Enable MMS on AT&T iPhone 3G 3.1 or iPhone 3GS 3.1

In just 4 more days AT&T will issue a software update which will allow iPhone 3G/3GS users to use MMS for free. AT&T originally planned on enabling MMS for iPhone users earlier, but they had to delay it because they wanted to make sure their network would be able to handle all the MMS traffic. In this post I will show you how you can enable MMS on your iPhone 3G/3GS on iPhone 3.1 firmware right now. All credit goes to Aaron Krill for this.

Note: I am not responsible for anything that happens to your device as a result of following this tutorial. Performing this hack may void your iPhone’s warranty. If this does not work then just wait until September 25, AT&T will issue a free update that allows you to enable it. If you get a red exclamation mark after following this tutorial, then that means you’ll just need to wait for AT&T to officially release MMS.

Enable MMS on AT&T iPhone 3G/3GS using Mac

1. If you have iTunes open, then right-click and click Quit to close iTunes.

2. Go to Applications -> Utilities and open the Terminal application.

3. Copy and paste the following command in to Terminal: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

4. Press Return on your keyboard.

5. Download IPCC file (right click this link and save it as ATT_US.ipcc).

6. Connect your iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS to your computer and open iTunes.

7. Press Option on your keyboard and at the same time click on Update in the iTunes window.

8. Locate your ATT_US.ipcc file you downloaded in step 5 and click Choose.

9. Time to reboot your iPhone. Hold down the top button of your iPhone until the “slide to turn off” message appears, slide and turn your iPhone off. Turn your iPhone on again and it should have MMS on it!

New iPhone OS 3.1 anti-phishing feature in action

The iPhone OS 3.1 update which Apple recently released includes a new anti-phising feature that alerts you when you visit fraudulent websites. To those who don’t know what phishing is, it’s basically websites disguised as other sites and steal your login information once you type it in. For example, you might click on a link in your e-mail that looks exactly like PayPal.com, but it’s actually PayPal352352353.com and the person who set it up wants to steal your login. The iPhone 3.1 anti-phishing feature notifies you when you come across a website like this.

By default the anti-phishing feature is turned on in iPhone OS 3.1. If you’re not sure whether or not it’s on, go to Settings -> Safari and slide the “Fraud Warning” button to ON.

Here is what it should look like:

I decided to test this anti-phishing feature on multiple websites. Safari was able to detect and give me a warning each time my iPod Touch visited a phishing website. This new feature of Safari is really effective. I feel safer browsing webites on my iPod Touch now. You can see the anti-phishing message in action on the top of this post.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1

Update: This tutorial does not install Cydia, in other words you must wait for iPhone Dev Team to release the new redsn0w software. When I saw the successfully jailbroken message on the screen I thought Cydia was installed and in all the excitement I decided to post this up for everyone else. Please wait until the new redsn0w is out. Bookmark this site and I’ll make a tutorial once it’s officially released.

With the iPhone 3.1 update which was recently released, jailbreakers will need to jailbreak their devices again. This update fixes a lot of bugs that were present in the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware, has anti-phising built-in and other cool features. In this post I will explain how to jailbreak iPhone 3.1 using redsn0w.

Note: This tutorial will be using redsn0w version 0.8. There is no redsn0w 3.1 out yet, but this worked for me on 1st Generation iPod Touch 3.1. It may not work for iPhone. If this does not work then don’t complain! I recommend you wait for the Dev Team to release the next version of redsn0w (which may be some time this week). I’ll make another tutorial once they do.

If you unlocked your iPhone and you want to keep your unlock, then don’t update to iPhone 3.1 otherwise you won’t ever be able to software unlock again (iPhone 3.1 updates the baseband permanently).

You must update to iPhone 3.1 first (if you have an unlocked iPhone you must not update yet as this will permanently lock your iPhone). After updating, either locate your iPhone 3.1 IPSW file or download it using any of the links below. Do not use Safari, instead use Firefox or Internet Explorer to download otherwise this will download as a Zip file!

3. Follow the jailbreaking guide below.

Note:

redsn0w only recognizes iPhone 3.0 firmware (not 3.1 yet!), although you are running firmware 3.1 you must still download iPhone OS 3.0 firmware for your device.

First you must download redsn0w for Windows, Mac, or Linux from here.

redsn0w 0.8 might work for Phone 3.0.1, iPhone 3G 3.0.1, iPhone 3GS 3.0.1, iPod Touch 3.0, and iPod Touch 2G 3.0.

1. Download the iPhone OS 3.0 IPSW file for your device and save it to your desktop. Here are the file names for each device, make sure you have the right one:

iPhone 2G – filename: iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw [download link]
iPhone 3G – filename: iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw [download link]
iPhone 3GS – filename: iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw [download link]

2. Open the redsn0w 0.8 application to jailbreak iPhone 3.0.1.
3. Click the Browse button.

4. Locate your device’s IPSW file that you downloaded in step 1 and click Open.

5. The redsn0w window will have the “IPSW successfully identified” message. Click the Next button to continue.

Jailbeak and Unlock iPhone 3.1

Today the iPhone 3.1 update was released to the public. This update fixes a lot of bugs that were present in the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware. If you want to jailbreak or unlock your device, follow the steps below. If you have an unlocked iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS do not update just yet, updating will permanently lock your device and the ultrasn0w unlocking software won’t work.

The jailbreak has not been released yet, but you can do the following to prepare for it.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1

1. You must update to iPhone 3.1 first. After updating, either locate your iPhone 3.1 IPSW file or download it using any of the links below. Remember, don’t use Safari to download. Safari can’t download .IPSW files properly, use a different browser!

Unlock iPhone 3.1

To software unlock iPhone 3.1, you must create a custom firmware that uses the current baseband. The iPhone 3.1 update updates the baseband to a newer one that permanently blocks the software unlock. A guide on how to unlock iPhone 3.1 this will be up later.

iPhone 3.1: iTunes Update

Today Apple has finally released the iPhone 3.1 update that many iPhone users have been waiting for. This update fixes a lot of bugs that were present in the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware released in June and also supports the new Apps Management feature in iTunes 9.

How to update to iPhone 3.1

1. Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your PC.

2. Launch the iTunes application and click the Check for updates button.

3. iTunes will show you the above window saying: “iTunes will update your iPhone to iPhone 3.1 software and will verify the update with Apple“. Click on the Update button.

4. An iPhone OS 3.1 software update window will show up, click on the Next button. Read and and accept the license agreement. Once you’ve done that your download will start.

5. The file size of this update varies depending on which device you’re updating. Once the iPhone 3.1 firmware update is done downloading it will start the installation process on your iPhone.

Note: Don’t use Safari to download iPhone 3.1 IPSW files, instead use another browser. Safari downloads this as a .ZIP and iTunes is not able to recognize the firmware that way.

iPhone 3.1 Jailbreaking information

iPhone 3.1 Beta 3

The iPhone 3.1 beta 3 firmware build 7C116a and iPhone 3.1 beta 3 SDK build 9M2808 has been released to iPhone developers. The file size is 307 MB. If you’re a developer, you can head on over to the Apple Developer Central and download it. The beta 2 firmware expires July 28 at 12:00 AM, so now is the time to update! If you’re not a developer don’t download this update, wait until Apple releases the final iPhone 3.1 update.

New features in iPhone 3.1 beta 3:

Copy and paste videos – You can now copy and paste videos in your e-mails. There is a 15 MB limit for copying/pasting videos or images. This limit is most likely there to save bandwidth usage.
Tethering counter – If you go to Settings -> Genral -> Usage on your iPhone, you’ll notice Tethering data which shows how much tethering you’ve used. Note: Tethering is not available to AT&T users yet.
Springboard icons – When you hold down the Springboard icons they no longer vibrate.
Baseband updated – The baseband has been updated to 05.11.04.
Camera API additions

Reminder: If you own a jailbroken iPhone 3GS or an unlocked iPhone 3G/3GS, do not update once the official 3.1 firmware update is out. The 3.1 update will permanently block the ultrasn0w/purplesn0w software unlock. It could potentially block the iPhone 3GS jailbreak as well.

iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 2 and iPhone SDK 3.1 Beta 2 is out!

Developers, Apple has just released iPhone 3.1 beta 2 (Build 7C106c). Head on over to the Apple Developers Central to download and try iPhone 3.1 beta 2.

iPhone SDK 3.1 beta 2 and iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 are now available on the iPhone Dev Center. These versions are for development and testing only and should be installed on devices dedicated to iPhone OS 3.1 beta software development. Please read the iPhone OS beta Pre-Install Advisory and the iPhone SDK 3.1 beta 2 release notes before downloading and installing.

If you’re using an unlocked iPhone 3G/3GS, stay away from this update. This update permanently upgrades your baseband and fixes the exploit that the ultrasn0w and purplesn0w use!
