Geohot To Work on iPad 2 Jailbreak

The first hacker to jailbreak iPad 2 hardware was comex from iPhone Dev Team, but he is still working on the actual jailbreak. P0sixninja, the developer of the greenpois0n jailbreak software is also trying to develop an iPad 2 jailbreak and challenged famous iPhone hacker geohot to make an iPad 2 jailbreak himself.

Geohot accepted the challenge by p0sixninja and he will be buying an iPad 2 and trying to develop a jailbreak for it soon. Stay tuned iPad 2 users. Now that we have comex, p0sixninja, and Geohot working on trying to get an iPad 2 jailbreak out, we just might get an iPad 2 jailbreak soon.

Jailbreak iPad with blackra1n, after iPhone 4G

Geohot has just made a blog post with a screenshot confirming that he has been able to jailbreak iPad on firmware 3.2. Geohot is a reputable iPhone hacker, and we can trust that he is not faking his screenshot. You can see a blackra1n icon and a Cydia icon in his screenshot. The blackra1n iPad jailbreak is not out yet, but we can expect Geohot to release it after June, when the new iPhone 4G is out.

If Geohot releases the blackra1n iPad jailbreak before iPhone 4G is released, Apple can easily patch the exploit he is using for the iPad.

iPad jailbreak: greenpois0n, geohot, and iPhone Dev Team

Now that the iPad has been released, many users will want to wait for an iPad jailbreak to enable all the features that Apple has not included in the iPad software. This includes multi-tasking, themes, and a lot more. There are three methods that can get us an iPad jailbreak, and these are: greenpois0n, geohot, and iPhone Dev Team.

1. greenpois0n iPad jailbreak

greenpois0n is an upcoming jailbreak utility created by the Chronic Dev Team. Screenshots have been posted by p0sixninja, one of the main members but he has not announced anything else.

2. geohot

Geohot has proven himself many times. He has created the easiest jailbreaking software ever (blackra1n), so personally I would wait for him to create the iPad jailbreak. Geohot has said he won’t be releasing the iPad jailbreak until the other iPad 3G is out because Apple can patch the exploit before then and this won’t benefit many people.

3. iPhone Dev Team

The iPhone Dev Team consists of a lot of smart iPhone hackers. Although the iPhone Dev Team is usually not quick in releasing jailbreaks, their jailbreaks are always the most reliable.

purplesn0w unlock is here!

Geohot has just released his own iPhone 3GS software unlock and named it purplesn0w. Who is purplesn0w for? If you own a jailbroken iPhone 3GS running firmware 3.0 and you want to unlock it to use it with another carrier (T-Mobile only in the USA), then purplesn0w is for you. Are you experiencing wifi/battery/other unlocking problems after using ultrasn0w? Then I highly recommend you try purplesn0w. Geohot says that it’s the best unlock out there.

purplesn0w patches three files: CommCenter, lockdownd, and wildcard. It also uses tha at+xlog exploit that Oranav found. As of right now purplesn0w is in beta, but I thought I’d post it here since a lot of users here have been reporting issues with the current ultrasn0w unlock from the iPhone Dev Team. If you’re using a jailbroken iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS and want to unlock, please try purplesn0w and tell us how it goes.

Here is how to install purplesn0w:

* Make sure you have a legit activated iPhone 3GS. If you have T-Mobile make sure you disable 3G in the settings.

Open Cydia, and add http://apt.geohot.com to your sources
Install the com.geohot.purplesn0w package
Watch for the success output in Cydia
Reboot your iPhone 3GS

Once you have followed the steps above, your iPhone 3GS should be unlocked! Don’t forget to post your unlocking experience in the comments.

Update: Geohot has also posted technical details of purplesn0w here along with the source code of purplesn0w. He plans to release an updated version of purplesn0w with hactivation support.
