Enable iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS MMS Update through iTunes

Enable MMS iPhone
Today iPhone users in USA will finally get MMS! AT&T will issue a carrier update through iTunes 9.0.1. In this post I will show you how you can get the MMS update on your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS once it’s out.

This is not a firmware update, it’s a carrier update so you will be able to download and enable MMS quickly on your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS.

How to enable MMS through iTunes

1. Download iTunes 9.0.1 (if you don’t already have it).

2. Connect your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS to your computer and open iTunes.

MMS Carrier Settings

3. Once the iPhone MMS update is available, you will see the following message on iTunes: “An update to the carrier settings for your iPhone is available. Would you like to install it now?“. Click “Update Settings“.

MMS Carrier Settings Updated

4. After you click “Update Settings“, iTunes will show the following message: “Your iPhone carrier settings were updated successfully“. Click “Ok“.

5. Reboot your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS. Hold down your power button until the Slide to Power off button appears, slide to power off. When your iPhone is off, press the power button to turn it on again.

You should now have MMS on your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS!

Note: This won’t work on the iPhone 2G.

I have a Jailbroken 3gs with 3.0. I also had the MMS hack enabled but MMS was not working until this morning it started working with out syncing. Now I sync and don’t see the update to the carrier settings. I guess iTunes saw that I already had the update.

Just read the most recent post here on quickpwn and it will tell you how to do it if you are running either 3.0 or 3.0.1 for both windows and mac windows is on page two of the post

I did the update and thought my phone was a paper weight, after about 20 hours trying to fix it, i called apple, no charge, and spent about 2 hours on the phone with them, they helped turn my paperweight back to working… if your friends need help, i can help get thier phones working again, but they wont be JB.

Will this work for a jailbroken 3gs still on 3.0 or will I have to update to 3.1?

    This ^^

  8. Gnewt75 says:

Updated the carrier settings on the JB phone…rebooted. Still cannot send or recieve pics texts.

  9. PMoney says:

You will need to go to settings and then messages and from there you will be able to enable the mms settings…

  10. rmcgeher says:

I manually updated the file – downloaded it – then clicked option – update and selected the 5.5 carrier file. Rebooted phone. Appears I can send, waiting to see if I can receive.

    I am on 3Gs, 3.01, JB iphone.

    • Chris says:

Hey how did you do this would you mind letting me know how i really do not want to update my phone 3.1 id like to stay at 3.0 for now

  11. Sal says:

I’m waiting for the 3.1 jailbreak for windows users does anyone have a clue when that will come out?

  12. stanmanh says:

I’m in the same situation as “iCizzle”. Do you have to run OS3.1 to get carrier update for MMS? I read that updating to 3.1 will disable my current ability to tether my 3g OS 3.0.1 iphone.

  13. David says:

iTunes 9 is required? Screw that. I’m waiting for a 3GS 3.1 jailbreak before updating from iTunes 8.

  14. Doug says:

    3.0 on a 3GS, still no carrier update yet….

  15. Jeremy says:

Installed the carrier update on my jb phone and it worked for me.

  16. indigit4l says:

I’m on itunes 9.0.1. I have JB 3.0.1. I downloaded the carrier update from an outside source and I would like to update it manually or through itunes. Please someone specify how. Rmcgeher, “I manually updated the file – downloaded it – then clicked option – update and selected the 5.5 carrier file” … where did you click option?? These instructions don’t seem precise enough.

What about us iPhone 2G users

  18. Ron says:

So this is my case. I have the lastest itunes and im on 3.1 firmware. I connected my iphone and upgraded my carrier to 5.5. I rebooted and turn it back on. I try sending a mms and it errors after loading to almost the end. Any explanations to this problem? Can it be that At&T cant control the mms traffic? I also noticed that the 3G internet was going crazy (It was changing from 3G to edge).

  19. Is there anyway to do the carrier update without having to jump to 3.1? I am on 3.0 and dont want all the issues I am reading about!

  20. GhostRider says:

Follow the guides posted for manually upgrading
the carrier file to 5.5. Worked fine here on a 3GS 3.0 & a 3GS jailbroken 3.0.1. Be paitent for AT&T to remove the restriction for your account if you get a red exclamation fail at first. Took over an hour for it to go thru the first time
