Smile Guide: How to downgrade 3.0 to 2.x FW *1G Touch*

Been having issues with battery life with the new 3.0 firmwarm so I decided to downgrade back to 2.2.1. Since there hasn't been a guide to downgrade from an official release I'll be making one up for those who wants to downgrade to a lesser FW.

    Here goes...

    1. Firstly, you will need to grab an older version of itunes, you can download that here. I downloaded the 8.0 version, you could also use 8.1.

    2. Have the firmware already downloaded, e.g 2.2.1 or lesser.

    3. Now uninstall your latest itunes which should be 8.2. If it asks you to reboot, don't reboot just yet. Go to users/administrators/music/itunes and delete the folder "itunes". You may want to move out your mobile applications folder elsewhere if you don't want your apps deleted.

    4. Reboot...after reboot, uninstall quicktime.
-If you were not ask to reboot the first time you uninstalled itunes, go ahead and uninstall quicktime too, itunes 8.1 and below will need to use their existing quicktime versions to open successfully.

    5. Download your 8.1/8.0 itunes and install. When it asks to restart, go ahead and restart...thats a lot of damn restart!

    6. When restart is complete, open itunes and connect your ipod touch, a window will pop up and alerts you to use the latest itunes to use with the new 3.0 firmware. Don't worry about that, you want to downgrade anyway!

    7. We will now put the ipod in DFU mode, make sure your ipod is connected and itunes is open, have your speakers up a little so you could here that device detected beeps. READY?
    - TURN OFF the ipod touch by holding both the sleep and home button until the slide to power off shows up, SLIDE to turn off.
    - When it is completely turned off, wait 2-3 seconds, NOW PRESS and HOLD the SLEEP and HOME button for 10 seconds (start counting when you have pressed BOTH buttons), after 10 seconds has passed keep holding the home button, you should hear a beep and a window will pop up in itunes asking to check for firmware update. Click "check" and it will detect that you ipod is in recovery mode!

    8. OK, do the usual SHIFT+Click to restore the ipod to older firmware versions. Jailbreak if needed!

Hopefully this guide will be of help to anyone whose wanting to downgrade from 3.0. Features were nice, but battery life was went down the drain. The next firmware should fix this battery issue, but for now i'm sticking to 2.2.1! Peace guys!

    Exclamation How to Downgrade.

Is there a way to downgrade with out uninstalling and installing itunes because I can't do it because there are parental controls blocking me from doing so.

Default Almost - but not quite

I have a 1g iTouch as well- and have been afflicted with the same battery life issue when I went to v3. So I have been trying to Downdgrade back to 2. When I found this straight forward walkthrough I thought I was saved. I had of course tried everything but uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling an older version - so when I read this I thought Eureka! This is it!

Well- close, but no cigar. I got one step closer and now I have an Unknown (1600) error.

Any ideas before I chuck this once very nifty media player into a lake? I hear the ZuneHD will be pretty rockin ... But it'll also be a few hundred bucks.

I followed your directions to a T - but got jammed up at the very end

Try this, restore your ipod to 3.0 again and when itunes ask if you want to restore from backup or setup as a new, select new. I did this with my other touch and it worked nicely, no more battery issue, also you could turn off push notification by downloading sbsettings from cydia.

Well- I have battled and battled and feel like I have lived in DFU mode longer than I have had the 1G working the past month.

Before the "upgrade" in Firmware - all was well in my little iTouch 1g-land. Then I had the idea to buy the firmware upgrade and life just went downhill.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled I think every version of iTunes there is. In the most recent events I figured it could not hurt, so I downloaded the latest iTunes 9(x64) and allowed the touch to go to the latest firmware.
I figured perhaps the change in firmware - to ANYTHING would help- it certainly could not hurt.

    No avail.

This is where I stand at the moment - as I have surely hosed things up royally at this point.

Windows 7 does not recognize the iTouch in the Windows Explorer window anymore. It shoes my other drives just fine- and any USB drive I add - just not the iTouch.
Windows Explorer WILL recognize my old Nano however - as will iTunes

My iTouch now has 3.1.1 firmware on it. It appears to charge normally - yet I cannot get 3 minutes of use out of the battery before it just shuts down. And often it will not turn back on unless it is plugged in. When I do turn it on - it takes literally a minute for it to boot up off of the "apple" screen". And when it does power up, it shows the battery power down to a little more than half full.
even while plugged in. But it bounces back up to full after a few minutes.

I took a gamble to see if the latest firmware and software would make a difference - and I was very wrong. No Windows 7 itself will not even recognize it.

So- I realize this is asking a lot.. but could you tell me what process you would follow at this point to try to back this down to 2.2.1? I am at my last straw and may very well dedicate myself to drinking professionally after this.
