iPhone 3GS web browsing — faster than iPhone 3G,G1, and the Palm Pre

Mobile Analytics and advertising company Medialet recently did a benchmarking test to compare the web browsing speeds of the iPhone 3G S, iPhone 3G, T-Mobile Android G1, and the Palm Pre. All of these devices browsers’ use Webkit (an open source web browser) and Webkit has a Javascript test suite dubbed as SunSpider. It made sense for Medialets to run the Sunspider test suite to test the javascript speed of all these devices.

iPhone 3G S vs iPhone 3G vs G1:  The Results

iPhone 3GS running on iPhone OS 3.0 performed better than all the other devices (no surprise there)! A 2GHz Core 2 Duo WhiteMacbook running OS X 10.5.7 was tested as a baseline and it completed the test in 1.36 seconds. The iPhone 3G S completed the test suite in 16.5 seconds. The iPhone 3G on iPhone OS 3.0 was just as fast as the Palm Pre webOS browser, both completed the test in 48 seconds. The T-Mobile Android G1 completed the test in 91.1 seconds. The iPhone 3G running on iPhone OS 2.2.1 was the slowest and it completed the test in 132 seconds.  As you can see iPhone OS 3.0 made a huge difference on the iPhone 3G. If you’re an iPhone user and you haven’t updated already, then update now! You can see a graph of the test below.
