MMS iPhone 3G/3GS date announced by AT&T

MMS iPhone AT&T

In a press release today AT&T has announced that the iPhone 3G/3GS will finally be getting Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) support. Many iPhone users have been waiting impatiently for this, and AT&T has finally announced a release date.

AT&T says that MMS will be coming to the iPhone 3G/3GS on September 25 through a free software update. That means the iPhone 3.1 update will not support MMS, because it's rumored to launch on September 9, the same day the iPod Touch 3rd generation is announced by Apple. Apple will probably issue the MMS update in an iPhone 3.1.1 update.

Ridiculous that's it's taken this long. Stupid for not having developed the capability and support when the iPhone was orginally released.

I think what everyone is forgetting is that there has been no mention if it is going to be free or if there is going to be additional charges. Judging from other phone text messaging plans that AT&T sells, there will be additional charges to use the service.

Well ...... About time ! I guess those fuc***'s at at&t finally got their sh** together ! They will probably be asses and charge for it though since they have numerous lawsuits from this whole mms thing ? I doubt anyone will win those cases since they are going to have it ready before the end of summer like they said . I guess we will have to wait and see ? I still say fu** at&t !

Any word from AT&T concerning tethering? I remember earllier this summer mms and tethering were lumped together as features of the 3.0 update that wouldn't be releasednon America until the end of the summer because, AT&T needed to increase their network or something to that affect. I honestly didn't expect them to hold out until September 25.

Rob, this question is for Rob who left the post, how did you enable mms?

AT&T will NOT charge extra for MMS. It's going to be part of your text package, if you have it already. I really hope AT&T's network can handle such a huge traffic increase when they launch MMS. Tethering won't be enabled for a while though... Not until next year.

I believe there are going to be additional charges, as my friend who works at AT&T says they plan to attach it to the "iPhone" package for an extra 5$, making it a total of 35$ just to use the iPhone, plus everything else (minutes, text messages, etc...) In addition, you can get a plan to make your iPhone into an AirCard for your laptop, however, that is another 30$, and only works everywere by the USA... Thanks for the huge Fail AT&T.

It's been confirmed that it's free by AT&T!

September 5, 2009 at 7:17 AM

The good news is AT&T is already turning it on, you just need 3.1 or the right carrier file hacked in. So far it seems the southeast is good to go and can confirm it works for me in Miami.

Because it's already working now I think that 3.1 is going to come out on the 25th. Also, I don't think Apple would release 3.1 and then 2 weeks later have their customers have to download a carrier file update.

I thought Apple would be releasing a 3.1 update in September 9 along with the new iPod Touch, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It's about damn time, said the guy who's had every generation & has been patiently wait'n. Now will redsn0w work on the new 3.1.1 update?

really..?? sept 25?? its no longer summer at that point. ... they said end of summer, not after summer. I didnt think they'd wait to the last effing minute. its no wonder apple and att keep getting sued. altho the mms thing probably isnt apples fault, but still. att knew this was coming they shoulda started working on it a LONG TIME AGO! im glad people are suing :)

First off I work for Att secondly these posts show Once again that people believe what they want to. Att did not provision mms because apple did not support it. Then they launch the 3gs and decide that it is time. World wide the only had to provision for the new product not the priors. Now with several million iPhone that did not support the feature it was never built in. So in order to provision correctly it takes time. We learned if the release when the rest if the world did and could not have 1/3 of our iPhone customers able to do something and not the others. So now that we finally have the feature provisioned and will allow all 3g and 3gs models up and running by the 25th is an accomplishment. So quit crying and enjoy the cheap porn your buddy is gonna send you.

Mr AT&T,

First off, let me remind you that jailbroken phones have been able to enjoy native MMS since about a week after the 3.0 launch. Therefore, there was and/or is a way to provision the phone for MMS. I personally don't appreciate your companys attitude of "We will have it out this summer... Maybe... If we feel like it..." Especially when there has been an almost perfect way of doing it for months. Having it up by the 25th isn't an accomplishment, its a disgrace to your paying customers. Maybe if you had it up by June 25th it would have been at least good business practice.

September 11, 2009 at 8:37 AM

I don't really think it's an issue that MMS is being released the 25th.

My only guess is that AT&T couldn't handle iPhone MMS with their infrastructure. Upgrades probably needed to be made to accommodate the iPhone and it's user's unlimited data-plan.

This is a great-step for AT&T to be able to handle this.

Sure mmms was out in the 5.0 but by trying that little work-around with the sim card swapping and etc... it would disable vvm so at&t needed to re-configure the carrier file correctly for the iphone b/c im sure we were using the carrier file for a non smartphone! stop complaining its only 10 days away! :D

Wow you need to represent better for an AT&T Employee. Your grammar and your message structure were atrocious. Have some pride in your company.
