iSlate is an eBook reader by Apple, not a Tablet

iSlate eBook readerMany rumors of Apple launching an Apple tablet, which is believed to be a large tablet version of the iPhone/iPod touch have been spreading around. The latest rumor suggests that it will be called an iSlate. Our sources have told us that the rumor about Apple launching a product with the iSlate name is true, but the product won’t be an Apple tablet, it will be an eBook reader. The iSlate will be a competitor to the Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook and other e-readers that are out there. Our sources have also told us that the iSlate eBook reader will run on Apple’s upcoming iPhone OS 4.0 software and will include a seperate App Store for eBooks. Apple will be announcing the iSlate eBook reader at WWDC 2010, which our sources says is being held on June 7.

We’ve created an iSlate section in our forums at this link, feel free to join and talk about the iSlate.

….just a reader? No way. Steve Jobs talked in last NYTimes-Interview about a “general-purpose-device” http://bit.ly/36bLw

  2. Kim says:

So much rumors on iSlate as e readers or simply the next gen of tablets. Hope Apple will come out officially on this, if they really care about consumers. Yes, there are some competitive aspects to be take care of, but people are now becoming confused.

    • Common Sense says:

Confused? You can’t buy the device yet so why does it matter if people are confused about what might or might not be coming out? It isn’t like you are going to order the thing thinking its an ebook and get a general purpose tablet. I promise you will know exactly what it is by the time you can actually order it.

Apple Inc. will not confirm thos product as it will give away its competitive edge. I just hope that whatever OS it will run would be a proper OS ie not iphone OS in its current form that can only run one application at a time. Running an OS that can double as a reader as well as a funtional notebook/tablet will kill the need for users to buy a dedicated reader. You can then use the device as a second, albeit less powerful, computer when you are on the move. I wonder what connectivity options the device will have? Wifi only or maybe 3g data also?

Screw Apple. How long have we been waiting for this “mystical” tablet now.
But hey thats ok, there are plenty of other companies ACTUALLY INOVATING. ASUS is always coming out with new models, and other companies are as well.
Apple had a chance to increase how many people were using the Apple OS and once again they have blown it. They seem to be happy with only a few people using the Apple OS. Great stratagy for taking on Microsoft.
Speaking of MS they acually have a Tablet in the works, they call it a booklet but its closer than anything Apple will have in the near or distant future.
    SCREW APPLE.

I don’t agree. Some app developers have been told to make their apps run on a larger resolution screen for a demo in January. This suggests that the iSlate will not only be an ereader but will run the apps that you can run on the iPhone, which is what people are expecting. Also, all the supply chain reports suggest something big in Feb-March timeframe. The new iPhone will be announced in June/July timeframe, as usual.

  6. Murali says:

It has to be a kitchen computer (competing with Google’s OS)…

  7. Yavor Ivanov says:

Come on! It will be a multimedia oriented device. It probably would run almost all of the iPhone/iPod Touch stuff and will add something to become an e-reader too.

If you think about it being an e-reader only device doesn’t really makes sense for Apple. They never released a device that isn’t in sync with at least two of their businesses (MobileMe, iTunes store… etc).

It’ll run almost for certain all the iPhone apps (maybe excluding game titles and some other stuff that just makes sense being iPhone only apps).

    Cheers!

There is a rat in separate.

  9. Jerald says:

Boy, you haven’t been following Apple long, have you Kim? Apple will do what Apple will do. They produce products Steve Jobs likes, and don’t give a rip about the consumer’s thoughts about what they want.

Like the iPhone, just wait and see what Apple has up it’s sleeve. Chances are it’s about 15 degrees off what you think it is, and will revolutionize whatever market it goes for.

  10. Dave says:

Clearly no-one knows exactly what this thing is or when it will be released, everyone has so called “sources” and more than likely they’ll end up wrong. I think I’ll just wait to see what’s released before I make any judgement.

  11. Greg Wilker says:

I find this hard to believe that it’s just going to be an e-reader…. when they came out with the iphone…. yes it was a phone but so so much more. You said it’s going to run iphone OS4.0 the current iphone is way more advanced than the current e-readers. Apple would have to dumb down iPhone OS4.0 to make it an e-reader.

  12. Scott says:

I can’t comment on the quality of your sources, but given a little thought I feel either their information or this headline is misleading. I don’t doubt that apple might add an eBook store to compliment the music/video, and app stores. However, iphone os on the ipod touch already creates what is essentially a tiny tablet. Removing features that already exist while enlarging that platform doesn’t make sense.

This is only speculation, of course, but to me it seems clear that the iSlate will work much like a larger, more powerful ipod touch. While that may force consumers to redefine what they think of as a tablet (or spawn a new category entirely,) it would certainly be more than *just* an eBook reader

  13. sean says:

If it really ends up just a crippled e-reader, it’ll get hacked into functionality like the Nook.
But if its running the iphone OS, then it should have access to the app store. So I fail to see how it’s not really a tablet

  14. Scott says:

Sorry, I should have said “after a little thought on my part.” It looks like I’m implying that you posted this without considering the matter, which was not my intention.

  15. Jesus says:

    could it be both?

  16. Ray says:

Bull!! No way they would release another ebook reader. They’ve been working on the tablet longer than the iPhone. If they were simply going to build an ebook reader or a big screen iPod touch, it would have been released years ago. I’m sure it will be able to be used as an ebook reader as well as for all the same things the iPod touch is used for, but there’s going to be something revolutionary about this device, either in the technology or the types of media they push through it. I remember how far off everyone was in their predictions for the iPhone, then Apple came out with something that was light years ahead of even the wildest predictions. My hopes is that the same is going to happen with this device, otherwise why would it be taking this long?

    • Steve says:

eBook reader functionality will be on the tablet by default if it has the iPhone OS. Today, you can download Kindle for iPhone/iPod Touch from the App Store and it has at least one advantage over the Kindle — you can read eBooks in low or no light conditions — with white on black as an option. Of course, the disadvantage is that the iPod Touch does not hold a charge as long as the Kindle.

With Amazon having released software for the Apple Platforms to entice users to the larger form factor (while continuing to lose money on eBooks), it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

  17. Steve says:

It will likely be multi-functional — an eBook reader, a PDF reader, a blog reader, a YouTube and iTunes personal TV, etc.

It *may* also have ports for the LCD Cinema Display, which will provide a keyboard and mouse option.

  18. Volker says:

@quickpwn Your credibility is on the line with this bit of news.

  19. our sources says:

…my sources told me that you’re a phony!

  20. logan says:

I don’t see them releasing JUST an e-book reader.
Apple is more innovative than that.
However i’m disapointed that this is a focus.
E-books aren’t that great and have been around for years.
God knows why they are flourishing now.
