Apple starts Patent war with HTC

Today Apple sent a press release announcing that they’ve filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing 20 of Apple’s patents related to iPhone interface and the underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed with U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

Apple is specifically going after HTC’s phones that are running Google’s Android software rather than the phones that are running Windows Mobile. By suing HTC for using Android’s operating system, is Apple trying to scare other manufacturers from using Google’s Android operating systems on their future devices? This is what it looks like to me. Going through the boring list of patents Apple listed in their complaint, I noticed that one of the patents they complained about was the “Swipe to unlock” feature. I find it ridiculous that a company can patent these types of simple features, and hope that Apple looses this case. If you are bored you can see a list of all the patents here.

HTC Desire Superphone

HTC has just announced their new smartphone named HTC Desire. HTC calls the HTC Desire a superphone rather than a smartphone, just like Google calls their Nexus One a superphone as well. This phone will run on Android 2.1 and have the beautiful HTC Sense UI just like HTC’s other phones. The HTC Desire has a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacative touch screen with pinch-to-zoom, and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It will ship with Adobe Flashplayer 10.1 software.

Unfortunately the HTC Desire won’t be available in the US, but the Nexus One is a good alternative for US users. Te HTC Desire will be available to customers across major European and Asian markets in early Q2. The HTC Desire will also exclusively be available in Australia through Telstra. More Nexus One Google Phone photos and details emerge

Over the weekend a lot of information about the upcoming Google Phone, the Nexus One was discovered. Today Engadget has got some quality photos of the Nexus One and more details about it. Their photos revealed the following:

Nexus One can run on T-Mobile
Nexus One will have the Android 2.1 operating system
There is a QR code on the back of the Nexus One
There is no HTC logo on the Nexus One

Pictured above is a photo of the Nexus One running on Android 2.1. What’s different about this is that it has an animated wallpaper in the background, and if you look near the bottom you’ll see a screenshot of all the current open windows. Android 2.1 has a new way of managing multiple apps, similar to the way Palm uses cards in their webOS.

Just yesterday we discovered that the phone Google is working on is called the Nexus One and is being manufactured by HTC, and also found a leaked Nexus One picture. The name Nexus One was neither confirmed or denied by Google. Although Google hasn’t said anything, we have found Google mentioning the Nexus One name on their Google website.

If you go to http://www.android.com/holidays you will notice an image with the Welcome to Nexus One screen. Google has placed a script that will automatically take you out of the game if it detects that you are not using the Nexus One phone to access this. If you know how to fake your useragent, you can still access this by changing your useragent to nexus one. Pictured above are the different Droid pictures that are in the game.

I admit that I had doubts as to whether Nexus One was the real name or the code name, but now I don’t any more because of seeing Google mentioning it on their website.

More information about the Google Nexus Phone which Google sent to it’s employees just keeps getting leaked. I guess Google didn’t require their employees to sign any NDA’s (nondisclosure agreements) so they are allowed to post pictures and reviews of it on the web. Most of the information we’ve discovered about the Nexus One has been posted on Twitter already.

The picture above was posted by Cory O’Brien on Twitter. Here is what he had to say about the phone:

Google Phone = iPhone + a little extra screen and a scroll wheel. Great touch screen, and Android.

So far everyone that has leaked details about this phone has had a positive attitude about it, do you think this could be the iPhone killer?

Nexus One

Google itself has confirmed that they are working with a partner and building a new device with new mobile features and capabilities. Jessica Vascellaro from the Wall Street Journal posted that the name of the phone is the Nexus One phone and it’s being manufactured by HTC, and John Gruber from Daring Fireball even reported seeing a Nexus One in his traffic logs. Google has not confirmed the name is Nexus One, but until they do that’s the name we will be referring to their phone as.

Google Nexus One phone

Earlier today we learned that Google is working on their own Google Phone, and has sent it to their employees around the globe. The name of the phone has now been discovered by the Wall Street Journal, and it’s called the Nexus One. Google is not building the phone, and it’s being manufactured by HTC.

Instead of a carrier like Verion/AT&T/Sprint offering this phone, Google is going to be offering it unlocked, and you will have to set it up with a carrier on your own.

We’ve heard people saying that the Nexus One phone is thinner than the iPhone, it has no physical keyboard, and runs on a snapdragon chip but these details are not confirmed. Daring Fireball reports seeing a Nexus One phone in their traffic logs, and so does the Boy Genius Report:

Daring Fireball sees Build ERD56C in their traffic log, while Boy Genius Report sees Build ERD72 (which is a more recent build). I’ll definitely keep you all posted if any more information about the Nexus One is leaked. Once information gets on the Internet, it spreads fast!

HTC Touch Pro2 available on Verizon Wireless

You can get it for $199.99 with a 2-year contract, $269.99 for a 1-year contract, or $489.99 for a Month to Month price.

The key features of the HTC Touch Pro 2 include a 3.2 Megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and Visual Voice Mail. It has Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, but I believe you can update to Windows Mobile 6.5 once it’s released in October.

HTC Touch Pro 2 coming to Verizon on 9/11

Today Verizon announced in a press release that the HTC Touch Pro 2 will be available online at www.verizonwireless.com and in stores on Friday, September 11. The price is $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a 2-year contract. The HTC Touch Pro 2 will be available in Black.

The phone uses Windows Mobile. Key features of Verizon’s HTC Touch Pro 2 include a 3.6 inch touch screen, QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, TouchFLO 3D interface, 512 MB ROM, Qualcomm 528 MHz processor, and WiFi. You can read the full specs at Verizon’s press release page.
