    • ]]>     Nook teardown
    The nookDevs team recently did a teardown of the Barnes & Noble nook, and that teardown lead them to something exciting: a rooted nook. In simple terms rooted means they were able to gain full access to the filesystem on the nook. This should allow nook users to run more apps and customize the nook the way they want it. The nook is powered by Google’s Android operating system on firmware 1.5. Unfortunately rooting the nook requires you to open up the nook, take out the microSD card, and follow this tutorial. It’s certainly not easy for an average user right now, but I’m sure the nookDevs team or someone else will be able to come up with a more automated way to do it in the future.

    Besides the root access, more specs of the nook were also revealed. Here are the specs:

    • Samsung S3C6410 Processor
    • Synaptics TM169 Touchscreen controller
    • Internal 2GB Sandisk microSD card for internal storage
    • 3 partitions
      • sdb1: system: ext3 250 MB
      • sdb2: update? ext3 150 MB
      • sdb3: internal memory: ext3 1309 MB
    • Sierra Wireless MC8777V wireless modemin data only mode
