Nikkei reports that the survey was conducted in 2,400 stores nationwide. The Nexus 7 accounted for 44.4% of the tablet sales, while the iPad accounted for 40.1%.
Unsurprisingly, Nikkei says that one of the main reasons that the Nexus 7 is outselling the iPad is the price. The Nexus 7 costs 19,800 yen ($221) while the iPad starts at 28,800 yen ($319) for the iPad mini.
Nikkei also mentioned market research firm IDC's estimates that the total number of tablets sold in Japan for the full year were around 3.6 million with an estimated growth to 4.9 million in 2013.
