I never upgraded from 2.2.1 due to jailbreak and other issues, but I'm sick of the old firmware and would like to try using redsnow having it point to 3.0. I downloaded the 3.0 and 3.0.1 files in zip form but when unzipping they don't seem to be in *.ipsw file form. I would like to move them to the folder where iTunes and redsnow can find them as a *.ipsw but they don't unzip as such. What do I do? Thanks!

I just realized by reading the front page that this shouldn't download as a zip file at all. IE8 does the same thing as Safari. I'll try usiing Firefox and see if it shows up properly.

OK Firefox downloaded them correctly. So should I move them to the iPhone update software folder or can I keep them in any folder and try to get iTunes to locate the restore? I did read that I may need to be offline so iTunes doesn't try to restore using the newest firmware.

I really would like some guidance, please. Thanks!

I'm trying for the last time. Can someone who knows PLEASE respond? I just need to know where I can place the *ipsw files so iTunes will see them and use them for the restore. I'm thinking the best place would be in the iPhone update Software folder, but if I can leave them in another folder and still have iTunes find them, please let me know.

Thanks!

I give up due to lack of response. I'll figure it out myself. Mods go ahead and delete the thread.

Update: I found the answer in the Mac Rumor forums, press shift while pressing restore to get "option restore", then search for the restore file you want. I hope this helps someone else when they come here asking for help on this. It would have been nice if soemone had had the courtesy to respond here.
