I run Bulldog and have similar problems to the ones above 46525 files, did a virus scan where 4500 files were repared then rebooted now system wont start.
Manual Scan
According the Bitdefender 2010 (Manual), 10% of my file \Windows folder is infected with trojan.fakealert.5.
Tried to disinfect does not work. During Disinfection Bitdefender using Manual Scan, the program crashes.
Boot up
Windows 7 machine does boot up properly but Bitdefender finds that it self is corrupted/or missing. Says “issues.dll” file is missing.
The error window says: bdagent.exe System error. The program can’t start becuase issues.dll os missing from your computer. Try reinstalling tje program to fix this problem.
So no way out…
Had this happen to me this morning, moved a bunch of files to quarantine. Then the computer wouldn’t start. Luckily I have windows 7 which automatically repaired the system after 3 tries. Everything works now :)
MY SYSTEM JUST RECOVERED ITSELF AFTER 5 ATTEMPTS! I had done a system restore which stoppped Windows from starting at all repeated startup repairs failed but finally after running it from a command line my system recovered. If you have a good restore point, you should eventually be able to recover.
Wasted whole day sorting out this problem. Definitely going to switch to another viruschecker.
The program is crappy anyway and always crashing.
Over 60000 people have viewed the thread discussing the problem on this forum:

I just reinstalled windows twice due to this and wasted half a day- completely unacceptable. I would be using PC Tools anyway but this is one of the few that works for 64 bit windows
this is terrible i trusted bitdefender to keep my computer safe and now i’m regretting it. i need my computer for work and now it is unusable if anyone knows how to fix it please let me know.
Oh my…. oh MY!!! I have spent the whole day, re-installing my OS because of this false-positive fake trojan! My girlfriend and I broke up, and all in all its been a crap day. Thanks to Bit Defender – piece of sh*yte software.
I left her in my room to check email and surf the web for 20 minutes and came back to find the mother of all hell sh*yte storms breaking loose on my PC. Nothing would work. Couldn’t backup or save any of the data on my OS partition. Naturally I blamed her lack on incompetence in browsing the web. After tears (hers) and loads of fighting I was left to salvage what was left of my PC and spend the next 7 hours attempting to fix the problem. This problem wasn’t even posted on their webiste as a news item. Needless to say, Kaspersky saved the day. Next renewal, I’m tea-bagging Bit Defender.
Nic – almost had same fight with best friend. Yow. Too bad. So. How exactly did Kaspersky save the day? Did it detect and fix all the false positives?? help? email pmdwyer@earthlink.net ?
Yep, got it too. After four files seemed to be infected I got suspicious and turned of the Virusguard. That solved the problem for now, but I had to reinstall Chrome.

Although it’s fustrating when stuff like this happens, it’s good not to panick which is what most people did then overreact. I was infected too but never rebooted like some did, waited about an hour, read the forums then “presto’ all is good. I’ve had issues with pc tools, Mcafee, norton and countless others which I no longer use and BD by far is the best I’ve encountered.
I feel like such a dumbass, just spent 5 hours attempting to system restore thinking I had an infect SVChost.exe. Will still use Bitdefender because it does do a lot of stuff and pick up a lot of viruses, that will change if this ever happens again though.
Hi,
Of course I’ve been attack be that virus… I wonder what to do… because a lot of program were damage so I think I’ll reinstall the Bitdefender but I won’t do the update…. Hope it will work…
I’ll be back with info if it’s working…

Hi guys! I’m writing on behalf of BitDefender just to apologize for this situation. We understand your frustration and we are surely working on a fix for this, trying to create a patch that will restore BitDefender update files and retrieve the correct signatures. You should be able to restore the quarantined files after installing the patch. The patch will be available shortly either on the forum topic: http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=18789 or on this support KB article http://www.bitdefender.com/site/KnowledgeBase/consumer/#638
Thank you very much for your understanding, we will keep you updated.
Ok, so it is very annoying. But I have used bit defender for two years as Mc Afff! became useless. I have never had a real virus problem only this fake one. Three computers running 24/24. I am using a trial version of another antivirus for a few days untill Bit Defender cleans things up. I have backups of everything so other than being somewhat annoyed and spending a couple of hours restoring no damage has been done. I intend to stay with them, after all no one is perfect and they have protected my systems from all real viruses!
Raluca – On behalf of all your customers it would be nice if BD would actually provide us with updates rather than deciding 5-6 hours after the fact to release a statement stating what we already know and then not give us any updates afterwards leaving us sitting here wondering just how screwed we are. You obviously don’t really understand our frustration.
A mass e-mail to our registered address letting us know that they dropped the ball and to wait a bit before re-installing windows would have been a nice touch as well…
Raluca, all very well and good. However, I don’t have a Vista install disk. I am not even sure it was provided to me with this Toshiba. I can’t fill out the form on BitDefender web site because I can’t get to info on my license key. So now what do you suggest to solve this problem that BitDefender has created for me?
Hey i just got the same problem (Trojan fake alert 5)
I had to reinstall both my desktop and laptop because it messed up my pc,Both running on windows 7 64 Bit, souloution for non affected pcs put AVG free on until Bitdefender is fixed. So that Bit defender can not affect anymore pcs,And your protected ;)
Until the fix is out.
Here is how to fix the Trojan.fakealert.5 problem
1. Click on your antivirus in safe mode and then turn it off.
2.Then go to Quarantine Division and restore your files.
3.Then go back in your computers time about 2 days the com will now restart and now your computer should work. :)
I forgot to say now delete your com and install another
Not com antivirus
Utter bullshit. I had to rollback my computer a few weeks to fix this bullcrap. I’m considering switching to another program.
Bit Defender Internet security 2010 , Win 7 x64
Had to reinstall windows ‘cuz it didn’t reboot, no way I’m keeping my bit defender account, so shame they didn’t test before update…
Had this crop up 24 hours ago now and finally see some (small) instruction on the website… Not quick enough or public enough tho. Odd forum comments while the world of your pc falls apart, but nothing helpful when you are trying to follow and 18 page thread. Small article now on site is ideal, but should have been something there hours ago as soon as it was obvious (from the number of queries like mine) that there was an massive issue.
I bought the mrs a laptop for xmas. and replaced the trial antivirus with bit defender yesterday (after reading numerous good reviews) for a hassle free solution that didn’t need manual intervention on every issue spotted. I put in the licence key literally as all this kicked off. Now almost every working program on the laptop is quarantined – as we ran anything it died. My little Bill was watching captain pugwash on youtube when moving to new episode killed the sound. then killed ie8 then killed anything you started, then killed windows system files. Cunningly, and attempt to use windows help disabled any assistance you might be able to get, and by now IE was dead so couldn’t research the problem. Guessed it was a dud, and some research on my own desktop pointed to that, but couldn’t disable the software as it had quarantined itself and would not start.
Absolute genius I have to say. Ever thought of trying to have a go at the pentagon systems – it’d crumble under an assault like this…
Laptop is currently sat next to me and I am wondering how much of Sunday, on my kids 1st birthday party will be spent trying to sort this out rather than chat with various aunts and uncles over some cold beer and a warm sausage roll. Thanks for that…
Am just hoping some of the windows 7 recovery praise proves (from the forum) to be true and we have an easy exit (never thought I’d be thanking BG in public but fingers crossed.
Stuff happens, but the lack of response on the site quickly has cost me dear – next time post a warning immediately and advise disabling. I would have a few thousand less quarantined files to try and deal with had you bothered.
In any other business, heads would roll. I’d be interested to hear whos responsible for this one and what action is taken. Oh and a couple of years free might keep me interested – failing that I’ll be asking for my money back, never to return.
Yours, a most disappointed customer of a pretty shocking 24 hours….
Neil, Xyan We sincerely understand your frustration and we have the certainty that a patch will be released ih the next 30 minutes. I will keep you updated and even though we know the damage is done, we are considering BitDefender compensation for those of you affected by the issue.
