Best Buy Black Friday Eid Al Adha ad causes disappointment to many

In Best Buy’s Black Friday ad, they included a Happy Eid al-Adha message to recognize the holiday that Muslims around the world will be celebrating this week. For Muslims, Eid is like Christmas and this year it happens to be in the same week as Black Friday and Thanksgiving. Surprisingly, it looks like this ad has caused disappointment among many Best Buy customers.
A topic on the Best Buy forums is full of 10 pages where customers are complaining about Best Buy wishing Muslims a happy Eid. As I was reading the topic I noticed that many people were saying that they will no longer shop at Best Buy, some were saying that Best Buy should have put something about Christmas, and some said that they were shocked. Due to the complaints by a lot of people, a Best Buy supervisor, Elizabeth had to post the following response:
Thanks for sharing your point of view regarding our recent ad, which included a wish for a “Happy Eid al-Adha”.
Best Buy’s customers and employees around the world represent a variety of faiths and denominations. We respect that diversity and choose to greet our customers and employees in ways that reflect their traditions.
We do use the word “holiday” in some of our advertising because it is meant to be inclusive to everyone. However, just as we have in the past, we will also reference specific holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa in our weekly ads, store signage and other advertising vehicles.
We encourage our employees to interact with customers naturally and feel free to wish them a Merry Christmas if they are celebrating that holiday. Thanks again for your feedback.

I really don’t see anything wrong with Best Buy adding a “Happy Eid Al-Adha” text in their ad. It just proves that Best Buy appreciates diversity. It is unfortunate that people are taking other meanings from this ad. What are your thoughts on this? I’d like to end this post with: Happy Eid to any of our readers who are celebrating Eid this week, and happy Thanksgiving to any of our readers who are celebrating Thanksgiving this week.

Excellent ads! Way to go! Happy Christmas, Hannukah, Eid to all!
Those who revile such ads are those who hate the freedoms America promises for all religions including Judaism, Islam, Buddism. They have no clue what America stands for!
If everyone starts thinking like you in this country, the whole world will become a very peaceful place…keep it up! You have touched my heart.
Thank you Best Buy to wishing Muslims an Eid Greeting. There are close to six million Muslim living in US including myself who would love to shop at Best Buy. We do apprecate if we receve a greeting once in a while.

Thanks so much! I’m glad Best Buy recognized our Religion, and it really meant a lot.
I didnt see what was wrong either, as long as all religions are represented equally.
Thanks again, and I wish everyone happy holidays as well!

This is womderful. I am pleased to see that Best Buy is not afraid to show appreciation to all it’s customers. It is wonderful to see that they choose to not comform. I also love that a corporate representative went on the record to not only encourage celebrating all cultures and religions but made certain that Best Buy is not apologizing for this siuation. Eid Mubarak to all!!
Dear Best Buy,
I would like to personally thank you for wishing a “Happy Eid Al-Adha,” in your pre-Thanksgiving sales paper. It means a lot to me that a company such as yours would take the time out to wish us a happy holiday. You definitely have my support!
Thank you Bestuy for the wishes and I will be faithful customer!!! Happy Eid!
What I find interesting is the fact that, the Best Buy shopper community or atleast the non-islamic faith percentage, is having a huge deal about the small greeting, when in the past they have had references in their ads about Christmas, hmmm why didn’t anyone complain when they said that? The answer? They’re becoming jealous, or actually a better word would be prejudiced that there is something about Muslims in a ad ONCE, when there are MULTIPLE Christmas messages. Simply put, people are just being prejudiced towards Muslims.
thank you best buy u have touched my heart and indeed u r The Best In The West !
Best Buy is a politically correct organization that is willing to sell their soul for a buck, what a bunch of spineless corporate geezers.
hi Best Buy,
I heartly appreciate your courage to wish Muslims Eid-ul-Adha.
that’s really great of you! I am sure every Muslim who gets to know about it, will be excited and thankful and would appreciate your courage, especially that you did not appologize even after the hot discussion/comments about your ad!
thank you again

Hello and Salam to everyone!
I am a best buy employee and been working with the company for quit few years. I love working at best buy and love intracting with people, wether they are customers or other employees. I am actually very dissapointed in some people for writing complain regarding the black friday add, which also included a happy eid al adha for muslims. well they might have hated it, but I loved it, and felt honored to work in such a place that doesnt see any diffrence between choices and religions. and I love the fact that best buy was the only company which posted such thing in their ad.
last but not least, I didnt know people still carry a closed mind, for a while i thaught racism and hattred is gone after we had Obama as a president, but i guess not.
