Why not buy a cheap AT&T GO phone (they come with a sim)? Activate GO phone with new sim, then use new sim in iPhone. Then you'll have a valid sim which should enable you to do as you please with your iPhone. Of course the iPhone would now be using the GO phone's telephone #, but at least it would operate.
