Use your iPhone with Verizon

It comes to no surprise that many of our readers here don’t like AT&T and would rather prefer to use their iPhone on Verizon. Unfortunately Verizon operates on a CDMA network, so the iPhone needs to have a CDMA chip to work on Verizon. There would need to be a new iPhone, the iPhone 4G for this to happen. While this may not be happening any time soon, you can still use your iPhone with Verizon if you want by following the steps below.

How to get a “Verizon iPhone”

The goal of this tutorial is to get your iPhone to work on the Verizon Wireless network. Thankfully, you can do this because iPhone supports WiFi. Verizon offers a product called the MiFi (link here), which is basically a device that serves as a hotspot and allows you to connect up to 5 WiFi-enabled devices to Verizon’s network. You will only get Internet access on your iPhone if you use this, but you won’t get any phone service because the iPhone doesn’t have a CDMA chip! The good news about this is that you can still download VoIP apps like Skype, and use your iPhone like a phone on Verizon’s MiFi service. Plans for the MiFi start at $39.99/mo. so this is definitely a cheaper alternative to AT&T if you don’t use your iPhone as a phone much but need Internet access on-the-go.

Get the MiFi from here.
Connect to your MiFi, just like you would with any WiFi hotspot. You can do this by go to Settings -> WiFi and selecting your MiFi network.
If you want to phone, download a VoIP app from the App Store, like Skype.

iPhone 3.1.3 05.12.01 baseband unlock imminent, Sherif Hashim discovers exploit

Just a week after Apple released the iPhone 3.1.3 update, Sherif Hashim has discovered an exploit that could allow iPhone users to unlock their iPhone on the iPhone 3.1.3 firmware on baseband 05.12.01 and use it with other carriers like T-Mobile in the US, for example. We get these a lot, but no the iPhone can’t be unlocked to work with Verizon because Verizon operates on a CDMA network. Apple always updates the baseband with each update, causing many iPhone users to loose their unlock so this is good news for the iPhone users that had their baseband updated and lost their unlock.

For now, download iPhone toolbar (works on Windows/Mac on Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer browser) and you’ll receive an alert once the unlock is released, and instructions on how to install it.

The exploit Sherif Hashim uses has not been revealed yet, but iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd has confirmed that it works. The iPhone Dev Team will most likely wait for Apple to release the next generation iPhone 4G before releasing this unlock so that Apple does not patch the exploit before then. For now, all iPhone users that are unlocked/jailbroken are advised to be extremely cautious of future firmware updates and avoid updating before the jailbreak tools are updated.

iPhone Devs: Android in app description = BANHAMMER

When it comes to iPhone apps, Apple is infamous for rejecting them for silly reasons. Once a developer’s application gets rejected, it can take a very long time until it’s approved again. Surprisingly, this time Apple acted differently. The developer of the Flash of Genius iPhone application put “Finalist in Google’s Android Developer’s Challenge!” in his app description and that triggered Apple to e-mail him and ask him to remove the Android reference or face the consequences of having the app removed from the App Store.

In it’s defense Apple told the developer that the application contains irrelevant information, and placing references to other platforms in the App description is not allowed. Instead of removing the application directly, Apple kindly e-mailed it’s developer and told him to remove the reference otherwise his app will . Kudos to Apple for doing that! iPhone users are downloading the iPhone app, which is a different platform than the Android so it was misleading of the developer of the Flash of Genius app to include this in there. The developer of the Flash of Genius app was patient and he complied with Apple and removed the reference to Android. Other iPhone developers take note!

Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3 untethered

The iPhone 3.1.3 update that Apple released today caused people who updated to it to loose their jailbreak. My jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3 post has instructions on how users can jailbreak their device with older jailbreak software. The jailbreak did not work for any iPod touch device, but you can prepare for it by following the instrutions below.

If you want to just jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3, download iPhone userbar and you will receive an alert once the jailbreak is out. The user bar also has download links for the following firmware, so I recommend you download your firmware in advance so you can use it when you jailbreak.

Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.3: Untethered vs tethered

An tethered jailbreak means your iPod touch will need to go through a jailbreak process again if you restart it, and untethered means that you won’t have to jailbreak every time you restart because the jailbreak is permanent. The tethered jailbreaks started coming when Apple patched an exploit that allowed an untethered jailbreak.

Apple released an iPhone 3.1.3 update that caused people who updated to it to loose their jailbreak. The iPhone 3.1.3 update that Apple released today required users of jailbroken iPhones or iPod Touches to wait for a new jailbreak software to be released before updating. This jailbreak is for 3.1.2 but may work for iPhone 3G 3.1.3, iPhone 3GS 3.1.3, or iPhone first generation.

If you want to just jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 you can try the old jailbreak and see if it works, if not then you will need to just download iPhone userbar and you will receive an alert once the jailbreak is out.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 with blackra1n

1. Download blackra1n

2. Click the make it ra1n button.

3. Your iPhone or iPod Touch will reboot once blackra1n is done doing it’s thing and you should see the blackra1n icon on there. If you don’t see the blackra1n icon, go to the last page on your iDevice and you should see it.

4. Install your preferred application from the blackra1n app. You have the option of choosing Cydia, Icy, or Rock. I don’t recommend you to install them all at once, because that may cause problems. Install them one at a time.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 with PwnageTool

1. Download PwnageTool 3.1.4 (only works with Mac!)

2. You will be creating a custom IPSW and then restoring it through iTunes. If you don’t know how to do that, read my jailbreak iPhone 3.1 with PwnageTool post which gives step by step instructions.

Jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.1.3

Today the iPhone 3.1.3 update was released to iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch usres. This update includes mainly bug fixes. If you would like to jailbreak or unlock your device, you must read this. If you have an unlocked iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS do not update to this new firmware, updating to the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware will permanently update your baseband. The newer baseband does not support software unlocking.

The jailbreak has not been released yet, but you if you’ve got too much time on your hands you may be able to jailbreak if you try the following. If this works please share your results in the comments.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3

1. Update to iPhone 3.1.3. After updating, find your iPhone 3.1.3 IPSW file or download it using any of the links below. Remember, don’t use Safari to download. Safari can’t download .IPSW files properly, use a different browser!
If you are having trouble downloading the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware through the iTunes Application then you can directly download the appropriate firmware for your device by downloading iPhone userbar and clicking Downloads button and then downloading the appropriate firmware:

Unlock iPhone 3.1.3

It’s possible to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 but only if your baseband has not been updated to 05.11.07 or the newer baseband, you must create a custom firmware that uses the 04.26.08 baseband. The iPhone 3.1.3 update updates the baseband to a newer one that permanently blocks the software unlock. A guide on how to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 will be up once a jailbreak tool is released.

For now, follow downlolad iPhone toolbar and you’ll receive an alert once it’s released.

iPhone 3.1.3: iTunes Update

It’s been at least 3 months since iPhone users have been using the iPhone 3.1.2 update. Today Apple has released the iPhone 3.1.3 update for iPhone and iPod Touch users. This update does not really add anything new, but it does fix important bugs so iPhone and iPod Touch users should update.

The iPhone 3.1.3 software update includes the following:

Reports battery level on iPhone 3GS with an improved accuracy
Fixes issues that caused third party iPhone apps to crash
Resolves a bug that caused an iPhone app to crash when the Japanese Kana keyboard is being used
using the Japanese Kana keyboard

How to update to iPhone 3.1.3

1. Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your PC.

2. Launch the iTunes application and click the Check for updates button.

3. iTunes will show you the above window saying: “iTunes will update your iPhone to iPhone 3.1.3 software and will verify the update with Apple“. Click on the Update button.

4. An iPhone OS 3.1.3 software update window will show up, click on the Next button. Read and and accept the license agreement. Once you’ve done that your download will start.

5. The file size of this update varies depending on which device you’re updating. Once the iPhone 3.1.3 firmware update is done downloading it will start the installation process on your iPhone.

iPad your iPhone or iPod touch

1. Install iPad theme

Open Cydia and search for Simple iPad theme, and install it.

2. Activate the iPad theme

Open WinterBoard and tap on the Simple iPad theme to activate it, and then exit WinterBoard.

3. Download Classics iPhone app

The iPad has a new App Store for just eBooks called iBooks, but there is a similar app in the App Store called Classics which is very similar. Click here to download the currently free Classics app for your iPhone or iPod touch.
