I'm 18 and have an iPhone, but:
-I worked for the money to buy my first-gen 8GB iPhone off eBay.
-Above is the main reason for why I have true appreciation for my iPhone.
(Of course, this laptop was a gift from my Dad for college entry, but there's no reason why I wouldn't appreciate it either. I'd never wanna be without this laptop.)
    -I'm a Rogers pay-as-you-go customer.
-I'm a bit more tech-savvy than the majority of my friends who have iPhones, and hence, I mod the hell out of the thing, and love it. (I'm good at figuring out workarounds to make it do what I want. I'll explain later.)
-I feel that using the iPhone is the closest thing I have to having a computer in my pocket, without actually having a computer in my pocket.
-I'm 100% in control of my cell phone, and my cellphone terms. (I wouldn't say "plan", since it's prepaid.")

A few of my friends who bought their iPhones themselves also have the first-gen. One has a 3G but he pays for his own plan. He kinda makes a living importing, and then reselling phones.

Anyhow, I totally understand what you mean. And to answer your question, it's because their parents are rich. I know they may feel proud, bragging to their friends that their parents bought them the 3G-S (which, I know they definitely will) but I still feel more pride from saying that I have a first-gen iPhone that I bought myself. I'd most likely have more pride too, if I end up buying a 3G-S myself, too.
I mean, it's not all about what you have. It's also about how you got it.

To them though, it's a just a phone. I don't see the iPhone as being just a phone. The whole point to jailbreaking is to unlock the true hidden potential of the iPhone, and also to open up an endless ability for customization. One of my friends who used to have an iPhone sold it off and got a Storm or something. I asked him why he sold it off, and he said he was just bored of it. I asked him if he had ever jailbroken it, and he said he hadn't. In all honesty, I wasn't surprised.

Of course, it also voids your warranty and whatnot, but the benefits outweigh the risks. I've had my first-gen for almost a year, with no problems. But I'm rather tired of the fancy new phones being dangled around, just screaming for users to sign up for, in order to get them. I don't jailbreak just because I have to so I can unlock and use my iPhone on Rogers, I jailbreak because it allows me to fully express who I truly am. I mean, you carry your phone around with you, mostly all day, right? Why not extend your personality to it? I'd rather have a phone that screams "ME!" than one that screams "3-Year Contract!". Even if I did have the latest iPhone on a 3-year, I'd still jailbreak.

I know that blatantly drifted off-topic, but long story short, the majority of spoiled rich kids who had the latest iPhones bought for them by their rich parents honestly don't seem to know jack about them, or what they can truly do.

I think that's his point, kids getting these phones free from parents = spoiled

My kids will probably get our older iphones when we upgrade, all I have to do is swap sims for them

the value on 2g phones has been dropping like a rock on craigslist too

Everyone and their mom can jailbreak an iPhone and mod it. So pretty much what you're saying is that you can use the "google machine" better than most of your friends? Because all in all, it's what you do.

LOL, I remember when 1.1.2 came out, the same day I had my friends phone jailbroken, and he accidentally upgrade =D, spending afew hours and a six bpack of beer trying getting it to downgrade. Fun times, when jailbreaking wasn't so easy.
