We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded

Windows 7 Unloading the Box error

If you are a college student who purchased Windows 7 for $29, you should have received your download link for Windows 7 in your e-mail. I received mine, and like many other people I got an Unloading the box error message: We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Microsoft and Digital River are both aware of this problem and are working on fixing this.

This error message only appears for those people who are trying to update from a 32-bit Windows operating system to a 64-bit. You cannot upgrade from a 32-bit system to a 64-bit system, according to Microsoft’s FAQ page. I would recommend just saving all your data to an external hard drive and then doing a clean install of Windows 7. If you still want to upgrade you can, but it’s not going to be easy. You’ll need to do a custom install, and follow the steps here.

Lol I was 1 hour to late of reading this, now I get to waste all day talking to MS just to keep me on hold with no anwsers. Grr I want my money back and I’ll just run to the store for the cd. They should have that stated ATM when you are about to buy it. That’s BS!!

  3. Chris says:

Ya they told me to burn it on a DVD and it’ll boot up on start up also lol, Silly MS,

  4. illiteratepuppy says:

exactly what files do they want you to burn onto the cd? you can’t burn those three files that you download (setup1.box, setup2.box, win7-hp-retail-en-us-x64.exe) and expect that to install the OS. you want to burn the files that are inside those boxes.

if i’m wrong on this please someone correct me. the folder that the unpacking creates seems to contain the installation files…but i cannot unpack that to burn onto a dvd to clean install without getting the error.

    sigh…windows ftl

That’s why I’m not updating and can any of you tell me what’s new???

  6. Chris says:

Buy the DVD at the store, finally they refunded my money and ran to the store for the DVD and no probs, just don’t select dowload if you have x32 and want to upgrade to x64, if staying with 32 or 64 then the download works

yeah i also had the same problem. i was skeptical about upgrading to 64 bit from my 32 bit but i called the microsoft tech guys and they said that it wouldn’t be a problem. ha. now i get to sit around and wait for the same call.. unless that link up there can help out… ugh

download the windows 7 usb/dvd tool here

    http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool

this will take the downloaded files creating an .iso image to be burnt to a dvd disc. After that is all done will be able to use the bootable disc at windows startup and will begin the installation process for windows 7

There is a solution to this problem. See the link below.

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html

It requires you to use oscdimg.exe to convert the downloaded and unboxed files into an iso image, then burn this to DVD.

  14. Schatje says:

    oscdimg.exe -m -h -u2 -lWIN7_P_EN -bG:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com G:\expandedSetup\ C:\WIN7P_x64.ISO

Then burn WIN7P_x64.ISO with DVD burner, google for it, you will find how to make a bootable CD from setup1.box setup2.box
