No 2.2.1 firmware found, Posted 03-26-2009, 05:41 PM #1 (permalink)
I'm trying to Jailbreak my iPod Touch 2G using Quickfreedom. I've installed LIBUSB but the program cannot find the original 2.2.1 firmware, so I figured "no problem, I'll just download it with this hand dandy download button", I saved the download to my desktop and hit browse to goto the file location, problem was it didn't show up as an Apple firmware update so I couldn't select it (couldn't even try as it appeared like it wasn't there in the first place). So I tried unpacking the .rar file and it just gave me several files that I assume are all part of the firmware update, but again, I can't select any of them to load into Quickfreedom. Can anybody help me? By the way I'm using Windows XP.

Oh, and if anyone knows how to manually put third party apps onto the ipod after the jailbreak using Diskaid (I don't have wireless), I would really appreciate a tutorial.

Wow, that was quick. Funny thing is, I actually was using your guide to Jailbreak my iPod. It's very well laid out, pretty easy to understand. The problem is it doesn't solve my current problem. I downloaded the Firmware file which comes in .rar format but Quickfreedom does not recognize it as a firmware update and as such will not let me select it.

Otherwise your guide has been very informative

You need WinRAR to unpack it, i'll add this info to my guide, thx for the info ...

Oh wait i just checked the link, it is a .ipsw file so should work, did you choose it through QuickFreedom?

yeah I did but it got downloaded as a WinRAR file that Quickfreedom is not recognizing. And if I unpack it it just unpacks into a whole shitload of different files and folders that I assume were supposed to be packed together into one .ipsw file so now I don't really know where to go from here.

I'm using Safari as my web browser if that helps at all.

Ok, try changing the file ending from ".rar" to ".ipsw".
Hope that'll help! - tell me if this worked

nope not working. It's weird. The file name ends with the extension .ipsw yet the file itself reads as a WinRAR ZIP archive file.

...I don't get it.

EDIT: I think I may have found a solution, if this works I'll post what it is here.

I just checked the file, it's working. Try downloading it with firefox/opera/internet explorer

you can only change the file type if you show the extensions by going into My Computer or Windows Explorer and choose Tools|Folder Options. In the View tab, remove the checkmark next to Hide extensions for known file types

Yep, solution found, DO NOT USE SAFARI TO DOWNLOAD THE FILE!

I don't know why but Safari screws with the file extensions. Used Internet Explorer and it now works, thanks for the help.
