If you want to jailbreak any iPhone running on iPhone OS 3.0.1, you must use redsn0w 0.8. This post will show a step-by-step tutorial on how to jailbreak iPhone 3.0.1 with redsn0w.
Note:
- redsn0w only recognizes iPhone 3.0 firmware (not 3.0.1 yet!), although you are running firmware 3.0.1 you must still download iPhone OS 3.0 firmware for your device.
- The recent iPhone 3.0.1 update does not fix the iPhone 3GS hole, so it’s safe for iPhone 3GS users to update. If you downloaded a purplera1nday file or your iBec or iBSS for iPhone 3GS you don’t need to redownload it because it’s identical in this update.
First you must download redsn0w for Windows, Mac, or Linux from here.
redsn0w 0.8 works for Phone 3.0.1, iPhone 3G 3.0.1, iPhone 3GS 3.0.1, iPod Touch 3.0, and iPod Touch 2G 3.0.
1. Download the iPhone OS 3.0 IPSW file for your device and save it to your desktop. Here are the file names for each device, make sure you have the right one:
- iPhone 2G – filename: iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw [download link]
- iPhone 3G – filename: iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw [download link]
- iPhone 3GS – filename: iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw [download link]
2. Open the redsn0w 0.8 application to jailbreak iPhone 3.0.1.
3. Click the Browse button.
4. Locate your device’s IPSW file that you downloaded in step 1 and click Open.
5. The redsn0w window will have the “IPSW successfully identified” message. Click the Next button to continue.
6. redsn0w will ask you to “Please select which options you would like to have“. Make sure the Install Cydia box has a check mark and then click Next.
7. redsn0w will ask you to make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to your computer. Make sure you plug in your device in to your computer and then turn it off. Click Next once you have done this.
8. redsn0w will now ask you to connect your device in DFU mode, you must do this properly to jailbreak iPhone 3.0.1.
- Hold down the Power button for 3 seconds
- Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (bottom center button) for 10 seconds
- Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button BUT KEEP holding the Home button for 30 seconds
- If you don’t do this properly you will get a DFU Mode Failed message and you’ll have to go back to step one.
9. Once your device has successfully entered DFU Mode, redsn0w will show the following message: “Please wait while your device is being jailbroken. Waiting for reboot.” Your device should reboot after this. If redsn0w is stuck on Waiting to Reboot, unplug your USB cable quickly and plug it back in. The jailbreaking process should continue after tha.
10. Once your device has rebooted redsn0w will start uploading the RAMDisk and kernel.
11. After everything has been successfully uploaded to your device, redsn0w will have; the “Done!” message. Your device will now reboot and you should see the Cydia app on your SpringBoard. Your iPhone is now jailbroken!

I want to update so I can get newer apps, etc. Should I just lock my phone by updating, then try to relock it? Can you jailbroke a phone that cannot be restored? I tried updating the software on my phone, I’ve tried EVERYTHING to restore it, but nothing works. No warranty. The apple guy I talked to thinks it’s hopeless since I tried so many things. Maybe if I jailbroke it, it would work.. but can I jailbreak a phone without being able to access anything in it?
have you tried dowloading the firmware and restoreing….if that doesnt work try the gen that you think you dont have..(i thought i had a gen 2 ipod touch, tried to downgrade so i could jailbreak, epic fail, turns out i have a gen 3
i tried to jail break it from another video on you tube, all it done was fully reset my phone, to a state that red snow would not touch it haha. it works now. but still cannot jail break it.
does this break work on the 3.1.2 firmware?

i’ve done this numerous amounts of times, but after the mms update, i tried to jailbreak my iphone 3g and it actually does successfully go through the process, but when it reboots Cydia is nowhere to be found on my Springboard.
i have just unlocked my iphone 3gs with os 3.1.2 using blackra1n. only thing i am having trouble trying to do is uploading the apps i have downloaded in torrents. Do i upload through itunes? or do i have to use something else?
Hi matty… iTunes is the only one to upload the apps & games.
But first you need to download a patch tool from cydia called (AppSync 3.0 or 3.1) belong to which version you have, this tool allowing cracked apps to be synced to & from iTunes. this is the only way i know..

Hi! Im trying to install Cydia on iphone 3G, software 3.1 with redsnow 0.8. When the phone goes in DFU mode starts to download the software but it won’t install Cydia. What should I do? Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem: It goes through everything as listed but when Redsn0w has done the disk picture remains on screen with the message ‘Downloading Jailbreak Data…’ and the timer is running underneath. This lasts for ages until it eventually goes back into iTunes restore mode.

i tried to unplug and plug iphone for many times but i still stuck in “waiting for reboot”, why?
I have a problem downloading the firmware itself, i download it and it just comes up as a folder with alot of files in it but not firmware to be found, buth then again i am terrible with computers, can anyone help me with this problem???

You need to change the file extension from .zip to .ipsw
Go into folder options and tell it not to hide known file extensions first!

I unlocked my phone 3G 3.0.1 it works fine for about 2 days. Know i get No Service. Any one have any idea.
I tryed to restore the phone but it ask me to update my phone to 3.1.2 should i do it.

Can I Please Get Some Help with my problem. I bought my iphone for $5 dollars form a friend who thought it was permanently water damaged. i fixed it with spraying compressed air into the headphone jack and the connecter. It worked!!! I didn’t want to wait to get it unlocked for 50 at the local mall. So i tred to do it myself. I was using software 2.2.1. I followed all the steps above and it froze at Downloading Jail-breaking Data (on the iphone itself), even though redsn0w said it was complete.
I reboted the iphone and it got stuck on the itunes and usb plug in screen. It told me i needed to restore the Iphone and download the upgrade. It downloaded it and tried to install but now states that there was a error: The Iphone “IPhone” could not be restored. An unkown error occurred (21).
My Iphone is now on a blank white screen and i have no idea what is wrong or how to fix. Please sombody help me. I got this for $5 and was so happy i fixed it.

Well I guess you need to update your itunes to the latest version and try restoring it again with 3.0.1. so you need to download both the current versions ( itunes + 3.0.1 firmware ). try this..
completed the download but it is stuck trying to reboot. still showing the jailbreaking signal.. what can i do plzzzzzz
Hi, Today I installed jailbreak version iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw with redsn0w .8 successfully. Cydia has installed but when I use Cydia it is trying load data but after some time Cydia close automaticly.
I am not sure that my i-phone 3g has unlock or not because I can receive any call.
Please help me for Cydia and unlocking of phone.
