Hans Christian Ørsted Update
Earlier today I made a post about the new Google Doodle logo Google placed on their homepage and how it didn’t appear on the mobile version of Google. 
The logo was created to recognize the birthday of Hans Christian Ørsted. Judging by the comments a lot of people thought the new Google logo was a bomb, but it is not! The Google logo has wires passing electric current to make the compass work. Hans Christian Ørsted was a great physicist who discovered electromagnetism and was also the first to produce aluminum. He was’nt the very first to discover electromagnetism. Look it up on wikipedia, some italian guy did it before him, and did’nt get too much attention for it…
Yep. Wikipedia does it again. (be careful what you read there. It’s not always accurate!)
William Gilbert in 1600, a greek, coined the term electric (from the greek ELETRIK) with the discovery of the electron. Benjamin Franklin, linked lighting to electricity with his experiment in 1792 with the kite in a thunderstorm. In the early 1800′s, VOLTA, an italian and the one to whom you are referring I think, established the relationship between chemicals and electricity by inventing the battery, and in 1831, Michael Farady, an Englishman, constructed the first generator, therby putting to use the discoveries previously made. Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb in 1879, putting to use electricity in what we all would term, a terrific way!
So you see, there is a series of contributions to the discovery of “electricity” as we know it, but truly, the Greeks were the first to “discover” “ELECTRIK” city… by the discovery of the electron waaaaay back in the 1600′s. Hope this helps…..
