iPhone 3GS Jailbreak
Geohot (George Hotz), the first person to ever unlock the iPhone is at it again. He has released the iPhone 3GS jailbreak — before the Dev Team! The Dev Team originally planned on releasing the jailbreak after the iPhone 3.1 update but Geohot didn’t agree with this so he decided to release his own jailbreak today. Here is what Geohot posted on his blog about releasing his jailbreak early:
Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week.
The Dev Team did not want to release their jailbreak early because they felt that it would benefit relatively few people and thought it would be best to keep the vulnerability out of Apple’s eyes for now. Unlike all the current iPhone and iPod Touch devices, the iPhone 3GS cannot always be jailbroken. Apple can permanently patch this with a simple update. Now that Geohot has released this jailbreak, Apple may be able to examine it and permanently patch the exploit in their next iPhone 3.1 update.

Note: The purplera1n jailbreak software is in beta, and Winterboard does not work with it. As of right now you can only jailbreak using Windows (it won’t work with Windows 7). You may want to wait until the Dev Team at http://blog.iphone-dev.org releases their jailbreaking software.

I installed cydia and uploaded xgps and when it restarted it just goes dead? I tried to reboot but it just goes into the apple and then shuts off.
can anyone help….
you have to put it in dfu mode then restore it then re jailbreak it… try using redsnow 0.8
I agree this not a 18hole golf course, I’d say apple have 3.1 in pipeline, and a pipeline always have 2 holes …. Someone will always find 1
i did the jailbreak it has horrible problems my iphone wont boot up at all anymore im going to have to take it to the store tom. to get it reset do NOT download this

make it ra1n only works in XP (learned that th hard way).
other than that, went real smooth and super fast. cydia runs like a dream on this badboy. awesome program.

If I actually download winterboard with an application from cydia in your jailbroken 3gs. It wiLl go in safe mode. All you have todo is delete wInterboard and it will be fine
I also did the jailbreak on my iPhone 3GS and it worked fine. I had no problems with that. Only the winterboard don’t work. I hope they fix it fast. But the rest works without problems.

I’ve just used the purplerain unlock software and yes it is very easy to use. That said it is unstable. For example 1. iPhone loses and gains reception randomly 2. Changing from edge to 3g to normal is slow and unreliable often needing the sim removed and rebooted. 3 winterboard doesn’t work. 4 sbsettings togles don’t always work. 5 wifi comes and goes 6. Many cydia aps don’t run eg 5 icon dock. The 3gs is such an improvement! Can’t wait for fully working unlock. Keep up good work
I have vista and all it did was put me in the restore mode. in itunes i tried to restore it but i get a message error 13. to fix this just hold the power for 10s and then press the home at the same time for 5se release the home and keep holding the power like for 20s.

Kudos for the hack. However, this smells somewhat of a shameless self-plug by Geohot. I’m sure the release appeases the impatient crowd and grabs temporary recognition, but it’s far from stable and complete. Also, the glamorized self-portrait that even temporarily shows up on your iPhone when you run the purplera1n app is a fairly obvious narcissistic maneuver, and is actually kind of irksome.
I tried it, and while I think it’s great for ease, it is extremely unstable. I cannot install apps like SBSettings at all, and things seem to crash quite a bit. While I do realize this is beta, that seems like a really convenient umbrella to hide under for when things don’t work as most people expect them to. Dev-Team at least seems genuinely interested in finding longer term and more stable solutions to the problems jailbreakers face rather than appealing to the “we must have this now!” crowd… I’d rather wait and run my jailbroken phone with confidence rather than dealing with the frustration of a crashing/rebooting iPhone.
However, again, kudos for the hack. It is fairly cool.
I don’t see the point of releasing the jailbreak now, just for apple to close the holes within three weeks.
I agree with DevTeam, this should have waiting until 3.1 was released, since the next release would be a long while after that.
I hope the greed of one, doesn’t ruin it for all.
Cydia just pushed down a new copy of Winterboard.
Safe mode went byebye, hellooooo working Winterboard on the purplera1n-jailbroken 3G S.

I just installed using Vista 64bit and it worked fine.
Very easy to use.

If you are afraid to have problems with Apps from Cydia, just check on Google: there’s a lot of websites which have listed compatibility issues with 3gs and firmware 3.0…
I have a 3GS that I jailbroke with purplerain… I updated mobile substrate with the new version and winterboard works fine now!
I was reading some of the comments regarding the purplera1n hack. I recently purchased my first Iphone 3g(s) and I used the hack. I didn’t have any issue at first. I didn’t even know that winterboard wasn’t suppose to work after the hack because it did in my case. The only major problem I had was the battery life.
I need some help, how do I fix this problem?????
P.S.I prior to getting my 3gs I had the HTC DREAM (one of the best phones on the market minus the horrible battery life).
I’ve jailbraked my 3gs baseband 05.11.07 by first upgrading to the 3.1.2 firmware and then used blackra1n.
HOWEVER, i now find that my WiFi stopped working completely and there’s no reception whatsoever although the settings are enabled.
Any idea on how to regain my WiFi?

Try doing reset all settings, it worked in my case.
