Recently a discolored overheated iPhone 3GS was discovered and blogged about on blogs like Gizmodo, Engadget, and PCWorld. I’m not 100% sure, but I do think that the overheating problem is being caused by the iPhone OS 3.0 software update and it isn’t affecting the iPhone 3GS only, it’s affecting other iPhone and iPod Touch devices as well. After updating my iPod Touch to 3.0 I did notice that it got warmer whenever I plugged it in to charge it or played a game. I just did a quick search on Twitter, and it looks like I’m not the only one who has experienced this. I expect Apple to fix this in their next iPhone 3.0.1 or iPhone 3.1 update (which will hopefully be soon!). How has your iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade experience been so far? Do you have overheating problems because of iPhone OS 3.0? Leave a comment below.

Same here, I finally decided to upgrade my iphone (2G) from 1.1.4 firmware to 3.0 using RedSn0w and my phone gets really hot while charging, and I think when I have my carrier, or my wi-fi activated it also gets hot while on standby! I hope they can quickly address this issue so I can update my phone with RedSn0w! People posting these comments all have jailbroken iphones right?
I noticed on vacation that my phone was VERY hott… I thought that it might be a friek thing but I guess not. I just upgraded to 3.0 a few weeks ago… my phone is warming as I type… What a shame…
I lost my WI-Fi connection!!
Exactly I’m facing the problem of overheating ever since I upgraded my firmware to 3.0 and later 3.0.1. The New Firmware is causing serious trouble, overheating and battery starts to drain very quickly (Approx gives max 12 Hours standby time). I thought that 3.0.1 will also fix overheating problem other than sms venerability but same on Apple that they’re unable to do so.
IPHONE 2G 4 Gig, Firmware(3.0.1).
Mine gets really hot and will not hold a charge.
Had experienced the overheating iphone problem, my 3G phone was upgraded to 3.0 OS and about 2-3 weeks later my phone started heating up and discharging very quickly. I turned off wi-fi and bluetooth, push off and again it started heating up and within 2 hours was pretty darn hot and discharged. I took the phone back to the store and showed them. They took my phone and after a week they exchanged it for a new one with an OS of 2.2.1. The problem is very real…
I was instructed to update again to 3.0 and restore 2X which I just did. Also, removed all apps that requires internet connection for the meantime. hoep this works
I recently upgraded to 3.0 and jailbroke my 2G iPod Touch, and whenever iplug it in and am running games, or anything the back of the iPod right behind where the charge cable plugs in heats up to like 84º. And it never did that before 3.0.
for everyone here i think i might no the reason ! the majority of you have jailbroken your itouch or iphone, am i correct? im thinking that may be an issue ! im not saying stop jailbreaking! im just saying it might be a reason that we should look in to, you all may be correct though! cause i have a iphone 3g maybe a month and a half old. first thing i did was upgrade to 3.0 and i had no problems. i also have a itouch 2g but i did not upgrade.
Same issue, I noticed the extreme overheating when I plugged it to my itrip.. after a while maybe 30min, i felt the heat over the cover of the iPhone, I never experienced this heating before with 2.2.1, and just now is warm only with the charrging, apple launch the 3.0.1 official release, will fix the issue?
Have iPhone 3G with OS3.0
Experienceing the same overheating problems and my device is not jailbroken…
I too faced and continue to suffer with overheating and battery losing charge very rapidly. It started with 3.0 and next day updated to 3.01 and it got worst. Not sure what to do as it gets hot and can not hold charge.
My experience was much worse. The overheating problem, the charging problem, the battery decreasing problem, and the app running problem(slow down)
even i am facing this overheating problem.
now i am stuck on it.
whats the solution
I was facing with this whole battery and Heating up issue also. But I think I found the culprit: EDGE. Whenever I put my phone close to a speaker it goes crazy! That means my phone is trying to connect to the EDGE Network. I have my APN settings (Under Settings > general > Network > Celular Data Network) to none because I get charged HUGE bills with EDGE but it seems like it’s causing over heating & battery issues. Everyone Else who’s experiencing this give it a try. Whenever I put in the correct APN Settings my iphone stops the whole feedback and my battery goes back to normal & no overheating issues. But whenever I take them off It feels like I can fry an egg in my iPhone!
I second this:

The overheating problem is cosed by yahoo! messenger (in my case). after uninstall the app my phone came back to normal.
I have the same problem with an original iPhone with OS upgraded to 3.0. Overheating sometimes. Also, the screen auto-lock doesn’t always seem to be working, and that seems to be when the phone is overheating. And, yes, overall it is running really slow. And my email is also not working, although that may be an unrelated issue.
Anyone have a fix?
I was having this same problem as well as extremely short battery life. I then restored my phone and set it up as a new phone instead of a backup, re-synced and set up my settings, and it stopped. The battery life still isn’t quite what it used to be but it’s not nearly as bad as it was. I don’t really don’t know why this worked for me, but it did.
Aside from the battery, slow charge, and overheating issues, my iphone can’t store songs into it. On itunes however, it says that the phone has all the music in it but it’s definitely not there because the ipod within the iphone does not show any songs. Does anyone else have this problem?
same here,,,I had noticed these issues on my iPhone 3G also after updating to 3.0 and even my wi-fi started to get problems in detecting signal. I even tried updating it to OS 3.0.1 but still having the same problem, it get’s hot easily when charging, using wifi, bluetooth, bad wireless signal detection. I hope too that apple will investigate about this issues before releasing new batch of iPhones in the future.
