Jailbreaking May Become Illegal Soon, Help Keep it Legal and Act Now

Jailbreaking was officially declared legal on July 26, 2010 by the U.S. Copyright Office. Unfortunately the ruling handed down by the U.S. Copyright Office was not permanent and it will be expiring soon, and if it doesn’t get renewed then jailbreaking will not be legal anymore. The EFF wants to convince the U.S. Copyright Office to renew the jailbreaking exemption, and also expand it to tablets and allow the jailbreaking of video game consoles as well.

You can help keep jailbreaking legal by submitting comments to the U.S. Copyright Office. Go to EFF’s Jailbreaking is Not A Crime webpage, read their page, and following their link to submit your comments to the U.S. Copyright Office. The deadline for submitting your comments is on February 10 at 5 PM Eastern, so be sure to submit your comments by then.

Apple Announces New iPhone 4S Phone in Lets Talk iPhone Event

Apple has just announced their new iPhone called the iPhone 4S in their Lets Talk iPhone Event. The iPhone 4S release date is October 14, and preorders start on October 7. The design is the same, but it’s all new inside. It will be available on Sprint! According to Apple CEO Tim Cooke “We see it scream on games”. The new iPhone 4S has a new A5 chip inside, it’s dual core, and it’s up to 7 times faster than the previous iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S will also support HSPDA so it will download with faster data speeds as well. It will support both GSM/CDMA. The new camera is 8 Megapixels. Follow the live Lets Talk iPhone event here.

New iPhone 4S price (with 2-year contract): $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB.

So here are the key details of the iPhone 4S so far:

Dual Core processor and Dual core graphics

8 Hours of talk time, 14 hours of 2G talk time, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 9 hours of WiFi browsing, 40 hours of music, and 10 hours of video

Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple

Today is a really emotional day for Apple fans. Apple CEO Steve Jobs resigned from Apple. Apple’s Board of directors have named Tim Cook the new CEO of Apple. Steve Jobs is not leaving Apple entirely, he will still be working in Apple as Chairman of the board.

Here is Steve Job’s letter that he wrote to the board:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Download iOS 5.0 Beta 4 Firmware for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

On Friday, Apple released the iOS 5.0 beta 4 firmware update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Developers can download iOS 5.0 beta 4 from the iOS Dev Center. What surprised us is that Apple finally enabled OTA (over the air) updates. This means beta testers will now be able to easily update their device without the need of iTunes. If you are currently on iOS 5.0 Beta 3 you can simply update to iOS 5.0 beta 5 software by going to General -> Software Updates in the Settings menu.

From my experience it took 10 minutes to update, but the timing may vary depending on your network connection speed.

You must have a developer account in the iOS Dev Center in order to download iOS 5.0 beta 4 software from the links below.

iOS 5 beta 4 can be installed using over the air software update from devices that have iOS 5 beta 3 installed. Over the air software update can be initiated by choosing General > Software Update in Settings.

This version of iOS is intended only for installation on development devices registered with Apple’s Developer Program. Attempting to install this version of iOS in an unauthorized manner could put your device in an unusable state, which could necessitate an out of warranty repair.

Devices updated to iOS 5 beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iOS. Devices will be able to upgrade to future beta releases and the final iOS 5 software.

A pre-release version of Apple TV Software is being provided in order to test AirPlay functionality with your iOS 5 apps.

Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview, iOS 5 beta, iTunes 10.5 beta and Apple TV Software beta are pre-release software and are considered Apple Confidential Information and are subject to the terms of your iOS Developer Program License Agreement. Unauthorized distribution or disclosure of Apple Confidential Information is prohibited.

As part of this pre-release iOS beta software, Apple will be collecting, using, storing, and analyzing diagnostic and usage logs from your device in order to improve the product, unless you opt-out. The location of your device may also be sent to help Apple analyze wireless or cellular performance issues (e.g. the strength or weakness of a cellular signal in a particular location).

iOS 4.3.3 Download For iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch To Be Released Soon

UPDATE: iOS 4.3.3 is out, and you can now download iOS 4.3.3.

Popular technology site, BGR has gotten their hands on an iOS 4.3.3 download (iPhone3,1_4.3.3_xxx_Restore.ipsw is the name of the file, and the build number has been blurred out) which they say will be released by Apple soon. No exact date for the iOS 4.3.3 is known, but it could be released within the next two weeks or earlier. This update will bring the following changes:

Location database will no longer be backed up to iTunes
Location database size will be reduced
When Location Services are turned off, location database will be deleted entirely
Battery life will improve
iPod bug fixes

If you jailbreak and you plan to download iOS 4.3.3 for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch please note that it may fix the untethered exploit in the current iOS jailbreak, so make sure you check back here first before you update.

With iOS 4, your iPhone & iPad 3G tracks and records your location!

A team of UK researchers have discovered a disturbing feature which Apple added in iOS 4 software: Your iPhone’s and iPad 3G location is recorded constantly along with timestamps. The problem is that your location and timestamps are saved in a file named consolidated.db, which is unencrypted. Your locations are stored both on your iPhone/iPad 3G, and on your desktop once you sync it with iTunes. If you synced your iPhone /iPad 3G on another person’s computer then that person can access that file and see your locations.

Of course cell phone companies already track wherever you go, but the problem here is that Apple is tracking it and recording the data in an unencrypted file without permission and without your knowledge. We don’t know why Apple is recording this data and what they intend to use it for. There is no need to be paranoid about this as the data isn’t sent to Apple’s server, it stays with you only (for now).

If you are worried about this, and want to protect yourself then don’t sync your iPhone/iPad 3G on any public computer and open iTunes and make sure you check the “Encrypt iPhone Backup” /”Encrypt iPad 3G Backup” option so your data is encrypted.

iOS 4.3 Download Links

Apple has released the iOS 4.3 download for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. They originally announced that the iOS 4.3 software update would be released on March 11, the same day as the iPad 2 but looks like they decided to release it early. Make sure you update your iTunes to before downloading iOS 4.3 because you’ll need to use the latest version in order to update (which is currently iTunes 10.2.1). Nitro JavaScript engine (improves performance of Safari browser).

iPhone Alarm Won’t Work on New Years 2011, Here’s a Fix

If you are an iPhone user on iOS 4.2.1 software (could be older iOS firmwares too), please know that your alarm clock won’t work in 2011. There have been users on Twitter that have been complaining about this as well as a huge discussion post on Apple Discussion board. I waited until it was New Year’s in my area and sure enough my alarm clock didn’t work. The iPhone alarm bug will fix itself on January 3, but if you want to fix your phone now you can simply fix it by editing the alarm and setting it to repeat for multiple days.
