be live blogging the Apple Rock and Roll event on QuickPWN.com. Before the Apple Store went down, Apple had reduced the price of the iPod Touch, iPod Nano, and iPod Classic models. The price changes are listed below.

Price changes:

• iPod Touch 8 GB: Was $229, now $189
• iPod Touch 32 GB:  Was $399, now $279
• iPod Nano 16 GB: Was $199, now $149
• iPod Classic 120 GB: Was $249, now $229

It’s obvious that these prices were changed in preparation for the new iPod Touch 3rd Generation and new iPod Nano’s that Apple will be announcing at their live event today. At 1 PM Est/10 AM Pacific Apple will hold their It’s Only Rock and Roll event.

Although the new iPod Touch third generation has not been officially announced by Apple yet, Best Buy has already added the Belkin iPod Touch Third generation case on their website. Oops, I’m sure Steve Jobs must not be happy with them right now!

In case the item gets removed from Best Buy’s website I’ve added a screenshot above. The new iPod Touch 3rd Generation will be announced by Apple tomorrow at their September 9 event in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Tomorrow, September 9, 2009 is the day when Apple will be holding the “It’s only rock and roll” event. This event will be held in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 1 PM Est (10 AM Pacific).

If you look closely at the picture for this event, you’ll notice that the headphones are at the bottom of the iPod. This indicates that the iPod in the picture is an iPod Touch and not an iPod Classic. Apple is most likely going to discontinue the iPod Classic and release a newer iPod Touch.

Here is what I believe Apple will be releasing on September 9:

1. iPod Touch 3rd Generation – The iPod Touch 3rd generation is expected to be released tomorrow. It will have a camera that allows you to take pictures and videos. The new iPod Touch 3rd generation will also have faster speeds than the current iPod Touch.

2. New iPod Nano – There are rumors of Apple launching a new iPod Nano just like they did at last year’s September 9 event.

3. iTunes 9 – iTunes 8 was released on September 9, and it would not surprise me if Apple releases iTunes 9 on tomorrow’s event. iTunes 9 will have blu-ray support, social integration, and also allow you to manage your apps and rearrange them on your iPhone/iPod Touch screen right from iTunes.

On September 2 at 2:05 AM five thieves broke in to the Apple Store in Marlton, New Jersey. The thieves striked the Apple Store’s glass door with an object and shattered it to pieces.The five thieves were very professional and skilled. They each went in different directions and stole Macbook Pros worth over $3,000.

In all, the thieves stole 23 Macbook Pros, 14 iPhones, and 9 iPod Touches. These were all gone in 31 seconds!

There have been at least three cases of exploding iPhones and iPod Touches this year. A 15 year old boy’s iPod Touch exploded, melted his underwear and burned his leg. An 11 year old girl’s iPod Touch exploded, and Apple offered her a refund but required her to keep quiet about it. The most recent case was when ateenager in France was playing with his girlfriend’s iPhone, and it exploded.

A spokesmen from Apple Europe Ltd said that they will examine the exploded iPhones or iPod Touches and try to find out why they exploded once they receive them. Stay tuned, I’ll be making a post once Apple has examined and reported more information on the exploded iPhones/iPod Touches.

A topic on the WeiPhone forums seems to have leaked pictures of what appears to be the iPod Touch third generation. All I could see in the pictures is the new Camera app icon and a camera on the back of the iPod Touch. Besides that nothing else seems to have changed.

I think Apple will also double the RAM and offer the iPod Touch with more memory as well if or once it comes out in September. Video recording is one of the key features of the iPhone 3GS, will Apple add it to the iPod Touch third generation? Even if they don’t, lots of people will be jailbreaking their iPod Touches to download video recording applications from Cydia.
