If you want to jailbreak your iPod Touch/2G with firmware 3.0 please look here.
Only firmware 2.2.1 on WINDOWS XP/VISTA with QuickFreedom - you can use this Guide to downgrade from 3.0, too!
I don't know anything about the new 3.0 beta release/compatibility with Quickfreedom, if i know more, i'll update this thread/make a new guide.

STEP 1 - DOWNLOADS_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _

- Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable click.
- .NET Framework, version 3.5 with SP1 here click.
- Microsoft Visual C++ click.
- QuickFreedom click.

Downloaded? Install the Windows Installer, then .Net Framework(if you haven't already the newest), MS Visual C++, then reboot your computer and install QuickFreedom.
Note: Make sure you install everything with administrator rights!

STEP 2_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _

Note: If you want the iPod settings like before just make a backup in iTunes before jailbreaking, you can choose it after that in iTunes to restore from. (This does NOT back up your music or apps, it just back-ups the configurations etc., if you haven't the music/apps/etc. in your library this will NOT restore them!)
- Open QuickFreedom, make sure you have the newest Version.
- Click on "Jailbreak iPod"
- If you haven't LIBUSB installed, click on "Install LIBUSB"
Using Vista, you must install it in compatibility mode for XP SP2 and have to reboot after installing LIBUSB
- You have no firmware selected? Now we need the original firmware, click on "Browse...", now choose your (HardDisk, on which you've installed iTunes mostly it's C:\ Documents and Settings \ YOURUSERNAME \ Applications (or Application Support) \ Apple Computer \ iTunes \ iPod Software Updates, and choose the file in this folder.
If there is no file in the folder, you have to download it here click.
- If selected the firmware successful, click on "Next"

STEP 3_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _

Now you see "[x] Install Installer" & "[ ] Use Custom Boot Logo" & "Change..."
Its your choice what you want to install.
You can select one of the given BootLogos or choose an own made. But you have to pay attention by doing it yourself.

BOOT LOGO:
1. Maximum file size is 100kb
2. Maximum resolution is 320 x 480 pixels
3. You need 1 alpha-pixel (wherever on the picture, it'll look like black), else the boot logo won't show up!
To create an own boot logo you can use programs like Photoshop, Gimp, Paint etc.

- Click create firmware & let the process finish (May take up to 10 minutes)
Error? Hanging up at 1%? Check the boot logo!
No chance creating custom firmware? Run Quickfreedom as administrator. You can also download it by clicking the image below.

You need to download all 3 files in the link, to open it use WinRAR (open the .part1-file and extract the firmware to your desktop (drag&drop)! PASSWORD: pwndaipod

STEP 4_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _

- Connect your iPod
- Put your iPod into DFU-Mode (check out "DFU Instructions").
Note: In DFU Mode you MUST have a white screen! Else its in recovery mode and you have to retry the DFU part!
- If your iPod is in DFU Mode release all buttons, click 'Start PreJailbreak' & w8 until it's finished
- Open iTunes & w8 until you get the message that there has been found an iPod in recovery mode - click OK
Click restore while holding shift, browse to your desktop, choose "Custom firmware.ipsw"
Let iTunes restore your iPod
Gratulation, your iPod is jailbroken!
Note: For all who have still issues, please take a look into the quickfreedom.com FAQ click.

FAQ_ _ _ _ _

How to see that the iPod is in DFU?
QuickFreedom is telling you that it found an iPod in DFU mode & the display of your iPod is completely white, it will turn black while the restoring process in iTunes

Is Jailbreaking illegal?
Jailbreaking isn't illegal afaik. But you'll loose your warranty if Apple finds out that you've jailbroken it (Like if you run into their shop and shout "I HAV JAILBRUKN MAY ***WD!!!!"). They won't find it out through iTunes, they aren't allowed to check it. If you need to use the warranty, please restore your iPod to the original (NOT CUSTOM) firmware before going to an Apple Store.

When creating custom firmware i get an error, what can i do?
Vista -> right click -> run as administrator.
XP -> Login as administrator.
Doesn't work? Click on the button for downloading the finished custom firmware.

Jailbreak went fine but now my USB ports wont read anything but my ipod!
Please uninstall LIBUSB, you have to install it as administrator to run it correctly! And you need the newest version click

Can i jailbreak/restore my iPod without losing my files?

Get DiskAid click (Windows), go to MediaFolder -> iTunes -> Music and copy the folder to your hard-disk by drag&drop, that way you'll have every music file on your pc. But 1 bad thing is there, the files aren't sorted or named like the originals (But you can still see the title if you play them on a music player).
About apps i'm not sure, there is an applications folder in Root Folder, copy it on your hard-disk by drag&drop and then back again after restoring it.

What do i do with the three custom firmwares?
This is 1 Firmware in 3 splitted archives, just to make it possible to up-/download it. Get all 3 files into the same folder and open part1, then just drag&drop the custom firmware out of it and it'll be extracted. After that you can delete the three '.part' files

What happens if i click restore in itunes without holding shift?
iTunes will restore the iPod to the original firmware, your iPod won't be jailbroken, only restored

It does say the custom firmware is corrupted
Try to extract the firmware again, if that doesn't help redownload the files

Will I be able to boot up the iPod on its own?
Yes you will, QuickFreedom is an "Untethered Jailbreak", this means it can boot up by itself and is not "lined to computer"

What is Cydia?
It's an app for downloading files etc., you need to add more sources if you can't find an app

What is Winterboard?
It's an app, for themes, sounds and some preferences. Don't miss to download it!

Will I lose everything when i restore my iPod?
Everything that you downloaded through iTunes like apps, imported music will be back if you synch it with your iPod.
Also settings like notes, or game-savings will be back if iTunes made a backup of your iPod.

Can I restore on another computer and still recover my applications on my original computer?
Sure, there should be no problem with it, you can tell iTunes after connecting to configure it as the old iPod, everything will be back after synchronizing.

I want to synchronize my iPod with another iTunes library/another computer, what will happen if i do that?
Synchronizing with another iTunes library will cause that all apps/music will be gone.
Cydia and downloads you did through it won't be removed.

Can I restore on another computer and still recover my applications on my original computer? I need them, since I paid for a couple of them, but I can't restore on that computer. PLEASE answer as soon as you can. I really need someone's help with this, because I won't waste a second with restoring on another computer if it means I can still get my apps.

no, you should backup your settings if you don't want to have to enter them all again after the jailbreak. you don't need to restore first as the jailbreak process creates a custom firmware and then you use itunes to "restore" that image to your ipod. after that, restore your settings and you are all set to go.

Yes. Your apps are tied to your itunes account, not a particular computer. after you jailbreak, just sync your ipod with itunes while logged into your itunes account.

NO, the screen should be COMPLETELY BLACK. The screen will turn white for a moment during the pre-jailbreak...
otherwise this is a bretty accurate tutorial. could some mod make it sticky, that will avoid alot of repeated questions.
