iPhone 4G should launch on Sprint and Verizon

Although it has not been confirmed yet, we know that Apple is planning on releasing the iPhone 4G this summer. Every year Apple has been releasing a new iPhone and adding new features. It is rumored that the iPhone 4G will have the following:
- iPhone OS 4.0 software
- Multi-tasking
- A 5.0 megapixel camera
- A camera on the front for video chat
Apple is very secretive about new products so we don’t know what they have in store for us until June. Apple had an exclusive contract with AT&T when they launched the iPhone, and many believe that the contract has ended but we don’t know if Apple has renewed it. If Apple didn’t renew their exclusivity contract with AT&T, then this means they can offer the upcoming iPhone 4G on other carriers like Verizon, Sprint, etc.
I would like to see Apple offer the iPhone 4G on Sprint because Sprint will be rolling out the first 4G network in June. 4G is faster than the 3G network that AT&T currently offers. I know many people would also like to see the iPhone on Verizon Wireless network, and if Apple can get that to happen then nothing, not even the HTC EVO 4G can stop it from being the top smartphone in the market.

Wow, this is just a random wish published onto a website.
Yeah I would like to see an iPhone on Verizon as well, but both Sprint and Verizon will be “launching” 4G in June, but don’t expect to have coverage of the US until the end of 2010 at the earliest, but more realiztically, they will have decent 4G cover in mid to late 2011. Don’t expect an iPhone on Verizon or Spring or 4G in 2010.
For verizon to go to a 4G network they need to get off of their CDMA standard cell towers and onto GSM cell towers (like the ones that ATT use). Just imagine how long it is gonna take Verizon to switch all of their cell towers and you know what they are going to have when they finally do switch them? The exact same cell phone call quality as ATT has with their GSM cell towers, so don’t imagine you will get Verizon CDMA call quality once they move to 4G either, its gonna be just like ATT’s once they switch, so no point in holding your breath waiting for Verizon to get the iphone anyways, it won’t work any better on their network if they ever do get it.
And don’t expect Apple to ever make a CDMA compatible version of the iPhone either, CDMA is a dying technology, everything and everybody is moving to GSM technology so there is no incentive for Apple to make a phone that won’t have any cell towers to work with it in 1.5 years.
Andy please shut your mouth!!! Learn the business then you can talk. What an idiot!!
LoLuMaD… verizon and sprint sucks and Andy is right. so just stfu and sit down. thank you very much.
Smarter than Andy, if you were reputable at all you would have left your real name at the very least. Andy is correct and this article’s title is rubbish. The last two paragraph that speculate how cool an iphone 4g would be are very true, but the title is very misleading.
Can and Will are two different things. Qualcom has already confirmed that they dropped the ball on iphones time standards for a cdma chip by Q1, this is why there was no announcement. They lost their contract and it was passed to another manufacturer. Because of this blackberry released a shareholder statement saying that they will see increased market share because of the delayed release of a cmda [or more likely at this point a 4g] iphone. It is HIGHLY unlikely that we will see one before 2011 now. The best case scenario is an unlocked iphone that can work on t-mobile.
Don’t attack him, Your the idiot here, If you read the article there is no solid-facts. This is all rumor and opinion.
i agree with andy. the iphone 4g is more likely to show up at t-mobile than it would sprint or verison. apple would not make a device that would only really be applicable in one region (this one) with a cdma phone when the rest of the world uses gsm technology. said cdma phone would be obsolete in it wouldn’t be able to make phone calls. it would be a ipad pocket tied to verizon’s network.
i can’t see this happening.
Seriously? No need for the harsh words. Besides both of you are wrong. Theres much more in store than just CDMA tech. and 4g. Its known that AT&T and verizon are working on much faster network towers than what’s currently available. Both will eventually have two techs capable of higher data rates, 20mpbs average.
You are the man Joe. Tell it like it is!
I would have to agree with Andy on this one. Everyone knows CDMA is worthless. It will be phased out sooner rather then later. One thing I have to disagree with others is the coverage of AT&T. Granted they need to extend their 3G coverage, which they are doing, and also step up to 4G, but realistically I’ve never had any issues with AT&Ts coverage and call quality. I’ve never dropped a call and I have used the phone in WA and NC. I even had no problems when driving from WA to NC. Granted in the woods there was no signal, but guarantee that nobody would have had coverage there. Now the 3G coverage is so much better in WA then NC, but that doesn’t matter much to me. I use my phone on WiFi when needed. It would be nice to be able to use it more frequently on 3G, and I’m sure a lot of others would like this too.
Once 4G gets released, it’s just gonna be the same as 3G. Everyone will complain about the coverage in their areas just like they do with 3G. Nobody will ever be satisfied. It’s just gonna be that way. Deal with it.
I really doubt they will release 2 majorly different versions of the iPhone (GSM and CDMA). They will release a GSM version only because the entire world uses that and it would only maximize their profits. It could happen, but I highly doubt it.
And Smarter Than Andy, try and come up with a more clever name and if your gonna comment on someone’s post, try and put in some actual facts or at least your inputs. Try and not make yourself look like a complete idiot
Haaa, no worries, I am not offended by comment flaming, there are always those people in threads. Very good discussion people and I am not saying I would leave ATT if Verizon ever got the iPhone, I really don’t have any call quality issues here in NJ, but I was just trying to inform others that putting an iPhone on Verizon isn’t going to be as magical as everyone thinks and if someone is thinking of getting an iPhone but is waiting for it to come out on Verizon or Sprint because it will work better on their networks, don’t bother, it will work exactly the same once Verizon and Sprint get on the ball and move the global standard GSM cell networks.
verizons 4G network is backwards compatible with CDMA, so apple could make a cdma iphone, and still have reception in 1.5 years, genius.
bvkhgv, you are incorrect regarding backwards compatibility.
Verizon Wireless is owned by Vodafone (a GSM carrier in Europe) and is being forced to go with LTE for their 4G network which is a GSM derivative technology (in other words: Verizon’s 4G network is NOT backwards compatible with CDMA).
Joe is correct again, LTE averages a stable 20mbps connection with future software compression and other upgradable enhancements that could scale the technology to a demonstrated stable 5Gbps burst data rate. Sprint decided to utilize WiMax for their 4G network (which was already an available technology that was not getting enough traction in other markets which is why Sprint was able to license the tech for cheap and start its roll out quicker than LTE, WiMax is now about 7 years old!) Even with potential performance tweaks down the road, that technology caps around 75Mbps.
It has been discussed that the FCC would like to pull the frequency allocations that first and second generations of the GSM & CDMA networks currently occupy within the next 5 years and 3g within 10, which is going to force the industry to phase out older GSM technology and technologically capped out CDMA technology.
Don’t get me wrong, CDMA does typically have better sound quality, but that has more to do with how audio is digitally sent as packets instead of raw audio similar to how VOIP technology works (only with much lower latency and general overhead).
GSM on the other hand is a very robust technology that can usually be software upgraded and requires much lower maintenance than its CDMA equivalents. I don’t say these things because I read them on some half-baked blog, instead I am extending my knowledge of the industry that I have worked in for the last 9 years as a cellular network engineer for both GSM and CDMA carriers.
The wireless communications industry would be better off deciding on a single technology that looked the most promising and focusing 100% of their R&D efforts to make the technology progress at a more stable rate. In my professional opinion that technology would be LTE as it is the grandchild of GSM which has long been the adopted standard of 95% of the world.
As far as the iPhone goes, I highly doubt that Apple would see the financial benefit in investing in a CDMA modem for their device to have yet another product to sell, it’s just not their M.O. The only way I could see Apple release the iPhone with a CDMA/WiMax radio is if somebody (like Qualcom) could put together a multi-tech modem that does it all which since such a modem would drive the cost way up and cut into Apple’s profit margin…again I don’t see that happening as again, that’s NOT their M.O.
At best we could possibly see a new GSM based iPhone with OS 4.0 which has been all but officially confirmed to add some sort of multi-tasking. Additional storage space and operating memory. Possibly use Apples own CPU similar to the one to be used in iPad. Much more than that at this time would pure speculation which should only be regarded as wishes and rumors. I prefer cold hard facts.
From what I have been able to gather, there is currently no LTE specific mobile chipsets in production that would correctly suit the mobile device market yet. LTE for not much like WiMax will be restricted to laptop cards and mobile hotspot devices until power management, stability and size can be much improved (my sources say LTE “should” start hitting mobile devices in mid 2011). Again, until I see proof, I am not going to hold my breath and wish upon a star.
Jeff you seem to be a very knowledgeable guy. How does China Mobile’s request for a CDMA iPhone factor into this? I see Apple really wanting to compete with HTC who seems to be their biggest threat right now, how do you think they could best accomplish that? I think they need 4G of some type this summer to stay in the game. I personally believe Apple sees mobile as a huge opportunity and likes to control the user experience. I speculate perhaps a buy into the wireless industry.
While I do agree that HTC is gaining some ground on Apple in the mobile arena, i doubt that Apple would make a special version of their iPhone to cater just to China CDMA standards as they are slightly different modulation and frequencies than in the United States… Plus China Mobile also runs a GSM network in parallel with their CDMA network. So again, it comes down to Apple choosing the lowest common denominator and going with GSM standard as it is available in all markets. The only way they are going to release a CDMA version is if they can get a chip manufacturer to create a hybrid radio, but unless it costs the same as a GSM only version, I doubt that they would bite as it would cut into their profit margins. One thing I have learned about Apple is that it is best not to question what they might do and just wait and see. They have an amazing ability to surprise their followers.
Ok, you really have no idea do you…cdma is not compatible with the iphone for more reasons than just the radio inside genius. What is the point of an iphone that can either be on a call or use data but not both at the same time? Secondly, hsdpa and hsupa technology is not available on verizon’s towers, so again the Iphone wouldn’t be worth much more than a razor on their network. Lastly, LTE, more commonly known as 4g for at&t will destroy sprint and verizon. It’s a simple software upgrade for at&t no new towers needed, No radio upgrades either. Verizon has to pull all of their towers down and start over again, not 1.5 years like some of you said, more like 5 years to get to where at&t is. And do any of you watch tv? Do you really think that apple would do business with a company that mocks their “there’s an app for that” campaign? Stop believing what stupid bloggers write. In 5 years two companies will be left standing, at&t and verizon, and the only reason verizon will still be there is because of their landline, cable, and fiber networks, not their shitty cdma network.
Looks like you have little idea yourself. AT&T is having major issues in some markets and are being killed by Verizon and Sprint in those markets. And no.. Verizon will not have to pull all their towers down. They are rolling out an upgrade to 4g this summer as well. Apple has been in talks with Verizon since a little over a year ago because of the issues that some locations are having with AT&T network. While it is very true that the AT&T network and the Verizon networks are not compatible. That just means that there would have to be a different type of build of the Iphone made. As for talking and data… only the 3g Iphone (and 3gs) support that. The 2G that many people still have do not. Technical Limitations.
And yes Verizon is going to the LTE for 4G. So no it won’t destroy Verizon as you say.
hopefully iphone 4G will work with metropcs
CDMA should be around for awhile at least a generation of a phone. If you think about it, most people don’t even keep a phone for more than 2+ years. It’s up to Apple to whether or not it’s worth the effort to make a separate device. Approximately 10% of the world still use CDMA networks and that number hasn’t been shown to be “dying.” It may not be better, but perhaps offering multiple networks will allow carriers to find other ways to remain competitive. comcompetative.
Wishful thinking, just plain wrong. As i stated above, cdma is substandard, at&t sold their cdma network to verizon…lol. Then they went out and built a real gsm network. As a matter of fact, GSM is far far superiour to cdma, the only reason cdma exists is because of a democratic congress that thought it was important for “competitive balance” to have three networks. Guess how many networks are in europe. Answer: 1 GSM(Global system for mobile communications)
CDMA while is a different tech.. its not exactly substandard. And the country with the highest population count still uses CDMA.. Not exactly telling since that country is China. But that fact invalidates you statement about “democratic congress” The real question for people is WHERE are they going to use the phone. If they are going to the European market area then they NEED a GSM cell phone. Asian markets use CDMA as the primary. CDMA has traditionally been faster than GSM. That speed depends on how heavy the traffic is on that tower and signal conditions at the time.
While AT&T and the GSM networks SIM cards, except in the USA, CDMA uses a different type of card that basically functions the same way.
CDMA also because of the way the signal works reaches further and more reliably to rural customers over GSM.
Based on another article.. “In theory” LTE will hand off to both GSM and CDMA. We will see how that works in the future.
As for the Iphone.. maybe if they made it where people could replace the battery themselves more would like the phone.
lets just wait and see
i LOve Iphones :D who Agrees ^_^
u guys i was watching youtube videos about iphone 4Gs and someone said that they work for apple and it will come out on june 23 but there is no proof not 100%
Not likely… Apple has a very strict non-disclosure agreement. Everyone including contractors have to sign it.. if they break it. they are release on the spot no questions asked. But that is as good a date as anyone could make. Usually they won’t even let their call centers know about a new phone until day of release.
AT&T service is awful here in NYC, so trust me, Verizon isn’t going anywhere.
Here’s food for the brain. If CDMA is becoming extinct, then why does the company with the most powerful and largest network still utilize it? We all know that company is Verizon. Mind you, I have T-Mobile & Sprint and find that my Sprint service is better in terms of sound quality and reliability in the NYC region.
Here’s a bit of info to clarify some confusion regarding the GSM vs. CDMA controversy.
Before deciding which technology is superior, let’s talk a little more about these two tecnologies:
CDMA: stands for Code Division Multiple Access. Both data and voice are separated from signals using codes and then transmited using a wide frequency range. Because of this, there are more space left for data transfer (this was one of the reasons why CDMA is the prefered technology for the 3G generation, which is broadband access and the use of big multimedia messages). 14% of the worldwide market goes to CDMA. For the 3G generation CDMA uses 1x EV-DO and EV-DV. It has a lot of users in Asia, specially in South Korea.
GSM: stands for Global System Mobile. Even though it is sold as “the latest technology” in several countries, this technology is older than CDMA (and also TDMA). But keep in mind that this doesn’t mean that GSM is inferior or worse than CDMA. Roaming readiness and fraud prevention are two major advantages from this technology. GSM is the most used cell phone technology in the world, with 73% of the worldwide market. It has a very strong presence in Europe.
TDMA technology is the less used from the three main digital technologies (GSM, CDMA and TDMA) and we think it will gradually be replaced to CDMA or GSM. That’s why the GSM vs CDMA war. At one corner, GSM operators say it is better “because it uses a SIM chip, it is the most used technology worldwide, it is more secure and it is more advanced”. On the other corner, CDMA followers say it is better “because it is the 3G generation chosen technology and GSM will migrate to CDMA since CDMA is more advanced…”
But which one of these statements are correct? Acordingly to Nokia, “this discussion is not about technology anymore, but about market”. We think this is the best way to describe the war between these two cell phone technologies.
In the beginning, GSM was in fact superior. It had more services and allowed more data transfer. But CDMA, facing the advantages of the competitor standard, soon delivered the same features found on GSM. Nowadays, it is not possible to say that GSM services are better than CDMA. Multimedia messages, video, high-speed Internet access, digital camera and even PDA function are some of the features we can found on both technologies. The new CDMA 1XRTT technology, which previews what G3 cell phones will bring, is more advanced than EDGE, technology from the beginning of 3G generation, allowing higher transfer rates.
Even the GSM SIM card advantage, that allows you to change your cell phone and keep your phone list, is being surplaced by some CDMA operators with a service that allows you to store your phone book on the operator’s database, allowing you to recover your phone book even if your cell phone is stolen (which is not possible with GSM, since if your cell phone is stolen, your SIM card will be stolen together). Notice that recently a new accessory called SIM backup was released, which allows you to backup the data stored in your SIM card. Also some GSM operators are offering a similar backup service.
So, nowadays both technologies are equiparated in technology, but this picture won’t be like that in the future. Afterall, CDMA evolution ground is wider and in a few years it will be superior than GSM. This means that GSM operators will disapear? Not at all. They will migrate over CDMA and the war will continue, because the existing CDMA operators chose to use 1xEV-DO and1XEV-DV technologies for their 3G network and the existing GSM operators have opted for a different technology, called WCDMA. Also, even though the current GSM operators will migrate to WCDMA, they still can use their existing GSM network. So users won’t feel anything special when the operators shift to the new cell generation (3G), independently from the technology they choose.
Hope this helps out a bit.
it dosn’t matter how much longer cdma will be around.. say they can sell a total of ten million i phones to cdma users all around the world and they make six hundred for each phone that is sold. that is 600 million new dollars to new customers.. in one year.. and if the costumers decide they want to keep the i phone they will have to buy it again (so making more money of same person here) for another network.. if the i phone only stayed with at&t and never went with another company they would still be just another little store trying to make ends meat.. find out how much apple made in the U.S. and then compare that with the world.. if you can make an extra dollar why not.. it’s business. and why not touch and untaped resource.
