*Unofficial* Jailbreak Firmware 2.2.1 (Windows)

Written By Hans Berger on Thursday, January 29, 2009 | 7:19 AM

Firmware 2.2.1 Jailbreak

NOTE: This is an unofficial release

I just jailbroke my iPod Touch 1st Generation with the firmware 2.2.1 update thanks to Vortex, a Russian hacker for creating the bundles  for the firmware 2.2.1 update.  You can jailbreak firmware 2.2.1 for your iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 1st Generation now.   A lot of people are anxiously awaiting this jailbreak but you must realize that it's beta and it won't be worth it jailbreaking yet.  iPhone 3G users, do not update to firmware 2.2.1 if you want to keep your unlock because firmware 2.2.1 will update your baseband permanently.  You will need to download custom firmware with an earlier baseband in order to use jailbreak.

You need to have the .net framework in order for it to work. Here’s the link:

QuickPWN
January 29, 2009 at 9:15 AM

You can't use yellowsn0w if you upgrade to firmware 2.2.1 because your baseband will permanently be updated and yellowsn0w only supports baseband of 02.28. So if you want yellowsn0w don't upgrade right now and wait for iPhone Dev Team to figure out a solution.

In this post it says "You can jailbreak firmware 2.2.1 for your iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 1st Generation with this QuickPWN 2.2.1 software. "
so that means we can jailbreak iphone 3g 2.2.1 right...but then it says....
"iPhone 3G users, do not update to firmware 2.2.1 if you want to keep your unlock "

so does this mean we can jailbreak it but we will loose our unlock if we updated to 2.2.1?

thanks!

Did everything I'm supposed to do, and got error message in QuickPwn "Firmware error string" Pretty positive it's a 1st gen iPod. Version "iPod1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw" installed fine.

iPod serial # 9C8029 (beginning)
Model # MA627LL

Can someone verify this is 1st gen?

I've tried everything, been getting this message all day with even downgrading.

Arg, I need some help with the jailbreaking my ipod with 2.2.1, I have the latest version of QuickPWN and I think I do i'm doing it right. I always get to the part where it tells me to hold the home button and all that, then when I get to one second left of holding only the home for 30 seconds a message pops up saying something along the lines of Your ipod was not connected properly or you did not follow the instrucsions correctly ( But I did both of them) . I have one other question. Do I need a speacial Firmware or whatever that I have to browse for when it tells me to or can I just use the one the that shows up automaticaly?
Thanks so much, Eliwh

You're supposed to update your iPhone to firmware to 2.2.1 in iTunes and then jailbreak.

QuickPWN
January 29, 2009 at 3:15 PM

You can do this with AptBackup from Cydia.

1. Go to Cydia and install AptBackup
2. Launch AptBackUp and hit the backup button
3. Sync your device (do not resync again or your backup will be gone and you'll need to do step 2 again)
4. Restore your device and jailbreak again
5. Launch Cydia and reinstall AptBackup and hit the restore button
6. Run the app and hit restore. All your applications will be downloaded and your device will reboot.

I'm new to jailbreaking and currently run mac osx 10.5.6 and have heard bad things about trying it out on there. Would it be better to jailbreak my iphone 3g on a windows machine? Is there any drawbacks to this if I currently sync my phone with itunes on my mac? Thanks

For those of you having trouble getting passed the apple icon on your iPhone when running quickpwn I might have found a way to complete the bootup with the jailbreak. With the iPhone connected to my pc and the boot running, I loaded iTunes (which of course was frozen) and the started up quickpwn again. That seemed to have pushed it through and iTunes loaded up with the sync screen. Then the iPhone was jailbroken and running fine. Not sure if this was the solution but it worked for me, give it a try if you want.

hey Chris

Check that itunes isn't set to auto sync, as it will want to replace the contents, but it should give you a warning that if you sync your iphone with a new /different library, it'll wipe all your existing tunes.

Check out swaptunes via cydia, it installs a second iTunes_Control folder and switches between each from the springboard.

Hope this helps.

I bought an Iphone 3G with the baseband 2.30.03. I want to use it with the 02 Sim. How would I go about that? I tried everything downgrading to 2.2 Firmware, using QuickPWn... Nothing helps. I put my card inside but I can't seem to get any network.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you

I have a Aluminum Macbook with 10.5.6 running and was wondering if I would be better off to Jailbreak on a Windows machine even though I normally sync my iphone with itunes on my MacBook? Anyone done this before or recommend this or have another idea?

Dont jailbreak on a mac its difficult because of the mac os 10.5.6 you cant get in DFU mode.. so better jailbreak on a PC

I had the same issue, but I decided to plug it in to a USB 2.0 port and had no hiccups. Just make sure you have the .net framework installed.

Since this is unofficial would there be a downside to using it instead of waiting for an official jailbreak?

January 30, 2009 at 1:55 AM

I have done the Jailbreak operation three times using my MacBook Pro and Quickpwn for MacOsX without any kind of problems.
I have also jailbroken other phone for friends. So it can be done in any platform without any kind of sync.

Alberto,

Does the Unofficial Jailbreak Firmware 2.2.1 include older 2.28 baseband?

Mark

I tried to upgrade my iPhone 3g from 2.2 to 2.2.1 as per the instructions. It went through the usual QuickPWN installation process, chose the 2.2.1 firmware downloaded from here, and the QuickPWN reported everything upgraded correctly. But when I check the firmware on the iPhone, it still says 2.2 (5G77) as if nothing happened. Itune reports the same. I repeated the process again with another downloaded version of the 2.2.1 firmware, but the same thing happened.

Anyone have success upgrading to 2.2.1 with an iPhone 3G and this quickPWN pre-release?

January 30, 2009 at 2:55 AM

this is for people stuck on 2.2.1........
if your wanting to downgrade you must first download the original 2.2

plug iphone into computer and restore to 2.2 (not custom: this will not work and error comes up) to do this you must press alt with mac then restore and choose 2.2 file, for pc im sure its shift and click
restore and same applys, use apples 2.2

once done, download quckpwn 2.2 or pwnage tool 2.0.3, i recomend pwnage as quickpwn didnt unlock the iphone, reason im not sure.

there you go........ now you can wait for big fix's on jailbreak 2.2.1

yes this works for 3g too

if your computer dosnt reconise your iphone/ipod manually put into dfu mode

(turn off phone - hold home and power on)

So I quickpwned 2.2.1 yesterday, and today my phone relocked! I DFU restored to 2.2 and quickpwned again. Everything is fine now, but I wonder if there isn't an extra check in 2.2.1....

January 30, 2009 at 4:14 AM

Hi chris, in my opinion it is better to do it with the windows because in case something goes wrong, you should not worried about your iphone data.
I also have macbook air with MAC OS and Windows Vista, and I always use Vista for updating and after I finished my work with iphone i reconnected to my macbook air.
Cheers and thanks to QuickPWN!

I have a problem when i download the quickpwn2.2.1 an trying to jailbreak my Ipod I get this

Quickpwn.exe - Application error

the application Failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135. Click on okay to terminate the application

what should i do?

January 30, 2009 at 7:56 AM

You need to download a 2.2 firmware and restore your iphone from 2.2 them download 2.2.1 firmware and mod it with Quickpwn and then load 2.2.1 onto the iphone

Bishup
January 30, 2009 at 9:19 AM

I recently had my Iphone crash and had reset the factory settings. in turn the restore function installed 2.2.1. Is there anyway to restore an older version of the baseband, it states that it is permanent above. I found a prior backup on another computer, though my assumption is that it never changes the baseband.

will the next version of QuickPWN address a work around for the new baseband, or later versions address this so that the iPhone will be able to jailBroken again...?
