Device Compatibility

All iOS devices will be jailbreakable on iOS 4.2 and future firmware updates. This means you can jailbreak iPhone 4 4.2, jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.2, jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.2, jailbreak iPhone 2G 4.2, jailbreak iPhone 4.2, jailbreak iPod touch 4G 4.2, jailbreak iPod touch 3G 4.2, jailbreak iPod touch 2G 4.2, jailbreak iPod touch 4.2, jailbreak iPad 3G 4.2, and jailbreak iPad 4.2 firmware.

Tethered Jailbreak vs Untethered Jailbreak

Some devices may be tethered. This means that you will need to jailbreak iOS 4.2 each time you reboot your iOS device. Untethered jailbreak means you only need to jailbreak once and you can reboot without having to jailbreak iOS 4.2 every time. The good news is that most of the devices will be untethered.

Jailbreak iOS 4.2 Software

You will be able to jailbreak iOS 4.2 with either redsn0w (Windows,Mac, Linux), greenpois0n (Windows,Mac, Linux), or limera1n (Windows, Mac). Unlock iOS 4.2 Details

iPhone 3G and 3GS users will be able to unlock iOS 4.2 through a newer version of ultrasn0w, while iPhone 4 users will have to wait.

iOS 4.2 Update Details

Notable new features in iOS 4.2 for iPad include Multi-tasking, Folders, AirPrint, and Game Center. New features in iOS 4.2 for iPhone and iPod touch include AirPlay, Ringer Volume Control, FaceTime, and improved performance on iPhone 3G.

There is no iOS 4.1 jailbreak out yet. I previously posted about the SHAtter jailbreak, which will purportedly jailbreak all iOS devices for life. Greenpois0n is a jailbreak tool by the Chronic Dev Team which is a simple easy to use jailbreak that should be able to jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone, and iPod touch.

The greenpois0n jailbreak software was announced many months ago, but recently the Chronic Dev Team updated the greenpois0n website with a new logo shown above. The website update may be a hint of the greenpoison jailbreak being released soon.

A recent tweet by a pod2g, a Dev Team member on Twitter, says: “p0sixninja ‘s epic greenpois0n works well on iPhone 4G ! (need to work on the framebuffer code tho ! )”. In the jailbreak world release dates are one thing that no one actually knows until the actual jailbreak software is released. The iOS 4.0.1 is a small update, so it doesn’t make sense for anyone to release a software unlock for it yet. Apple will issue a iOS 4.1 update at some point in the near future, so you should wait to unlock iOS 4.1 instead of waiting to unlock iOS 4.0.1.

About two days ago we discovered that the iPhone 4 can be unlocked. Credit goes to planetbeing and MuscleNerd, both members of the Dev Team for working on this. Apple released the  iOS 4.0.1 download today to resolve the reception issues iPhone 4G users were having. In case you’re wondering, yes it’s possible to do a iPhone 4.1 jailbreak.

Although you can jailbreak iPhone 4.1, you should hold off on updating to iOS 4.1. In fact don’t even update to iOS 4.0.1 yet, because it’s just a small update. Apple will be releasing an iOS 4.1 download (no ETA on that) which will be a bigger update, so I recommend waiting for that. It’s also important to note that if you want to unlock iOS 4.0.1 don’t update until we know the iOS 4.0.1 update doesn’t block the unlock.

Apple has just released a beta of the iOS 4.1 download to iPhone Developers in the Dev Center. We’re getting a flood of e-mails with people asking if it’s possible to jailbreak iOS 4.1.

Yes, it’s possible to jailbreak iOS 4.1, but don’t expect an iOS 4.1 jailbreak just yet. Right now iOS 4.1 is in beta, Apple will release a certain amount of betas of it to test it first before dropping the iOS 4.1 update to public. After Apple has released the final iOS 4.1 update, you can expect a jailbreak. Remember, if you want to unlock iOS 4.1 don’t update until we know the iOS 4.1 update doesn’t patch any exploit.
