iPhone OS 3.0 causes overheating problems?

iPhone, iPhone OS 3 | Arasha | June 29, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Recently a discolored overheated iPhone 3GS was discovered and blogged about on blogs like Gizmodo, Engadget, and PCWorld. I’m not 100% sure, but I do think that the overheating problem is being caused by the iPhone OS 3.0 software update and it isn’t affecting the iPhone 3GS only, it’s affecting other iPhone and iPod Touch devices as well. After updating my iPod Touch to 3.0 I did notice that it got warmer whenever I plugged it in to charge it or played a game. I just did a quick search on Twitter, and it looks like I’m not the only one who has experienced this. I expect Apple to fix this in their next iPhone 3.0.1 or iPhone 3.1 update (which will hopefully be soon!). How has your iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade experience been so far? Do you have overheating problems because of iPhone OS 3.0? Leave a comment below.

Hey I’ve got the dame issue, I’ve got some advice though.
When you charge your phone put it on airplane mode it helps. After it’s fully charged turn it off the same night. Wait till you wake up and turn it back on and take it off airplane mode. You will notice after doing this it will get hot again some day then do the oposite and charge regular and wait till fully charged and turn off till next day.
Hope this worked for you like it did for me.
But 3.0 blows!! But landscape does come in handy.

        @why789,

I’m sorry, but you are just a freakin’ idiot. Of course software can cause overheating problems. Whether it’s a full blown problem or a few isolated incidents remain to be seen. It could be a matter of the operating system or some component of it calling the processor more than necessary, hence extra processor cycles and more heat. Or maybe the WiFi is broadcasting to often. Perhaps the piece of software that regulates the charging cycle is the culprit. There are numerous ways the software could cause heating issues since all of the iPhone’s hardware is driven by (guess what?) SOFTWARE! Very much like an operating system that has poorly configured power management settings can dramatically effect battery life on a laptop. I find it amazing that people like you who need a daily tutorial on which shoe belongs on which foot can come and spout a bunch of nonsensical rubbish all the while insulting people and then at the end of the day be entirely wrong! Software definitely CAN cause heating problems.

I cannot even know how a gentleman like you is asking this question, we live on 2009 you should already know basic stuff like this, off course the software may overheat the hardware, if a software has some fking bug that makes hardware be forced, it will overheat.

hahah. Your a genius kid..pure genius…now your gonna tell me metal doesn’t conduct heat!

don’t ever leave your iphone charging overnight that’s what causes problems. Because your iphone has a memory keeping charge data. if you charge it to long it won’t ever really go to 100%. it will just say 100% when it’s really lower the only I know to fix this is restoring the iphone. then my battery lasted longer.

Ok, people. I’m here to tell you once and for all, SOFTWARE CAN CAUSE OVERHEATING PROBLEMS! For thos of you who don t believe me, leave your phone on, and CHARGING all fricking night. The, when you wake up, hold your iPhone/iPod Touch in your hand. I got hot, didn’t it? I win, all you non believers lose. ^_^

This is a real problem, my 3G phone was upgraded to 3.0 OS and about two weeks later my phone started heating up and discharging very quickly. I recharged the phone, reset the phone, turned off wi-fi and bluetooth and again it started heating up and within 2 hours was pretty darn hot and discharged. I took the phone back to the store and showed them and they promptly exchanged it for a new one. The problem is real…

I don’t have any overheating problems, I use my living room plug through a extension cord when I charge it and it does get a little warm but it’s always done that back when I bought teh 3G iphone last year. 3.0 OS has been hella good to me.

  9. Jojo B says:

I got the same issue with my iphone 3G with 3.0 installed. It started heating up and battery drains very fast. I think it has something to do with the settings. I just disabled the ff. it seems ok now:

    1. Notifications: set to off
    2. Adjust the brightness to about 20%
    3. Auto-unlock set to 1 minute.
    4. Turned off my bluetooth

    Hope this helps.

  10. Cal says:

slightly warmer than before but not a big deal. as long it doesn’t effect the use of the phone I’m good.

  11. TOFFEE says:

Do you think that it is really about the update of 3.0 version? Because I have the same problem too. Ever since I updated my iPhone to its latest version, even if I just have it stand-by, the battery decreases rapidly. I wish that I should not have it updated if it really the case.
Is it also possible to bring back the older version of iPhone? (which is 2.0 i think. :))

  12. Nate says:

Yeah I just upgraded to 3.0 on my iPod touch and it is definately running WAY hotter than it did, especially while charging. Might go back to 2.x for a whille til this gets fixed

  13. Jeppee says:

guys, i have the same problem, regarding my iphone(2g) update the new 3.0 version, problem is battery drained so damn fast…. need help ASAP!!

  14. xXx says:

Guys this is not actually because of OS 3.0…its because of too much processing on 3.0 which makes it hot…For eg: the computer running on Win98 stays cool compared to a computer running XP/Vista..its because win98 has very less processing to do and has only 5-7 tasks running when your computer is idle…whereas winXP/vista have around 40-48 tasks running when the computer is idle…So basically it is because of OS 3.0

  15. Zebel says:

This is a REAL issue. I have a 2g iPhone, has been working fine. I upgraded it to OS 3.0 just a week ago. Right after upgrading, it started getting SO HOT and draining the battery so quick. Now I have to recharge it sometime 3 times a day! If I do not keep it plugged in charger, it’ll be dead tomorrow. I have no doubt it is caused by the OS 3.0. I’m wondering if Apple is going to address it!

Please keep us posted with any possible solution. Otherwise, I’ll be waiting for the next version of OS, hopefully fix it!

Does anybody know how to downgrade to OS 2.2 without loosing the information?

  16. Hunter says:

Ya I have an iPod touch 2g on 3.0 and when charging it gets almost too hot to touch. It seems to be coming from the lower left hand corner it’s quite bothersome.

  18. babycharm says:

im also having the same problem after i upgraded my iphone OS..
i hope apple would release a new OS to fix this problem..
it’s really hard to charge the iphone almost twice a day especially if you’re at work..

  19. willis says:

I have the iphone 3gs and have the same overheating problem but only when I leave it overnight, it’s because it goes over the 100% charge and needs to use the incomming energy thus overheating.

I am currently downloading the new 3.0.1 software which will helpfully fix this problem.

Also why are you only allowed 11 pages on the iphone 3gs I need at least 20, I filled it up with in a week.

  20. Oaks says:

Specally when I use 3g. I turned off 3g now and much slow network
    it must be fixed soon
