iPhone 3.1.2: iTunes Update

Written By Unknown on Thursday, October 8, 2009 | 5:30 AM

iPhone 3.1.2 update message

Almost a month ago, Apple released the iPhone 3.1 update. Today Apple has released the iPhone 3.1.2 update for iPhone and iPod Touch users. This update does not really add anything new, but it does fix important bugs so iPhone and iPod Touch users should update.

The iPhone 3.1.2 software update includes the following:

  • Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep

  • Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart

  • Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

How to update to iPhone 3.1.2

1. Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your PC.

2. Launch the iTunes application and click the Check for updates button.

3. iTunes will show you the above window saying: "iTunes will update your iPhone to iPhone 3.1.2 software and will verify the update with Apple". Click on the Update button.
iPhone 3.1.2 software update

4. An iPhone OS 3.1.2 software update window will show up, click on the Next button. Read and and accept the license agreement. Once you've done that your download will start.

5. The file size of this update varies depending on which device you're updating. Once the iPhone 3.1 firmware update is done downloading it will start the installation process on your iPhone.

iPhone 3.1.2 Download Links

If you are having trouble downloading the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware through the iTunes Application then you can directly download the appropriate firmware for your device using the below links:

Note: Don't use Safari to download iPhone 3.1.2 IPSW files, instead use another browser. Safari downloads this as a .ZIP and iTunes is not able to recognize the firmware that way.

iPhone 3.1.2 Jailbreaking information

You can jailbreak your iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, or iPod Touch on iPhone 3.1.2. I will update this post once an iPhone 3.1.2 jailbreak is out.

Geohot hasn't confirmed that his jailbreak, blackra1n, fully works with 3.1.2 but appuloha1l (a developer i've never heard of up until yesterday and may be a fraud) is claiming to be releasing a 3.1.x software for jailbreak of all devices OTB and ALSO claims to be releasing an unlock for the 3.1.x baseband, so you iPhone users that need an unlock may still be in luck. appuloha1l and ferociousbird (the unlock) are supposed to release this Sunday.

Nice to have

You say we can jailbreak it but so far they havent been able to come up with a jailbreak for 3.1. Ive been patient but it would be nice to know a time frame. And why is windows so much harder than mac?
I guess i just have to continue to wait.

iPhone 3.1.2: Software Update includes some great new features, as well as all the features from previous updates.

O.K. guys so that's the solution i've found.
just plug your iphone to another itunes! (on another pc)
and restore it (with shift).

The battery still sucks. I had no other problem except the terribly poor battery life. Please fix apple.

I m desperately awaitng for this… yesterday was the firs time i tried to learn how to upgrade, and unfortunately since the latest was the 3.1.2 software, i errenously restored my phone on the same.. i have a edge one which is why i used the iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, now all i see is a usb cable sign pointing to itunes, when i go to itunes it says that my Sim is not supported, i am completeley trapped, now as i understand since my phone is restored on iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, only blackra1n can help me, please let me know if there are any other work arounds… (this is the first time i tried and i guess i have fallen into trap) any help will be appreciated.. thanks.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n. As far as donations go, they are much appreciated, but not until after blackra1n works for you. I never ask for donations before the tool is released.

Warning 3g and 3gs unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team's offerings. Also blackra1n doesn't hacktivate.

blackra1n.com got a quarter million unique hits, and that's without any content. This jailbreak is going to be huge!!!

Blackra1n is out, jailbreaks the iPhone, all versions, by the great GeoHot. Blackra1n.com

October 11, 2009 at 11:04 PM

Update is out. It's called Blackra1n by Geoshot (<---That guys a genius). Visit http://blackra1in.com and click on the windows logo. Simple jailbreak, all you have to do is click the button "Make it Rain", and it jailbreaks. It works for all iDevices, (even 3rd gen ipod touch, but the 3rd gen one is a tethered jailbreak)

October 15, 2009 at 2:21 AM

Nice. I thuought my iPhone's hardware is failing due to the seemingly unresponsive 'home' button. The problem seems to be gone after I patched to 3.1.2 though. Kudos Apple, and thank you to quickpwn for the news!

I’m working on a Sony Vaio FW 270, 64 Bit, Windows Vista Premium,
Itunes, 3G Iphone for which I was not aware and updated to
3.1 (7C144) with Modem Firmware 05.11.07. By the way, this Iphone
Was purchased in Nov/08 model number MB702LL.
1) Considering this configuration, can this Iphone atleast be jailbroken
And if so, procedure and download link for the TOOL.
2) Will jail breaking, at this stage, complicate unlocking in future, if
3) will a jailbreak/unlock for Windows be available for the 3.1/05.11.07?
I’m new at jail breaking/unlocking and I am sure that I’m not alone in
This situation. What can de done?????

October 25, 2009 at 2:29 PM

Is there any way u can unblocked the 3.1.2 version iphone let me know if anybody knows how to unlocked it thanks!

October 26, 2009 at 3:50 PM

Download the iphone 3.0 restore ipsw file. Start iTunes. Connect your phone and put in DFU mode. After iTunes finds your iphone hold shift while clicking restore. This will allow you to choose an ipsw file to restore too. Choose the 3.0 ipsw file you downloaded. The restore with 3.0 may fail the first time. Just try it again. After a successfull 3.0 restore your phone will still be locked. Use redsn0w and the downloaded 3.0 ipsw to unlock your phone. When using redsn0w DO NOT try to unlock, install cydia and icy all at once!! It will fail. Run redsn0w 3 times; once for unlock, once for cydia and once more for icy. Good luck!!

Just turn off Push Notifications, this should save you a LOT of battery.

November 13, 2009 at 7:58 PM

Any one please! How do you update the iPhone software after downloading it from outside iTunes. iTunes doesnt seem to have a way of directing it to an already downloaded iPhone 3.1.2 update other than it going to the iTunes store. The store is too slow for dowloading this big update .

November 22, 2009 at 1:27 AM

iPhone 3.1.2 download (iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 241 MB)

does 3.1.2 os works on 2G iphone ?

November 27, 2009 at 1:04 AM

the update says it will "verify" the update
so if a person didn't pay for the 3.0 or 3.1, will he have an upgrade without a problem?

February 3, 2010 at 6:28 AM

Connect the Iphone and open I tunes. If phone is in recovery mode, hold both buttons for 10 secs and then release the power button.

Device should pop up in I tunes.

Before clicking restore hold the shift button on the keyboard. A window should open. Go to where you saved file and then restore. I'm no expert but i hope this helps.

February 3, 2010 at 6:46 AM

I believe you can simply restore your network settings.

Go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Setting.

You will not loose any apps but will have to re-enter passwords for Wi-Fi Networks previously saved.

Hope this helps.

February 4, 2010 at 2:26 PM

What happens to you guys who accidentally upgrade is that you click check for updates in your iTunes and you leave the phone plugged in. If you do upgrade this way "always, always, always, always" unplug your phone form the computer when starting the upgrade download and don't plug it in until you restart iTunes. This will prevent accidental upgrades as iTunes will do it automatically this way. It happened to me once, thank god someone came out with an unlock for that firmware version I upgraded too. From now on I am using Custom IPSW upgrades.

February 5, 2010 at 5:34 AM

Hi Everyone,

I backed up my iPhone 3G on my WinXP PC approx 3 days ago, because I was worried that my Categories app might crash things somehow.

Then my Categories app crashed things somehow. I'm not able to see the contents of any of those folders.

It looks like I'm going to have to restore, but I don't know whether I ought to upgrade and Blackra1n again, or if I can restore without upgrading from 3.1.2, or what. I'm a little confused, and I feel like I could do something terribly unnecessary if I don't ask someone -- so here I am.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

I currently have a jail broken and unlocked iphone running 3.0 and baseband 04.26.08.

How can I upgrade to 3.1.2 and keep it unlocked? With itunes, it will only allow me to upgrade to 3.1.3.

I really want 3.1.2 because it has a great feature to disable the constant Outlook calendar alarms (I only want them on my PC and not also on my iphone). But I use my iphone on T-mobile and I need to keep it unlocked. I can not risk going to 3.1.3 using itunes because it will lock my phone again.

Which non-itunes tool can I use to simply upgrade my iphone to the latest unlocked release?

February 18, 2010 at 12:05 PM

I am trying to upgrade to this version after 3.1.3 has been released.. I downloaded the file but can't seem to be able to install it through iTunes.. any ideas?

February 20, 2010 at 12:15 PM

Hazem: I successfully installed 3.1.2 on my phone by using shift-restore (on PC) or option-restore (mac) within itunes rather than the automatic upgrade to 3.1.3. Make sure your phone is thoroughly backed up before doing this since it will wipe your phone clean to the non-jailbreaked 3.1.2 version.

For some reason I had to install the version twice but then I was allowed to restore my latest backup.
I'll jailbreak it again next..
Hope this helps.

Did anyone find an answer to this yet? I have iPhone 3GS with 3.0 and I want to update to 3.1.2 without going to 3.1.3...any help would be appriciated.

I keep getting this error when I try to use the Restore function with the shift key
"The iPhone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

Please help!

February 28, 2010 at 9:23 AM

Currently there is no solution yet to unlock the OS 3.1.3 You went back to 3.1.2 but still have the baseband at 3.1.3, that is why the iPhone does not have any signal with the T-mobile sim card or at&t sim card.

I have an iPhone banner at the main website. Do some reading and just enjoy the iPhone 3G as an iPod.
