This makes no sense since with the free stanza reader your ipod touch/iphone already acts a ebook reader. I don’t believe it.

Why wouldn’t Apple jump into the ebook reader game? This is the wave of the future and one comment here stating that ‘people in the U.S. do not read much’ anymore is ludicrous. Some people, and more than we may believe, are interested in having a device that does just one thing and not always a smartphone that does a million things.

If Apple does make a tablet a new device next year, it would make sense for it to be able to consume every single type of content the Apple store sells. That means audio books, music, music videos, TV shows, movies, and apps. Apple is into capitalizing on what they have built. I seriously doubt they would take 3 steps backwards and come out with something that is only useful for reading. People in US do not read a lot any more, overall.

There is one thing that people kind of ignore, though. Apple has had Text To Speech (TTS) for a super long time. Part of their OS since back in the 1980′s. I just used the current version that a couple of hours ago to listen to part of a great article on Cocoa MVC programming. It worked great.

I’ve been hearing about this tablet everywhere, should be interesting to hear what they have to announce Jan 27th from San Fran. I bet it will be something to compete with Amazon’s kindle.

ive seen some really ugly concept images of the proposed islate and tbh most seem dog ugly. The oversized iphone 10″ screen seems in my opinion the better looking, heres to hoping.

There are 2 things that lead me to the conclusion your ‘sources’ are a drunk bloke at the bar:

1) Why would Apple launch a new version of the App store to market & sell e-books? iTunes is already the dominant music management & deployment software on most peoples (who would use this kind of technology, anyway) computers. Apple will just do what they did with movies and add a section to the iTunes store.

2) The iSlate will run iPhone OS 4.0? So they’ll completely ignore the OS X mobile that’s been in development for some time now? I doubt it.

I’d not be surprised if Apple did launch a dedicated reader. The Kindle & Sony demonstrated there is a market out there, all Apple have to do is redefine the reader market like they did the portable music player market.

There will be a netbook/tablet announced before September I’m sure. Perhaps as part of a new suite of products less about serious computing and more about integrating technology for entertainment.

So it will create a BACKWARD device that only does 1 thing… and other companies already have been selling for quite some time???

Why would you *REMOVE* everything that the iPod Touch can do… except ‘read text’… and then try to sell it for a huge some of money?

(Giant, flat, touch-screens aren’t cheap.)
