iPhone Analytics company, Pinch Media is reporting in their newsletter that the percentage of jailbroken iPhones increased from 8.43% to 17.1% in the week of August 2. The percentage of sessions from jailbroken iPhones also increased from 6.65% to 8.2%. 17% of all iPhone users have performed a jailbreak, that’s an impressive number! Apple will not be happy about this, they don’t like jailbreaking.
In the week of July 26, the percentage of jailbreakers increased from only 8.0% to 8.43%, so something happened in the week of August 2 that made a lot of iPhone users decide to jailbreak. I believe the banning of Google Voice apps from the App Store was responsible for the huge increase. If people can’t get their apps through the App Store they will jailbreak to get them from Cydia. Apple has put a lot of restrictions on the App Store and the iPhone that users have to jailbreak in order to get features/applications they want.
Update: There was an error in the newsletter that Pinch Media sent out, Katherine Pan has e-mailed an updated newsletter with the correct statistics.
“Oops! The 17.1% jailbroken statistic was the percentage of new users, not unique users, that were jailbroken – which is still significant; out of the almost a million new devices we saw last week, 17.1% were jailbroken. Unique Users on Jailbroken phones increased slightly from 8.43% to 8.6%. Sessions on Jailbroken phones increased slightly also from 6.65% to 6.7%. It is also worth noting that a new OS version, 3.0.1, has appeared. There are now 56.4% users and 57.2% sessions on 3.0, and 18.0% users and 17.1% sessions on 3.0.1, for a total of 74.4% users and 74.3% sessions on OS 3.0 or higher.” – Katherine Pan, Pinch Media
A graph of the jailbreaking statistics can be seen below.

Almost 10%. That’s still a significant number. Basically…Apple and AT&T, 10% of your customers are so unsatisfied with the way you have presented the iPhone that they have taken the time to learn how to reprogram your firmware to get the features that they feel they deserve… and that all your competitors already have. This is so old school Apple. It’s why IBM bitch-slapped them in the 80’s and dropped them to 10% market where they’ve been holding ever since. Will Palm be the bitchslapper this time as Apple gets just as smug with their market leading (for now) iPhone? It’s funny how in 2009, Apple still doesn’t get it. I remember when Gateway moved ahead of Apple in the 1990’s (not x86 computers…freakin’ GATEWAY!). Apple needs to embrace the adaptations! There is a whole market that could be leveraged back in to PCs if they figured it out!
This is not good. If I develop an application in the future, it will be cracked. I will then lose more than 18% of the profits I deserve :(.
More like, when your application gets denied by apple, people who really want your app will jailbreak their iphones to get it. Thats the reality.
Sell it at cydia man.lol
Welcome to the wide world of computing. Everyone has their own motive. If they wanted to steal your app, they will. If they wanted to pay for your app, they will. An automatic assumption that every jailbreaking user is a software pirate is wrong. You also assume that your app will provide some useful feature that people who have jailbroken the iphone will also want. People will do what they want, when they want, if they believe it is their right. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t try and make it drink your way without getting kicked in the face.
That’s funny people are finally starting to stand up for there selfs.
How do they find out these statistics?
Sciizerg, jailbreaking doesn’t necessarily means cracking. We do want to jailbreak our phones to use the features they already have and which are hidden/locked by Apple.
One should not bother about others cracking his apps. Just make it worth!! I mean, it may be funny to have a “fart” app but I’d never spend a single cent on that. In the other hand, there are some very nice and useful apps out there. I’ve been buying some.
More, I don’t know anyway of testing an AppStore app before you buy so you’ll never know what you’re buying unless you have a folk which owns the app. This leads to cracking.
Apple is living in the past. The great eye-candy of the iPhone was the touchscreen display, simplicity. And now, most cellphone manufacturers have their touchscreen model and their stock software does much, much more than the iPhone does.
I still don’t get this f**** s*** doesn’t has a real bluetooth.
The only thing Apple has to offer, is design. Both outside and inside, but nothing more than that.
Does it occur to anyone that people like me who own a jailbroken 3g have just got their hands on a 3gs and jailbroken that…
Now I have 2 jailbroken phones and presto – the stats double…
I wonder how they come up with this? How would they know who is jailbroken and who is not? Does apple know who jailbreaks their iphone?
Id say there will be slightly (alot!!!) more ppl than 10% unhappy with apple and some mobile carriers. Believe it or not but there are still a fair few amount of ppl that want to jailbreak but are unsure on how to do so or are scared to do it incase they stuff up the phone! There is no doubt that the number of ppl unhappy with their service and apple, is waaaaay higher than 10%…

me 2!!
If you guys develope apps, its a ***** to loose money, but there are ways in which to make your app “crack-proof”, but only if your app has to do with it being connected to a certain network, therefore games are still crackable but apps like text free unlimited i think its called, and beejive you cant crack.
Then there are people like me who have jailbroken thier phone because they want a better looking GUI! I wanted a wallpaper to be….
a wallpaper. I used winterboard to aply a theme and then I changed the icons in the theme to round icons that I liked better. Now I have the icons I want and whatever wallpaper I want behind my icons. Not to mention a five icon dock
and a blank screen (no icons on one page) to show off my wallpaper. Alot of them are digital
abstract pieces that I made myself. The only other app I got from cydia was gps phone for
some games. That is why I jailbroke my phone!
It all comes down to AT&T and apple not giving the customer your rightful option to unlock “YOUR PHONE”. Like every other provider. With this type of corporate mantality Apple is sure to loose out in the near future with newer products by others. I can’t wait!
I think the idea is good but you need to modify it a little.
Just a rumor but verizon is getting it’s own iPhone
