For those that aren’t familiar with it, Cydia is the name of a third-party App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch. Many users jailbreak their device to get access to the apps and also to unlock or theme their device the way they want to. Our jailbreak page lists all the reasons people jailbreak. Today, Cydia started crashing due to some files in the ZodTTD repository and a lot of people started searching for “cydia crashing” on Google. Cydia crashing is the 4th most searched keyword right now on Google! To fix the Cydia crash, you can either SSH in to your device, and fix it or you can rejailbreak and follow the fix cydia crash guide here.

I’ve experienced Cydia crashing many times, and would recommend that you try the Rock app instead. Rock is a faster and better alternative to Cydia, and can be installed through blackra1n.

Fix Cydia Crashing on jailbreak iPod touch and iPhone

Today Cydia keeps crashing for Apple iPod touch and iPhone users. Cydia is the main app that people use on their jailbroken devices. This post will show how you can fix the Cydia crash if you are experiencing it. There is no need to restore your device to fix it. I experienced this problem and following these steps fixed it for me.

1. Jailbreak you iPod touch or iPhone again

iPod touch users, see my jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 post. iPhone users see my jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 post.

2. Fix Cydia Crash using Clear Cydia Cache Tool

Download the Clear Cydia Cache tool from here, and then follow the steps below

Extract or uncompress the files
Open the ClearCydiaListCache file
Connect your iPod touch or iPhone to your computer
Click the “Connect your device and click here” button

Download and install Cydia on iPhone or iPod touch

Cydia is an iPhone app created by Saurik. It allows you to download iPhone apps that are not officially available in the Apple App Store. If you recently performed a jailbreak, follow the Cydia guide below.

1. Jailbreak you iPhone or jailbreak your iPod touch using blackra1n first. After installing Cydia through blackra1n, you should see the above Cydia icon on your homescreen. Tap the Cydia icon to launch it.

2. When Cydia first launches it will ask you to choose what mode you want to use. Just tap User (Graphical Only). You can go back and change this later if you wish to.

3. Cydia will now check for updates and present you with the above prompt saying something like 2 Essential Upgrades. Tap the “Upgrade Essential” button.

4. Now Cydia will ask you to confirm your selection. Tap the Confirm button in the top right.

5. Cydia will now start updating. Once the update is complete it will show a “Complete” message. You will need to restart Cydia, tap the Close Cydia (Restart) button.

That’s it, now Cydia is installed on your iPhone or iPod touch!

See a screenshot of this theme below. As you can see it looks very nice on the iPod Touch/iPhone. This theme was created by 6mik-design.

In this post I will show you how you can get this theme on your iPod Touch or iPhone.

How to Install Whitoken on your iPod Touch or iPhone

You will need to first jailbreak, then install WinterBoard, and then add additional applications in order to install this theme. I will guide you through the process.

Part 1: Jailbreak and Install Cydia

In this part I will show you how to jailbreak and install Cydia on your iPod Touch/iPhone.

1. Download redsn0w, and check our guide on how to jailbreak your iPod Touch or jailbreak your iPhone.

2. You should see the above Cydia icon on your homescreen. Tap the Cydia icon.

Official Google Voice App Blocked from App Store

Yesterday Apple removed all Google-voice related iPhone apps from the App Store, and they also rejected the official Google Voice iPhone application. They are saying that the Google Voice apps “duplicate features that come with the iPhone”. Unfortunately due to Apple’s strict App Store policies, we will never see a Google Voice App on the App Store.

A Google Spokesperson has told us the following:

We work hard to bring Google applications to a number of mobile platforms, including the iPhone. Apple did not approve the Google Voice application we submitted six weeks ago to the Apple App Store. We will continue to work to bring our services to iPhone users — for example, by taking advances in mobile browsers.

Not only should we be blaming Apple for rejecting the Google Voice app, but we should be blaming AT&T as well. John Gruber from Daring Fireball says that Google Voice apps are banned from the App Store because of AT&T:

Well, so much for my speculation. A reliable little birdie has informed me that it was indeed AT&T that objected to Google Voice apps for the iPhone. It’s that simple.

Thankfully, Sean Hovac the developer of the GV Mobile app has decided to release his app for free on Cydia. You can jailbreak your iPhone and download it.

How to get GV Mobile:

Jailbreak your iPhone
Open Cydia
Tap the Search button
Type in GV Mobile
Tap the app, and hit the install button!

GV Mobile Features:

Dial numbers (domestic for free and international at a variable rate) via the iPhone’s address book or typing in on the keypad
Send SMS messages
Retrieve and delete recent call history
Playback and delete voicemails
Take calls from different phones other than your iPhone
Add, delete, enable, or disable the phones that Google Voice forwards calls to

Update: Google Voice is still in beta, if you didn’t get a Google Voice invite from Google then you cannot use this yet. Some users have also been reporting that this app crashes. Sean Kovac is working on fixing it.
