iPhone 3GS Jailbreak

Geohot (George Hotz), the first person to ever unlock the iPhone is at it again. He has released the iPhone 3GS jailbreak — before the Dev Team! The Dev Team originally planned on releasing the jailbreak after the iPhone 3.1 update but Geohot didn’t agree with this so he decided to release his own jailbreak today. Here is what Geohot posted on his blog about releasing his jailbreak early:

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week.

The Dev Team did not want to release their jailbreak early because they felt that it would benefit relatively few people and thought it would be best to keep the vulnerability out of Apple’s eyes for now. Unlike all the current iPhone and iPod Touch devices, the iPhone 3GS cannot always be jailbroken. Apple can permanently patch this with a simple update. Now that Geohot has released this jailbreak, Apple may be able to examine it and permanently patch the exploit in their next iPhone 3.1 update.

Update: Go to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 3.0 with purplera1n for a step-by-step guide on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. Its easy!

Note: The purplera1n jailbreak software is in beta, and Winterboard does not work with it. As of right now you can only jailbreak using Windows (it won’t work with Windows 7). You may want to wait until the Dev Team at http://blog.iphone-dev.org releases their jailbreaking software.

As far as I remember, I thought the act of jailbreaking relied on only the hardware being breakable. Unless that is completely off base, I don’t see how apple could permanently patch out jailbreaking. Even if they find some way to stop the software from installing like it does now, there probably would appear some way to do it through iTunes. I’m not worried about it, because someone always finds a way to break it. You cannot feasibly patch every hole in the system, and it appears apple doesn’t horribly distain jailbreakers, just people unlocking the phones.

I totally Agree? The game has always been about thwarting their best efforts to keep the iPhone locked to AT&T! Not releasing the jailbreak was not a good idea because it empowers Apple.

    I’ll wait

So i guess I’ll consider purplera1n as my birthday present since today is my birthday! From download to it finish installing took at most 5 minutes. It seems flawless so far except that you cant use winterboard. This might be the best and one of the most easiest jailbreaks yet. Definitely recommend it.

So if apple releases a new update for the iPhone 3GS, they can make it impossible to jailbreak. I thought the Iphone 3GS had the same exploit as the iPod touch 2g, 24kpwn or something like that. If they have the same exploit why can the iPhone 3GS’s jailbreak be blocked off like that? If apple really cared about this, why did they make the iPhone 3GS with this exploit?

Apple recently announced over 1Million 3G S Iphones sold worldwide, so continued waiting doesn’t make much sense.

Every time I run it on my Vista machine it works, but when I hit “Make it Rain” it just crashes the program? (“Program is not Responding”).
I am running it on Compatibility mode too. What now?

After reading all the posts it looks like there is some small issues. I think I want to wait as it seems (if not is ) beta. Some one reported no wifi and some problems with ultrasnow. Im not a expert but im a little scared. Does any one kmnow if I do a restore that this method is unbrickable? Meaning can I always recover no matter if it messes stuff up or not? I would like 3.1 for the bluetooth voice control. Also does it unlock mms and stuff that att locked from us that the 3GS is capable of running?

I think it’s best to wait until 3.1 to release the jailbreak cuz people might want to have 3.1 jailbroken instead of 3.0 because 3.1 might be a better firmware with possibly better small features.

Is there any guarantee that OS 3.1 going to be the last version? If the answer is NO, then Geohot is probably right.

    Hi

I’ve just jailbroken my 3GS iphone. All was Ok to the Cydia first start. Each time i try to launch Cydia, i just have the time to see the load during 1 second, and after it return to the springboard.
I made a second jailbreak, expecting this could be better.
    Unfortunately not.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Regards

My fello jailbreakers, geohot”s method is unstable. Be very careful of what u download. The slightest discrepency could lead you to having to restore in dfu mode, since the release of makeitrain. I have been forced to restore at least 10 times.. Makeitrain is still In beta, so to help eachother during this beta process. Pls post any expierence you have that resulted in having to restore, so to help eachother to avoid the agony of restoring,, STAY AWAY FROM WINTERBOARD and ERRYTHING THAT NEEDS WINTERBOARD To FUNCTION.. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED… Happy jailbreaking…. Gee.digital$$$$$$
