Reports of iPhone 3GS overheating problems have been spreading around the net. It all started at Nowhereelse where an iPhone 3GS owner posted a picture of a White iPhone 3GS 32GB which turned PINK on the back due to overheating.
The iPhone 3GS owner reported that he was using the iPhone 3GS’s GPS and 3G connection which caused the overheating and the discoloring. This story has spread on huge sites like Gizmodo, Engadget, and PCWorld. I’ve been reading through the comments on these sites and haven’t noticed anyone else claiming to have this problem. Do you have an iPhone 3GS? If you have any overheating problems please share them with us in the comments below!

I have an ipod touch 2nd gen… and i have to say i’ve been pretty fortunate since updating to 3.0 in the sense that everything has been working well… the only thing i have experienced as a problem is that i’ve notice my wifi connection doesn’t seem to hold as strong a signal at times where it used to have full signal… don’t know if anyone else has experienced this, but if anything hopefully it will be fixed in later updates… LOVING MY 3.0!!! :-P
I have the same problem as well, my wifi doesnt give me a strength signal as it used too and some of the applications are running a bit slow..kinda lagging. if the problem still persistence i will downgrade to 2.2.1
same…i have the same probalem. b4 updating to 3.0 i have a very strong wifi signal (not mine….its my neighbor’s lol) and now that i updated to 3.0, i dont get a lot of signal and sometimes i dont have any signal at all.
im just wondering how do u downgrade iphone 3G 3.0 to 2.2.1?
i really i wanna know cuz im thinking about just downgrading my phone
Well I jailbroke and unlocked my iPhone 2G and after I did that the next day I woke up the phone was dead and it was fully charged. I then charged it and it was extremely hot and then I unplugged it and then left it for 4 hours and then the phone went 10% left.
is your iphone 2g ok now?
yes its true i have noticed tht my ipod has been heating up ever since i updated. if a bunch of ipods break because of this apple better give us our money back or exchange them.
I have iphone 3g and i upgraded it to 3.0 and since then i see that it get over heated after using for a while and the battery life is a lot shorter also applications starting a bit late even when i press the home buttom to exit ,it takes alot more time than previous versions.
i have formated the phone like 5 times since i decided to upgrade to 3.0 and everytime i have the same result.
However , i am waiting for one more app to crash while i am using it , and if it happens again , i will downgrade to 2.2.1 again.
Also , i think there is something wrong with the ultraSn0w , the reason for saying that ,u will realyize it ,if u put the phone beside a radio and hear the static then install the Ultrasn0w the put it back beside the radio , then u will realyize how many static u will get.
Mines gone laggy…maybe that because of the jailbreak…
But it wasnt as laggy when it was jailbroken on 2.2.1
Yeah, I don’t think the 3.0 version update gives my phone no benefit at all. therefore it seems as if it just makes it worse
I got my iPhone 3GS on Thursday last week. I also had an iPhone 3G before and with the new one i notice the battery drains much quicker than with my 3G on OS 2.2.1!
Further i also realized that when configuring email-settings the phone seems to “think” very very long when editing for example the email-address or email-server (actually it doesn’t matter which field you edit). After some time the phone returns to normal working speed again.
Also, the new compass function actually works quite fine but whenever i open up GoogleMaps out of the compass program (little icon at the bottom left) i the map acutally doesn’t rotate at all when flipping the iphone to left or right. Isn’t it supposed to do so or am I missing something?
My has already damaged a WIFI function, when iPhone 3g hot makes wifi not working sometime say that “geen verbinding mogelijk met net werk/Unable to join the network’
Ha ha.
my ipod touch 1st gen is a lot more stable and fast after upgrading to 3.0…(its jailbroken ofcourse)… :D…love 3.0!
Sid. 3.0 of the ipod touch 1G is useless :| you would have been better sticking with 2.1 jailbroken because most cydia/installer(not in 3.0)/icy apps work perfectly on 2.1 and not as much on 3.0
to begin with, the iphone’s battery life is not enough for the endless apps out there. second, for all the jailbroken ones, you gotta respring once in a while to close all the apps and not let them run in the background, or use memory, which prolly why your battery drains faster. For the non-jailbirds, power off and on. Clicking/pressing the home button doesn’t necessarily close the apps.
I think the battery capacity is a little over 1000mah (1200mah?). I have the Mophie Juicepack and it carries, I believe, more or less 2500mah (too lazy to get it from my gym bag to confirm). I could charge my iPhone 3G one and a half times (from 10% battery left; can’t charge it with Mophie when it’s completely dead).
the maps app drains my battery like crazy, esp on 3G network.
There was this one time I left my phone 3G inside the car, and it stated on the screen that it was too hot to function. It WAS hot to the touch, being ceramic or whatever the heck the backing is made out of. I got the white 16G.
I didn’t see any discoloration whatsoever; I had to point the car’s ac on my phone to cool it down and when it reached a certain temperature (enough to function properly), I encountered no problems.
Maybe the 3GS’s shell is cheaper, or whoever the person was, prolly was wearing red pants or shirt and rubbed it off or something. I dunno. I’m speculating here as to why it turned pink.
And yes, 3.0 OS still has some compatibility issues with some apps, both hacked & not. Navizon doesn’t work; just crashes. Intelliscreen has to be v2.93 or it makes the screen go nuts by flipping “pages” back n forth.
I have an iphone 3g and had installed 3.0 Beta 5, since then the iphone gets a little bit warm with estimate stand by time up to 12 hours, then run safari browser opened 10 pages (backgrounding) the iphone gets overheating with est stand by time holds only for 3 hours. Downgrade to 2.2.1 no running background app the iphone stand by time is 2 days 22 hours.
I just phoned o2 in the UK, and they said I have to return it to the o2 shop and they will replace it, but he also said try backing up and then restoring to your back-up, “that seemed to solve a few of our customers problems.” Yes that’s a quote! So try that, but if your in your 28 day limit for replacement then I would just take it back to the store, mines is marked up on the back and a scratch on the screen so if I get overheating problems again I’m returning it to the o2 shop on Argyle street (Glasgow)
PS: Seems o2 are aware of the problem?
Do you think it might be apples way of punishing you for the jailbreak
I upgraded to the 32G 3GS and notice it is warm but not really overheating. I guess I just expected that a bigger/faster processor would equal a little heat. I have noticed some wifi weirdness tho. That is my only complaint but it is minor.
ive got the ipod touch 2nd gen and even with that ive noticed my battery life depleats very quickly. overheating… not so much, but if apple offers a refund for overheating ima do everything i can to make it overheat (coz the new ipod touch is coming out and coz im probly gonna buy an iphone but runnin outta money) xD cyas
I have had an apple 3gs for a bit over a week now, and have been loving it. Tonight, I put it in my Belkin FM transmitter thing – was obviously driving – and it told me that this was not compatible, which had happened before but it seemed to work well as a charger. At any rate, this time it turned the phone off, like properly off – won’t come back on sort of off – and heated the whole thing up noticably. I can see the phone is cooked – plugged it into the computer and nothing. Pulled the sim card out – by this time it was heating up again – and nothing.
Time to visit apple.
I have had my iphone 3gs for a few weeks now and for some reason it worked very early in the AM, but now it wont come back on at all. Last time I check it had battery life… I connected the iphone to my computer (Windows 7) and it trys to install the drivers but fails (it worked before ever since I got the iphone), still nothing shows up on the iphone. I am hoping that it just needs to be chargde, but I have yet to find out. Anyone having the same issue?
FYI, I have seemed to resolve my issue by pressing the power button and home button together for a few seconds. Before I was trying to press the power button, hold the power button and the same with the home button, but not both.
All the best!
I have an iPod touch 2g that’s overhears when playing games or just browsing the web for just a couple minutes. Ever since I upgraded to the 3.0 software
