iPhone OS 4.0 Event: iAd

During the iPhone OS 4.0 event today, Steve Jobs revealed the multitasking ability for the iPhone. He also announced its integrated mobile advertising platform. The mobile advertising platform, iAd’s will function in selling and hosting ads. According to Jobs, the ads will give 60% of ad revenue back to the developers. In the event, Jobs displayed a demo for the Toy Story 3 ad which was similar to a native ad with a game integrated look, fully interactive.
Jobs stated that, “This is a new kind of mobile ad. Have you ever seen a mobile ad like this? Anything even close?”

Another ad shown by Jobs was an ad for Nike displaying a history of Nike ads and allowing users to switch through a history of the brand’s shoes. The ads for this platform will have access to using location services and the accelerometer. This is surely a new addition to the advertising style with the technique and platform provided by Steve Jobs.

iPad jailbreak: Update

After a day of its release, the Apple iPad has already been jailbroken. MuscleNerd, member of iPhone Dev-Team revealed to us that he has already jailbroken the iPad. Expect an iPad jailbreak very soon.

The iPad can currently run on an SSH server. The jailbreak consists of a variation of the same ‘spirit’ jailbreak which was recently used to de-restrict iPhone 3.1.3. It is evident that the 3.2 firmware still has a number of security holes that have let the iPhone Dev-Team to jailbreak it using the iPhone 2.1.2 hack. This jailbreak is sounds similar to the earlier technique which uses a browser-based exploit to get root access and let unsigned applications running on the tablet. Right now, we are not sure if this could be made into an automated process for regular readers.

iPad for Businesses

The demand for iPads have clearly been high and greater than expected for businesses. There are many companies and employers which are buying the Apple tablet in order to use it for communication and mobile productivity in the workplace. Jim Turner from Hiltop Consultants is a provider of IT services to law firms and companies in D.C. Turner recently bought 15 iPads which he will be using for checking e-mail, taking notes, and setting up client computer systems.

The iPad which includes games, entertainment, video player, digital book reader, and etc. is not just for fun and games. In fact, many companies and employees are buying this technology for business-related communications and keeping their employees productive while they are on-the-go. According to Charlie Wolf, an analyst at Needham & Co, the iPad plays a vital role in the business market. He states that “The demand appears to be far more diverse than I originally expected.”

In a survey conducted by Zogby international, more than half mobile users preferred to use a tablet device such as the iPad for working outside the office according to Sybase a mobile software maker. Apple’s chief Executive, Steve Jobs and officials in the company have not of now ruled out the prospect customers would use for business relations. Although, Apple has also created an iPad version of its iWork suite with productivity applications including: Pages, a word processing program; Numbers, a spreadsheet program; and Keynote, a presentation application which is similar to PowerPoint.

Kindle for iPad vs. Standard Kindle

Which do you prefer? With the Kindle for iPad which is now available to download, it seems that the Amazon Kindle is now long gone. That light screened e-book reading device now seems like an ancient predecessor-even if it does read better in the sunlight. The iPad, with newer technology holds various tasking abilities than just the Kindle alone. Looking at its dull screen, it is clearly evident that it won’t be long before those standard Kindles are lost in history. Although it is fact that the standard Kindle is cheaper, the iPad has various tasking abilities, internet browsing, entertainment, and other advantageous abilities.

Being the more advanced technology yet, the iPad is what’s in store now. The Kindle for the iPad features Whispersync to keep your books, bookmarks, and notes in sync between the use of devices. The application, iBooks- as it is called also takes the slick page turn effect and changing of background color, and screen brightness. The screen brightness effect is the most useful for eBook readers as it allows adjustment when reading text- some like darker contrast or even lighter.

Furthermore, when buying books on the Kindle for the iPad, one is completely excludes Apple from the process. The Kindle of Apple allows one to buy a book from the Kindle store in a web browser within the application in order to make your purchase. And therefore, there is no cut for apple. Moreover, in the Kindle for iPad there are two official book stores one can purchase through.

White House accessible iPad

As blogged by the White House new media team, their website (whitehouse.gov) is ready for the launch of the iPad. While a large group of us have already received our iPad’s, it has been confirmed that whitehouse.gov will be one of the handful of websites that are fully accessible via the iPad. According to the blog, viewers will be able to watch live and on-demand videos from their iPads on whitehouse.gov. Dave Cole, director from the White House new media wrote in his blog post that mobile.whitehouse.gov allows users to use any mobile device to access the site. While previously users were only able to access the site with the iphone app. Cole also wrote that “The program is just the latest in our effort to make our content available on a broad number of platforms as technology changes how – and where – people get their information.” The White House new media team is looking further into developing mobile applications for various other devices – mobile platforms.

No Microsoft for iPad?

Apparently, Microsoft does not have any further plan on creating a version of Office suite programs to run on Apple’s iPad, as stated by Stephen Elop the president of Microsoft’s business division. According to Elop, the company is investing further through a ‘wait-and-see’ approach in deciding whether or not it would look towards tailoring software for the iPad, releasing today. Stephen also included that Google has not yet made any development against Microsoft in the business software market either. In an interview recently, Elop stated, “We haven’t heard anything about Google making inroads against Office, because they’re not.”

Microsoft is selling the dubbed Office 2010 version of their product on May 12^th which is a version designed for businesses. Later on it seems that the company will be introducing stripped-down versions of World and the spreadsheet program, Excel accessible free over the Web. The company is less interested in Google or any other competitor discussion, rather they are concerned about moving to new ‘cloud-based’ versions of Microsoft software. Elop said, “We never say never, but we have no current plans” to develop a version of Office for the Apple iPad”. However, it is likely that an iPad edition of Office will be built by a unit within Microsoft’s consumer bsuienss that creates versions of Office that work with Apple’s Macintosh personal computers.

Developers: iPad Apps will Cost More

The iPad will be going on sale this Saturday April 3rd to the U.S. Developers have said that the iPad applications are to cost more than the ones for the iPhone or the iPod touch. This is due to the extra work involved in designing the iPad. According the developer Igor Pusenjak, it has been explained that developers are testing the “waters on pricing”. Pusenjak also stated that “For a lot of us it is an early experiment to see how people will react but I wouldn’t be surprised to see prices go down to 99 cents really early as happened on the iPhone.”. The developer has also created the iPhone game many of us know as bubble wrap. In fact, he has even sold 3m units at 99cents on the iPhone/iPod touch and furthermore, plans on pricing it at $1.99 on the iPad.

According to Jeff Scott, the founder of the review site 148apps.com, the pricing on the iPad’s is thought to be “really crucial and developers are looking at this as a more expensive device with a wider screen and that means the apps have to be more feature rich” as stated by Jeff. While we are aware that the iPad is larger than both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, it would seem to be the opposite way around for iPad users since they are buying a larger and more expensive device for more the money. The cost for designing an app ranges from $200 -$20,000 depending on various factors, features and functionality.

Elan v. Apple Battle: Elan looks to Ban Apple Multitouch Products

Recent news is out that Elan Microelectronics has filed a suit against Apple with US International Trade Commission in regards to Apple’s products violating a multitouch patent awarded to the Taiwanese company. Last year in April Elan also filed a related suite with US District Court in Northern California over the same patent No. 7,274,353 which references “a fundamental patent to the detection of multi-fingers that allows for any subsequent multi-finger applications to be implemented.”

To many this may seem ridiculous, but Elan is also filling a patent infringement suit where it seeks to blocking Apple products importing to the U.S. using the multitouch function. This includes the iPhone, iPod touch, Macbook, and even the iPad which is set to release on April 3^rd. Many of us are probably hoping that this does not interfere with the issuance of our pre-ordered iPads coming forth this weekend. Since Apple products are being assembled outside of the U.S.; Elan is imposing a threat to the company from trying to stop such products from reaching America’s shores. It is also said that Apple is using the same strategy in to getting to block HTC from importing phones that Cupertino alleges violate its patents. Let’s all hope that this Elan v. Apple case is not successful for Elan Microelectronics. What are your thoughts?

Free iPad from Seton Hill University

Free iPad’s for students in Seton Hill University!? Well, it’s quite true. Actually according to Seton Hill University, every full time student will be receiving iPads as part of their Technology Advantage Program. Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania recently announced that in Fall of 2010 every full-time student will be receiving an iPad. Dirk, a TUAW reader stated that “Students will be able to download their textbooks to their iPads from the iBook Store. In addition, iPads can be used as phones and for air and file sharing, as well as note-taking.”

That’s not all, in fall the undergraduate students will also receive 13’’ MacBook’s for use as well. Furthermore, it is also known that Mac users will also receive repairs on equipment from their IT department and loaner laptops will also be given when a students own MacBook is gone for repair. Seems as if Seton Hill University can’t have enough of Apple products for their students! This may be incentive enough for many to transfer to Seton Hill soon enough.
